Flight delays: Manchester Airport is the worst for flight delays over Christmas

Manchester Airport has been named as the airport in the UK where you’re most likely to experience delays, according to research by Kayak.co.uk.

The study claims the northern English airport was the worst performing in terms of punctuality.

Passengers at Manchester are five times more likely to be delayed compared to the best performing airport, in Kayak.co.uk's data.

But according to Manchester Airport, its own internal data reveals delays are far less.

Spokesperson Richard Wheeldon said: "Our own verified internal data shows that, for the periods highlighted by Kayak.co.uk, the actual proportion of flights at Manchester that arrived or departed 30mins late or more was 11 per cent for both arrivals and departures, not 14 and 20 per cent as Kayak.co.uk suggests."

Leeds Bradford Airport was voted the best - with the least amount of flight delays in the UK.

But back at the other end of the scale, second worst performing in the UK was Gatwick Airport - where 17 per cent of departing flights and 14 per cent of inbound flights were delayed.

Average delays experienced at the East Sussex site were 72 minutes long.

Glasgow had the same average delay time, coming off third worst.

London Stansted fared slightly better, followed by Edinburgh and then London Heathrow.

Winning Leeds Bradford had just four per cent of its flights delayed.

It was followed by Newcastle Airport with six per cent.

Liverpool, Aberdeen, London Luton and London City came in next.

The other two in the middle range were Bristol and Birmingham.

If you’re travelling international, you’re most likely to be delayed in Dubai and Delhi.

But if you’re travelling to Sydney, Kuala Lumpur or Amsterdam, your chances of a smooth journey are high.

KAYAK travel expert Suzanne Perry saids: “The festive season is an exciting and busy time of year, but it can be stressful too. For airports that have higher chances of delays, it pays for Brits to plan ahead, check flight times and book their tickets accordingly.”

Thousands of passengers affected by delays this Christmas could be eligible for flight delay compensation.
