Two years ago today, as part of their Q2 Fiscal 2016 results BlackBerry CEO John Chen officially announced plans to launch the company's first Android-powered BlackBerry smartphone known formally as Priv by BlackBerry.
At the time, John Chen noted:
Today, I am confirming our plans to launch Priv, an Android device named after BlackBerry's heritage and core mission of protecting our customers' privacy. Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform.
Since then, BlackBerry went on to release the DTEK50 and DTEK60 as part of laying the groundwork for hardware licensing with TCL, and ultimately BB Merah Putih, and Optiemus which led to the release of the BlackBerry KEYone, BlackBerry Aurora and marked BlackBerry's formal exit from hardware and transformation into a software-focused company.
