Fishless Fish Free Japanese Sea Vegetable and Nori Cakes

These Fishless Japanese Sea Vegetable and Nori Cakes would make a fantastic light starter
I think these Fishless Sea Vegetable Cakes look marvellous without the panko coating that its a shame it has to be cover the colourful seaweed shades of greens.   This is my submission to #EatYourGreens food challenge.  Please do join in with you Green Vegan Mofo blog post, the rules are here.
Before I give you the recipe, I want a little bit of a rant.  Yesterday was not the day we had planned.  All our good plans went pear shaped.  We were on our way to Bristol to celebrate and have a little fun with my nephews, but the icy weather played havoc with our car that we had to turn back home and go to the garage.  It cost us £300.00.  Happy Birthday. There was no point in grumbling but I was very mift and wished we had never left the house in the first place.  All the signs with the weather were warning us to stay indoors.  When we got back home we just tried to make the best of what was left of the day at home and outside it poured ice buckets.

Anyway, I digress.  I had so much fun getting back into Food 'N' Flix, so I am joining again.  The movie chosen this month is Burnt.  As a foodies, I have to admit I had not seen it or heard of it and to be honest, I am not a fan of either Bradley Cooper or Sienna Miller, but I wanted to play along with Food N Flix,  so I purchased the film.  I watched it one weekend.
Although there are loads of food references, it did not terribly inspire me - perhaps because I am a Vegetarian and many of the food references were to meat and seafood, but whilst I was racking my head for ideas the scene when the two lead characters are in Billinsgate Markets,  London's most famous fish market inspired me to make some 'Fish' Cakes.

Of course I was not going to make anything with fish or seafood, but I did have sea vegetables and these Fishless Fishfree Sea Vegetable Cakes were created .

Fishless Japanese Sea Vegetable and Nori Cakes
Makes 8
Ingredients
5g Japanese sea vegetable Salad, reconstituted and drained.  Set aside.

2 teaspoon nori flakes or green Nori Sprinkle
1 packet Smoked tofu, liquid drained, then thinly sliced or crumbled
500g cold mashed potatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
Method
Put all the ingredients in a bowl, except for the panko and combine well so the ingredients are well distributed throughout.
Then divide into eight and make into patty shapes.
In a wide bowl sufficient amount of panko and then gently press the Fishless Sea vegetable cakes into the panko on both sides and the edges.  the panko should should stick.  If you find that it does does then make flax egg, but I did not feel it was necessary.
Put the Fishless Sea Vegetable Cakes in fridge to firm up until ready to serve.
When ready to serve, remove from the fridge heat some oil in a wide frying pan and shallow fry on both sides until golden and warmed through.
Feel free to put them in the oven to stay warm to get on with the accompaniments.

    1. Thank you Heather. I hope you get a good smoked tofu, some are stronger in smoky flavour than others.

  3. What a shame about your attempted day trip! The fishless cakes look so good. I don't know where to find panko in Prague, but I would love to get my hands on some and make these.

    1. I know I was really disappointed, but hey these things happen £300 on the car on something that could have been avoided hurts though, hurts a lot. If you can't find panko crumbs, just use dried breadcrumbs or make some yourself from stale bread

  4. Sorry to hear about that (expensive) roadbump on your birthday. I hope you had a great birthday otherwise :)

These look delicious. I love potato any which way and this is a good way to mix it up.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I do like Bradley Cooper.

    1. Thank you Chelsey. You seem to be the only one whose picked up that it was my birthday - thank you x I had a lazy day otherwise, but i would have loved to have gone to Bristol as there was a Vegan Food Fair on and i was hoping to treat myself to some cake....If you lived in the Uk, I'd be more than happy to have posted the DVD copy of the movie I have.

  5. These sound really good - I like the sound of mixing potatoes, smokey tofu and "fishy" vegetables (wish I had a better adjectives for food from the sea than "fishy"). Sorry to hear about your car. We are at the opposite end of the weather spectrum with weather forecast to be 38 C today and it isn't even summer - it was only 35 C according to reports I have heard but I hope it does not mean a hot summer!

    1. Thank you Johanna, they really were - though D the pescetarian that he is (he became a vegetarian for me, gave up red meat and white, but not seafood) suggested I could have put in salmon for him instead of the smoked tofu, but he still enjoyed it very much. I am thankful for cooler weather, but its the ice and constant buckets of rain that is yucky. I was literally soaked to the bone today to and fro work - so glad to be back at home now in the warmth.

  6. This is a really interesting recipe and one I would never have thought of, where did you get the sea vegetable salad? What are sea vegetables, anyway? Thanks for joining in with Food 'n' Flix!

  7. I'm sorry to hear about your interrupted day and that hefty car bill. There has been some awful weather around this week and it sounds like you got the brunt of it!

On a more positive note, these are fantastic and so clever as I imagine they are very fish like whilst being veggie.

    1. Thanks Kari, it was annoying but its done now. We have been lucky compared to some places, fingers crossed no floods but we are up in the valleys, its the heavy snow that will get us snowed in and the car will probably not start and if it does, won't make it steady down the hill... so something to look forward too - we do need a hard winter though to kill those germs.

Def. fish like, my husband eats fish and was satisfied with them and the sea veg made for an interesting change

  9. Do they taste fishy? I'm intrigued to ry them. I love a bit of seaweed, but normally just as a side salad, it'd be nice to use it in a more substantial meal!

    1. Hi Joey,
No not fish at all, but more taste like the sea - more seaweed and taste of the sea in respect to the the aroma too. Have you seen my Seaweed Pasta recipe?
