Shane Doan announced his retirement from hockey earlier this week and if there’s one thing the longtime Arizona Coyotes captain wants people to remember about him it’s how much he loves the game.
The 40-year-old can now look forward to watching NHL action from a fan’s perspective. During a Friday appearance on Tim and Sid with guest hosts Jackie Redmond and Faizal Khamisa, Doan was asked if there were any players in particular he’s looking forward to watching and he singled out a pair: Auston Matthews and a “fun to watch” Patrik Laine.
Doan mentioned that he is involved in minor hockey programs in Arizona, the same programs Matthews, a Scottsdale, Ariz., native, grew up playing in. In fact, the Toronto Maple Leafs star grew up cheering for the Doan’s Coyotes.
Matthews and Laine were the first- and second-overall picks from the 2016 NHL Draft and finished one-two, respectively, in Calder Memorial Trophy voting this past season.
