Abstract: Circular RNAs(circRNAs) is a novel type of endogenous non-coding RNA that, differnet from linear RNAs,form a covalently closed continuous loop and highly represented in the eukaryotic transcriptome. These circRNAs mainly arise from exons or introns, and are differentially generated by back splicing or lariat introns.Recent studies have discovered circRNAs enormously abundant, evolutionally conserved and relatively stable in cytoplasm. These features confer numerous potential functions to circRNAs,such as acting as microRNA(miRNA) sponges, binding to RNA-associated proteins to form RNA-protein complexes and then regulating gene transcription.Emerging evidence indicates that circRNAs might play important roles in digestive system neoplasms and serve as diagnostic or predictive biomarkers of some diseases. In this paper, the authors summarized the up-to-date research progress on circRNAs in digestive system neoplasms in China and overseas to provide new insights into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of digestive system neoplasms in clinics.
