Yara Greyjoy is the daughter of Balon Greyjoy, and sister of Theon Greyjoy.

Despite the lower status of women on the Iron Islands, Yara has managed to gain renown and respect amongst the ironborn, due to her prowess as a sailor, a warrior, and a leader.

She is among Balon's most trusted reaver captains, and participates in his second rebellion during the War of the Five Kings. After her brother's capture by Ramsay Snow, Yara leads a rescue attempt against the wishes of her father, but is unsuccessful in bringing back Theon.

After the death of her father, Yara attempts to take control of the Iron Islands at the kingsmoot, but is narrowly defeated by her uncle, Euron Greyjoy. Yara refuses to accept his rule though, and she and her supporters leave the Iron Islands with many of the fleet's best ships.

She sails to Essos to forge an alliance with Daenerys Targaryen, and uses her fleet to bring Daenerys's armies to Dragonstone. While traveling to Dorne to bring more forces to Daenerys's cause, she is ambushed by Euron's fleet, and captured.

Meta

In the books, this character is named Asha, but the producers of the show thought that having an Asha and an Osha (the wilding woman at Winterfell) would be too confusing for the audience to tell apart.

In the TV series she is played by Gemma Whelan.
