The Chamber of Commerce’s Defense of Its Endorsements

To the Editor:

Re “The Chamber of Commerce’s Partisanship” (letter, Oct. 27):

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has supported Republicans, Democrats and independents in the past, and this year is no different. Just recently, we endorsed an independent candidate for Congress, Martin Babinec, over his Republican opponent. Why? Because his policies are better for our economy.

Our criteria for endorsement haven’t changed over the years. We support the candidate who is strongest on pro-business policies that will grow the economy and create jobs, regardless of party affiliation. Period. And once the voters decide, we work with anyone willing to move pro-growth, pro-business ideas forward.

We worked with Senator Evan Bayh during and after his time in the Senate. Had he supported pro-growth policies during his current campaign — and to a greater extent than his rivals — we would have endorsed him. He did not, and that is why the chamber stands behind Todd Young. Mr. Young has a 91 percent pro-business voting record over his career, as opposed to Mr. Bayh’s 55 percent.

Regardless of party, those who support American free enterprise will find no greater friend.
