Abstract: Objective To observe the effectiveness of electromyographic biofeedback (EMGBF) in the rehabilitation of children with severe hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD).Methods Thirty-six children with severe HFMD and acute flaccid paralysis were randomly divided into EMGBF group and control group.Children in both groups were treated by mobilization treatment, isokinetic exercise, conductive education and ordinary acupuncture treatment. In the addition, children in EMGBF group were also treated with MyoTrac Electromyographic biofeedback system.Range of motion (ROM) of ankle as well as integrated electromyogram (iEMG) of musculi tibialis anterior were checked before and after treatments. Results The ROM and iEMG were both improved in the two groups after treatment compared with that before treatment, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Compared with control group, the ROM and iEMG in the EMGBF group were much better, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion EMGBF could significantly improve the motor function of lower limbs of children with severe HFMD and acute flaccid paralysis, which could be used as an effective method in the rehabilitation of these children.
