Abstract: Objective To observe the effect of atorvastatin on heme oxygenase in both parietal cortex and cerebellum in model rats with Alzheimer''s disease induced by beta-amyloid protein (1-42).Methods Forty Wistar rats were randomly divided into normal control group, statin control group, model control group and statin treatment group, ten rats in each group. Then the expressions of HO-1 and HO-2 in both parietal cortex and cerebellum were detected by Western blot method. Results In parietal cortex area, the HO-1 expression in the statin treatment group increased and showed statistically significant difference compared with that in the other three groups, however, there was no significant difference in terms of HO-2 expression among the four groups. In cerebellum area, the statin treatment group showed the increased HO-2 expression and presented significant difference in comparison to others, but no significant difference was found on HO-1 expression among the four groups. Conclusion Atorvastatin can up-regulate the expressions of both HO-1 and HO-2 in different parts of the brain and can alleviate the damage of central nervous system.
