White House lit pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

To kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the White House turned a bubblegum shade of pink Sunday night.

First Lady Melania Trump shared a photo from inside the White House on Twitter, which was lit up with various luminations to show support for the campaign. "In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we lit the @WhiteHouse pink!" she captioned the Tweet.

FLOTUS further echoed these thoughts in a recent statement released by the White House, encouraging many to take the necessary "steps to reduce their risk of the disease."

"During October, we raise awareness and encourage people to take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer," said First Lady Melania Trump. "I encourage all women to talk to their healthcare providers about mammograms and other methods of early detection and what can be done to reduce that risk," she said.

The tradition of lighting up the White House began in Bush's second term and was carried through both of Obama's terms. Despite the Trumps continuing the custom, Melania was slammed on Twitter for her husband's administration's controversial take on health care.

Others, however, praised FLOTUS' support.
