LOUISVILLE, Ky. — History was made Wednesday evening at Knights Hall as the Bellarmine University wrestling team hosted its first-ever meet.
The Knights were forced to dig out of a 12-0 hole in a dual meet against Thomas (Ky.) More due to a pair of forfeits and nearly rallied for the victory, but the Saints recorded a key pin in the heavyweight match to seal a 27-19 win.
Sophomores
Cole Tawney and
Andy Dobben and juniors
Mitch Rusch and
Brian Carman notched wins for Bellarmine, which was competing in its fifth competition overall.
After Bellarmine forfeited at 125 and 133, Tawney got the Knights' comeback going at 141 by pinning Damien Walton. Two matches later, Dobben pinned Malachi Marlow at 157 to cut Bellarmine's deficit to 15-12.
Rusch followed with a 7-6 decision over Jacob Bria at 165 to knot the score at 15. Thomas More regained control by winning a pair of close matches at 174 and 184 to build a 21-15 advantage.
Carman, at 197, earned a major decision with a 16-5 romp over Avery Jones to push the Knights within 21-19 with one match left. In the finale, Bellarmine junior heavyweight
Bryan Carter nearly delivered a quick pin over Ahmad Hameidan, but Hameidan managed to escape defeat and pin Carter to secure the win for the Saints.
