This lightly spiced drink has an earthy, peppery base note thanks to a healthy dose of fresh turmeric. A touch of honey adds just the right amount of sweetness, while the ginger and black pepper add a little heat.

Editor’s note: This headnote has been updated as a part of our archive repair project.

Ingredients

Makes 2 cups

1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk, preferably coconut milk beverage or almond milk
1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick
1 (1-inch) piece turmeric, unpeeled, thinly sliced, or 1/2 teaspoon dried turmeric
1 (1/2-inch) piece ginger, unpeeled, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil
1/4 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
Ground cinnamon (for serving)

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Whisk coconut milk, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, honey, coconut oil, peppercorns, and 1 cup water in a small saucepan; bring to a low boil. Reduce heat and simmer until flavors have melded, about 10 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs and top with a dash of cinnamon.

  2. Do Ahead

    Step 2

Golden milk can be made 5 days ahead. Store in an airtight container and chill. Warm before serving.

Cooks' Note

Using fresh turmeric adds a clean, bright flavor to this drink, but dried turmeric can be substituted when fresh is not available. Keep in mind that dried turmeric will settle to the bottom of the mug, so stir well before drinking.

  • Q. What is the point of the coconut 🥥 oil? Is it really needed? A. Turmeric is oil soluble and will increase bioavailabilty during digestion. Pepper will increase that even more. Plus, it's good calories.

  • I've made this before, but it's been a while. I made some tonite, following the directions as listed above. I'm mainly using Oat Milk now and I found it to nicely add to the richness. I also threw in some cloves and some seeds from two Cardamom pods. Like others recommended, I added in the honey after removing from the heat. I simmered for 15 minutes and I was left with about enough to fill my mug only half way. Next time I will double the water and the Oat Milk. love this recipe!

  • Delicious. And yes, I used CANNED coconut milk. For those who are suggesting canned coconut milk is NOT the same as what you find in the refrigerated section. Yes they are right. What is in those cartons is much more diluted with water than what comes in the can. As suggested by another reviewer. I used full fat canned coconut milk and left out the coconut oil. The full fat of the milk should be sufficient for the solubility of the turmeric. I used everything else in the recipe as stated using ground turmeric as I didn't have fresh but everything else as stated. (My ground turmeric was freshly ground from Spicewalla.) Made it for myself and my husband. We both liked it.

  • I followed the tip to just use full fat coconut milk and O.M.G. I hope Costco sells coconut milk by the case because I'm going to be making large batches of this like another reviewer does! Mine didn't come out quite as yellow as in the picture but perhaps that's because I used fresh turmeric. I also didn't measure out the coconut milk...I just used the entire can and added 1/2 cup of whole milk (but I did divide it into two servings). I added the honey after straining so as to not ruin the beneficial properties associated with the honey and I agree, the sprinkle of cinnamon on the top is a must.

  • Lisa, thanks for the tip about using full fat coconut milk. To simplify things, I used a can of it and a can of water, and I slightly increased the spices. Delicious! [I feel so righteous when I drink something so healthy that is wonderful!] Danielle, did you add 1 cup of water?

  • I've made this a million times. My recommendation is to skip the coconut oil and the coconut/almond or whatever milk beverage and just use full fat canned coconut milk in place of both ingredients. The result is a well-blended, creamy beverage that is very good for you. The full fat is good for you and is needed to give this beverage full health benefits.

  • I made this with cashew milk and powdered spices, I really liked it! It’s nice on a cold day. I also blended mine so the oil wasn’t floating at the top.

  • This is so delicious but I'm only getting one serving/one cup from one cup of almond milk -- and not two as what is indicated -- is that a typo?

  • I haven’t made this recipe, but to answer ?s turmeric is fat soluble so you need fat and pepper makes the turmeric more effective. I make a paste, jar it and then put some in my milk when I heat it up. I’ve made with fresh turmeric, but will assume when you make a paste you don’t have the turmeric powder settle to the bottom.

  • thought it was delicious using almond milk. nice blend of spice. didn't have coconut oil on hand, so will try this again with coconut milk beverage without coconut oil or a reduced amount per other reviewers.

  • Another reviewer mentioned that the coconut oil might be necessary to get the full benefit of the turmeric. Can anyone confirm this? This looks like an interesting recipe but I'd like to make without the added fat if not needed.
