The World's 50 Best Bars, Rimowa's 80th Anniversary and More

This article is more than 6 years old.

The World's 50 Best Bars for 2017

American Bar at London’s Savoy Hotel took top honors last week at the World’s 50 Best Bars 2017. Last year’s runner-up, the American Bar (above) dethroned New York City’s The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog. But geographically speaking, the United States still dominated the awards—once again. Thirteen of the winners hail from America, compared to eight in the U.K. Rounding out the top three locations was Singapore, which had six winners.

New York is home to seven of the 13 U.S. bars, including The NoMad, above, which was named the top bar in North America. Employees Only (No. 37), Attaboy (No. 8), Mace (No. 42), Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog (No. 5), Dante (No. 16), and BlackTail (No. 32) were the other top entries.

After New York, San Francisco came in with three much-beloved watering holes: Trick Dog (No. 26), ABV (No. 46), and Tommy’s (No. 48). Miami and Chicago’s three entries were mainstays—Sweet Liberty (No. 27), Broken Shaker (No. 18), and Aviary (No. 41).

Atlas

Asia had a particular strong showing at the World’s 50 Best this year: Singapore’s opulent new bar, Atlas, above, is ranked at No. 15 and the winner of the “Highest New Entry” award. And Taiwan’s Indulge Experimental Bistro (No. 28) is one of four additional bars in the continent.

Hinckley Launches the World's First Fully Electric Luxury Yacht

Think of it as a Tesla for the water.

Hinckley, the iconic New England boatmaker for nearly 90 years, recently debuted the first fully electric yacht. The 28.5-foot Dasher—which takes its name from Hinckley’s original Picnic Boat hull—is powered by twin 80-hp electric motors and dual BMW i3 lithium ion batteries.

The elegant, sporty carbon-epoxy composite hull was designed by Michael Peters, with hand-painted, lightweight composite Artisanal Teak and is in keeping with the classic Hinckley look. And the yacht—Hinckley’s lightest ever—is filled with cutting-edge technology: It features titanium hardware and console details produced by a 3D printer.

The Dasher’s cruising speed is 10mph (with a range of 40 miles), but she can reach 18-27mph (with a range of about 20-25 miles). Above all, the silent driving experience comes with zero emissions—and no gas tank as a backup. (The boat is equipped with dual 50-amp charging cables capable of reaching a full charge in four hours.) The estimated price for the Dasher is more than $500,000, and Hinckley is now accepting orders for delivery in Summer 2018.

Travel Wise

Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is now a necessity when you travel and well worth the subscription price. Not only does a VPN keep your web browsing secure over public WiFi networks, but it can also help you get past regional restrictions for video and streaming services as well as Facebook and Twitter. One of the other smart reasons to use a VPN service (such as TunnelBear or NordVPN) is that by masking your location—say to the UK or Hong Kong—you can often find cheaper airfares by appearing as though you’re buying tickets from a different country.

Rimowa Celebrates Its 80th Anniversary with Celebrity Suitcases

Rimowa

Aluminum may be the traditional 10th anniversary gift, but to celebrate the 80thanniversary of Rimowa, the German luggage company famed for its aluminum cases, asked celebrities to share their personal suitcases. Among the grooved luggage that Rimowa gathered were trolleys from Martha Stewart, above, and designer Virgil Abloh. Karl Lagerfeld even photographed his suitcase, below.

Rimowa also asked each of the celebrities to share how travel has shaped them: “Planning is paramount when it comes to travel,” said Stewart. While director David Fincher offered a more visionary approach: “Even though I wear glasses, travel stops me from being short-sighted.”
