Body-swap movies such as Freaky Friday always make for good comedy, but Your Name, a gorgeous young-adult animation from Japan, takes the concept into more delicate, dreamlike territory as country girl Mitsuha and Tokyo boy Taki wake up in one another’s bodies one morning before school.

The switch begins with hilarity and horror — “Why are you feeling your boobs?” says Mitsuha’s little sister to the female body that now contains Taki’s surprised brain — but thanks to the iPhone these modern body-swappers can leave a diary for each other and even plot dates with other people.

The story explores the contradictions of teenage masculinity and femininity and contrasts Japan past and present: Mitsuha’s grandmother weaves, makes ritual saké and guards a shrine
