1985 Two-Tone Rolex GMT-Master Reference 16753

Regular price $5,800

Why This Watch Matters

With a lightly faded bezel and beautifully contrasting black and gold color palette, this GMT shines.

The Full Story

If you're going to wear a two-tone watch, Rolex makes a strong case with their two-tone examples. The manufacturer has mastered the art of marrying the functionality of the tool watch with the decadence of precious metals. Lest we overindulge in opulence though, the inclusion of stainless steel mitigates a complete loss of robust functionality. The GMT-Master, first created in 1954 with the reference 6542, was intended for use in the field of aviation. The reference 16753 belongs to the third generation of the GMT-Master, and was produced between 1981 and 1988. In comparison to its predecessor (the reference 1675), the stainless-steel 16750, yellow-gold 16758 (with a sapphire crystal), and two-tone (the black and gold version you see here, as well as the beloved "Root Beer" reference) 16753 all offer a quick-set date and a higher beat for its automatic movement with GMT complication.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This is an attractive (and fun!) watch to wear. The case shows some signs of light polishing, but you can still see the bevels on the lugs. The bezel shows some wear, including a scratch between the 20 and 2 hour markers. The golden numerals have faded evenly, creating almost an ombré effect. The dial is in excellent condition, with the handset matching the lume plots with yellow-gold surrounds perfectly. A few of the lume plots exhibit some bruising, but this is mostly visible under a 10x loupe. There is a small blemish to the crystal at five o'clock.
