VOTE!

Cartoon by Nate Beeler, 2013.

Normally on Tuesdays, I run an "On History" piece on my blog. As it's election day here in the US, I considered running some historically themed election comics. But, for as apolitical as I normally try to keep most of my writing, I don't feel I should do that today.

If you've read my blog for any length of time, you've probably sussed that I tend to skew pretty liberal in my views. So it wouldn't surprise you to learn that I voted for Clinton. (Past tense. I did early voting about a week and half ago.) I don't agree with her on all of her policies... but I have never agreed with any politician on all of their policies. My ideal candidate will never come along. But I agree with the broad strokes of Clinton's general outline to continue the positive direction the country has been heading in over the past eight years.

I can't say anything about Trump you haven't already heard. I can say, without hyperbole, that I disagree with every one of his policies. I think his entire worldview is flatly wrong. His temperment and demeanor, however ugly they are, don't even enter the picture for me.

And more than that, I think he and/or Pence would push an agenda that would be actively and personally dangerous for a good percentage of the popluation. My wife is Black. Her family is Black. Some of them are immigrants. I have friends who have immigrated here from other countries. I have gay and lesbian friends. I don't know any of them that aren't downright fearful of how a Trump presidency might physically harm them, and I can't say those fears aren't justified. Trump (and the entire GOP to a somewhat less blatant extent) have tried to make fear of the other as a matter of legal policy, as well as encouraged violence against them. They've expressly said they've wanted to enact laws that sanction violence against minorities. Voting for people who make racist, homophobic, etc. laws means you're supporting those policies. You're saying the lives of my friends and family -- my wife -- are unimportant and not worthy of basic human dignity.

Go out today and vote if you haven't already. But if you vote for Trump, I want you to be prepared to look me in the eye and tell me why you think the life and well-being of my wife is worth nothing. Because that's exactly what your vote is saying.

I read on Bleeding Cool that Frank Cho and Frank Miller voted Hillary. I must admit I was surprised at Miller.
