It's a four-way race for Essex County sheriff, with a Democrat and a Republican, as well as two independent candidates, jockeying for a six-year term in the job.
The winner replaces Frank Cousins Jr., a Republican declined to run for another term after serving for 20 years. There are 34 cities and towns in Essex County, located in the northeastern part of Massachusetts.
According to its website, the sheriff's department "houses sentenced county inmates, pre-trial county inmates and sentenced state inmates," as well as a "handful of federal inmates."
The rehabilitation of prisoners, reducing recidivism and who is the most qualified for the job are among the topics that have surfaced in the campaign.
Kevin Coppinger of Lynn is the Democratic nominee, while Anne Manning-Martin of Peabody is the Republican in the race. The two independents are Mark E. Archer of Bedford, and Kevin J. Leach of Manchester-By-The-Sea.
Coppinger is the chief of the Lynn Police and Manning-Martin is deputy superintendent with the Department of Correction and a councilor at-large in the city of Peabody.
Archer is a retired state trooper and Leach is a former county commissioner.
