1 1/2 stars This does not read in digital format. Over half the worded bubbles were messed up, pix-elated, whatever. Gave me a headache. I did look over the first several pages at the art. That was nicely done and very colorful. You get can get part of the story just from the images. I would be willing to look at this in an original, print comic style to give another chance but since my only experience and access is with a digital version it was very disappointing.

'Ghoul Scouts: Night of the Unliving Undead' by Steve Bryant with art by Mark Stegbauer and Jason Millet is a group of scouts that track down the paranormal. This time around it's zombies, and the Ghoul Scouts didn't exactly go looking.
Outside the town of Full Moon Hollow, Paranormal Capital of the World, a couple groups of scouts are camping. When zombies suddenly show up, the boys fight them off and wonder where everyone else has gone. They run into a couple of girls in their own scout group and decide to team up to find out what is happening. One thing they notice is that all the zombies are heading East. They decide to head the other way and find out what is going on in town. Armed with a frying pan, a slingshot, a potato gun, a baseball bat and a stick, they are able to fight their way to town. What is causing this and where is everyone?
A zombie story for kids seems a bit weird, but it works. Each included issue has a glance at the creative process that goes into creating a comic. I found these to be pretty great. The creators hint at other things to come in this ongoing series. The characters are likeable enough, but I found the action to feel repetitive with each of the 5 kids getting to hit a zombie with their weapon of choice. It repeated enough over the 5 issues that it wore on me a bit. It's good for what it is, and young readers should like it well enough if they are in to monsters.

A strong 3 stars, but this young comic certainly has flaws. The guys are very interchangeable, for a start, and even the two female characters could have more oomph about them. A lot here could do with more oomph, in fact, including the action scenes – yes, they are limited by how much you can show and how repetitive they might be, but more could be put in to them in the way of convincing detail and conviction. My open letter to the creators would be – why can't anybody see the lurid green glow of the zombies until it's too late; why bring up the TV series aspect only to do nothing with it; and what was with that rushed ending? Still, a lot of comics for this age range have been a lot worse, so I wouldn't mind seeing more in the future, if things get developed in the meantime.

Well, Ghoul Scouts was good, but forgettable. I read it less than a week ago and I remember very little about it. I know that I enjoyed the art, and that it was super action-packed. Therefore, I think kids will enjoy it more than I did - especially if they like a little bit of paranormal as well. It's a good choice for children who are looking for something "scary," especially if they are reluctant readers.

Something stranger than usual haunts Full Moon Hollow, Paranormal Capital of the World. Adults either can t see it, can t remember it, or go crazy from it. So when a zombie outbreak threatens the town, only a group of misfit scouts can save it!
Ghoul Scouts: Night of the Unliving Undead is a well drawn and colored graphic novel that combines the classic zombie survival adventure with coming of age and leads into a larger supernatural story that I hope to see more of in the future. The teenagers that have to defend themselves, and save the town, are a nice blend of personalities. All of the teens, both girls and boys, are smart and capable while still having plenty of vulnerabilities and insecurities. I like that there were some emotionally charged moments in the story, right along side the fight for survival and mystery solving to stop the crisis. The elements of the story balanced nicely, with nothing feeling like it was tossed in there to appease editors or publishers. More importantly, the story left me wanting more while still offering enough of a conclusion that it left me satisfied.

I am seriously questioning the higher reviews of this book. I suspect they were "paid" for in one form or another...there is a 4 star review here that starts off, "I don't remember what happened..." Really?
I paid for my copy as part of a pack on Kickstarter - and this is definitely a premise I can get into. However, the art is very stiff - you can see consecutive panels where the characters are standing almost exactly the same, in the same order, same distance, with eye changes only, etc....a la a Scooby Doo cartoon (limited animation). I like Scooby Doo though, because it's funny - this is just...leaden. Dialogue fails to inform and the conversations are stilted. Transitions are graceless. Some of the dialogue seems better suited to the Zombies than the Ghoul Scouts.
My question to 5 star reviews who received copies gratis is, would you really give this 5 stars if you paid cover price?

Read this last year and forgot to review it. I can't remember a lot about it but that it features some scouts who were out in the woods when they run into zombies and find out they were everywhere and they had to figure out how to stop them. It was super fun an a real cute comic for kids.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review!
So it is not Halloween any more, but when I spotted this one over at Netgalley I just had to try it out. Scouts + zombies + mystery? Um, yes, where do I sign up for this!
This one is apparently a bundling of 4 volumes. Each part has a separate cover, a bit of information about the series, and also some sketches for the characters and how the characters got to be were they are now.
After reading it, well, I have to say I am filled with many many questions. However, I do have to say, that I don't mind them that much. The story builds up, you start with mystery, scouts, and then zombies. Then some more zombies, you find out some stuff as we get along. However, I do feel that the ending was a bit rushed. So, they suddenly find our mysterious guy, then boom, then people get called and done. I feel like this part could have done with a bit more spreading out. Now it felt disjointed and weird.
The whole scout stuff was really fun, it gave the kids some advantage as they knew how to work the land, and also how to work with tools. Plus it was a bit funny to see how the guys had to be saved by 2 girls. :P Sorry, just think it is always funny. Guys are always acting tough, but then they do something stupid and end up having to be saved. :P
I don't really get how anyone would want to live at this place. Sorry, but apparently people have been going missing for quite some time, yet people just continue living there? Whut? I would move as fast as I could if this was the case.
I also wonder how the zombies work, apparently a bite is not deadly? So what do you have to do to turn into a zombie? Magic? Something else?
I will definitely check out the next volume, hopefully more information is given in that one.

Review of Issues 1-4
I enjoy a story about Scouts - especially when it's up to them to save the day, thanks to their knowledge gained through badge work! (I realise that this creeps into Lumberjane territory, but that's what Scouts do!). However, other than camping in the woods, none of the the kids actions were due to them being scouts, they reacted to situations based on their personalities and the need to survive. I hope that in future issues, they use some of their scouting skills to assist them along the way.
The story gave me strong vibes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossed with Scooby Doo - a wonderful combination! At times, it is a little overdramatic (we are the only ones that possibly save the town!) - but that's part of the fun. Note: There are some fun references to awesome TV shows when the Ghoul Scouts arrive in town. See if you can spot them! :)
There were moments when I needed to suspend my disbelief and along this line my biggest gripe is the use of projectiles as weapons. Trey does state that he will need to pick up his four potatoes and keep reusing them in his potato gun. And Becky must have to do the same. But in almost every scene the Scouts are SURROUNDED by zombies. When is there time (or enough space) to be collecting their weapons to reuse?!
The art style was fun and the colouring was always bright. Dark enough to have a spooky vibe, but not scary. The humour was pretty light, so I hope that increases in future issues as that would certainly make the story more enjoyable to me.
Great bonus features as I love seeing 'in-progress' works. The added commentary was interesting, especially the work of the digital colourists.
The story is left open to encounter future mystical creatures and unravel the mystery of the town and its citizens. I thought that this was a cute read, and I look forward to reading about further adventures of the 'Ghoul Scouts'.

As the title implies, scouts are attacked by zombies. Five survive, armed with baseball bats, frying pans, slingshots, and a potato gun. A little hilarity and a lot of fright ensues.
When it comes down to it, it’s a funny bit of fluff without anything meaningful to it, so as far as entertaining pre-teens or so, it works, even though the ending was too a bit of a cop-out. I just want to know how these zombies found the intelligence and patience to climb into a suit of armor and then wait to spring the ambush!
After the first few chapters there’s some sketches, and there’s a “making of” little documentary toward the end.

This is a great Zombie graphic novel for kids of all ages and in a world of comics that are rarely all-age friendly this is a breath of fresh air to a genre that's not so friendly for kids anymore.
Well worth checking out, especially if you're looking for something a kid could read without out feeling bad for its content.

Campy portrayal of a zombie apocalypse. This series is geared more towards young kids, and young at heart.

Love the name of this comic so much! I'm very interested to see how the story develops. I adore the characters and pop culture references.
