A secret to success in my classroom (and my personal peace) is an excellent substitute teacher manual. Before I used this, I would come back to a messy classroom, students didn't have work done, and it was just awful. Now, I come back and they have done so much work and behavior isn't a problem.
I'm a partner with my guest teachers. They know I treat them as professionals and I have people who want to be a substitute for me.
It is also a good idea for the safety of your students.
Whether you call them substitute teachers, guest teachers or relief teachers - these professionals are professionals. Leave them an excellent binder of information customized to your classroom to help your students (and the teacher) succeed.
