compLexity: Are two veterans, two newcomers and a TI6 vice champion enough to win a Major?

We don’t know how the Boston Major main event journey will turn out for compLexity Gaming but after watching their games from the group stage one thing is sure: Melonzz and his teammates are ready to fight.  From history to math, we present the non-boring compLexity class.

Introduction

One of the most long-standing and respected eSports organizations in North America, compLexity Gaming was founded in 2003. Since then, they have been a consistent and driving force in multiple competitive gaming scenes, competing in six of the most popular games nowadays. With over 120 major championships and a fully-equipped gaming house especially decorated for their players, coL is known as one of best eSports organizations.

In 2012, "FIRE” was picked up by compLexity together with some lesser known North American players. Two years later, compLexity`s Dota 2 team announced that five former Heroes of Newerth players would gather up to defend the Ancient. Kyle 'Melonzz' Freedman, Linus 'Limmp' Blomdin, Zakari 'ZfreeK' Freedman, Andrew 'Riser_' Bronze, and David 'MoonMeander' Tan were the ones to believed in a dream team and the first to try to make  a name for themselves with coL in the world of Dota 2.

When the The International 5 hype was running through every player's veins, Limmp and Riser_ had to be dropped from the roster in order for coL to have a real shot at the biggest event of the year. Tal 'Fly' Aizik and Luiz 'Zyzz' Perez took their places and together dominated the American qualifiers, only losing one out of 13 games they played. Unfortunately, their winning streak was stopped by Evil Geniuses who sent them to the lower bracket, where Virtus Pro smashed their dreams and sent them home with a 9-12th place finish.

Shortly after the failure at TI5, Fly and MoonMeander left the team to form Monkey Business (OG) with Johan 'NOtail-BigDaddy' Sundstein. A few missed qualifiers later, coL welcomed back Limp together with Simon 'Handsken' Haag and Rasmus 'Chessie' Blomdin. Even though Alan ‘Nahaz’ Bester and James Leath from IMG Academy came to help them out, compLexity failed to make it out of The International 6 Wildcards.

compLexity after the 2016 Fall Shuffle

September, 17 was the day when Antonio 'canceL^^' Mihai, Justin 'JK' Rosselle and David 'Moo' Hull were officially announced as part of the family, while Limmp, Chessie, and Handsken left, disappointed by their latest performances.

It was a big surprise when two newcomers were brought to a veteran team. Many questioned both canceL^^ and Jk`s stress resistance and their lack of experience on the professional scene. But ZfreeK and Melonzz put their trust in them despite all the malicious comments. Moo's addition to the team was a real shock. Placing second at The International 6, Moo seemed to get along perfectly with his underdog team so Rasmus 'MiSeRy' Filipsen's tweet about losing their offlaner came out as a big surprise for their fans. As was expected, the NA player was contacted by many other teams but compLexity were the ones that won his heart.

Two months after the Fall Shuffle, Jk broke down because of stress during game two against NP at the American Qualifiers Finals for ESL One Genting 2017. Jaron 'monkeys-forever' Clinton, coL's substitute player, took his place for the Boston Major.

What heroes compLexity like?

In the last three months, Melonzz drafted Mirana for canceL^^ eight times out of 38 games, followed by Templar Assassin with five picks. It's a bit strange that Invoker, canceL's  signature hero, was only picked twice and Tinker, with whom canceL^^ played over 500 (pub) games was drafted only four times ahead of the Boston Major.

Until Jk's departure, Moo had the chance to play Batrider seven times despite his low win-rate (28%). On the opposite pole, we can see a high win rate for Axe who assured the win in four games out of six. Unfortunately, the drafter hasn't picked Moo's signature hero Beastmaster so far, which he plays like a god with a 73% overall win rate in pro games.

After Moo's transition to the carry position, coL`s offlaner monkey-forever seems to prefer Storm Spirit and Batrider. On these heroes, he has had his most competitive games so far. As for the supports, the captain and his brother are usually playing Kunkka and Io with a 50% and 44% win-rate respectively. Another regular pick is Warlock, which has a high win rate in both competitive and pub games.

Reasons to cheer for compLexity

  • CanceL^^`s talent. Although new to the pro scene, canceL has already showed his impressive skills, dominating the mid lane against some of the finest players.
  • The Supports. Ready to sacrifice everything for their core's sake, Melonzz and his brother, ZfreeK prove to their opponents that the thousands of hours played together are very important for the team.
  • Moo. Vice captain at TI 6, he sets higher expectations for the team. Everyone wants to see him again fighting at a Valve event grand finals.
  • coL’s synergy. We all know how important it is for a team success that their players to get along well outside the game. Watching compLexity’s recent games and talking a bit with some of the members I can say that the synergy is one of their biggest strengths.
