Meh.

I'm almost always willing to take a chance on a new audiobook, especially with an interesting concept and a good audio sample, so I decided to try The Soldati Prince.

First of all, the narrator does a decent job with the story, even though his cadence sometimes rang a little... child-like, I'm going to call it. A little sing-songy at times. However, his accent was a breath of fresh air, and I liked the more diverse feel that it gave to the story.

The story itself felt really muddled. I love the "fish out of water" trope in romance, but things moved too quickly and resolved too easily for my taste. Novella are a really hard format, and I don't think Charlie Cochet got the balance exactly right.

Not a stellar listen but not a terrible on either.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*It's sad when it had so much potential*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

The book centers around human Riley Murrough and Khalon, the shifter king. After Riley finds out that he bears the mark of a shape-shifter king from a magical realm, and that he’s destined to become the mated prince to the arrogant tiger shifter, after a bunch of Demons attacked him. Khalon, who is no less annoying at the fact that he's supposed to be mated to a human prince, sets out along side his Soldati warriors to bring the Riley home, thinking a human wearing his mark is a humiliation and plans to see the great priestess to fix it. This is the start of a life changing situation for a man who never found his place until now and a king who can let his arrogance cloud his judgment.
“Please don’t kill me.”
The man’s eyes widened. “You see me?”
Shit. “Um, no. Didn’t see a thing.” Riley got up and held a hand up in front of him. Two equally muscular men and Wonder Woman joined their friend. The others had changed too. This was crazy. Riley backed away slowly. “I’m, uh, I’m gonna go check myself into a hospital about my, uh, not seeing you guys. Excuse me.”

Overall, the story has huge potential. Seriously, I'm speaking the truth here. The realm of the Soldati (Upstate New York, invisible to humans) is quite an interesting world with interesting characters, there's lots of potential with the world build up. I could've definitely pictured a whole series like the Guild Hunters or the Elder Races . With strong, powerful characters, a world filled with magic and demons. Light and darkness.... Like I said huge potential.
“Those demons were trying to kill you to get to me.” Khalon clasped his hands behind his back and paced slowly before Riley. Just the sight of him was enough to boil Khalon’s blood. Madness. Absolute madness.
“Why? We’ve never met before today. I don’t even know who the hell you are.”
“I am Khalon, king of the Soldati, and I am your mate.” Saying the words alone pained him greatly.
“Hey, if you want to be friends, that’s cool, but friends don’t kidnap each other or chain each other up. Okay, maybe some do, but why don’t we start small? Maybe grab a cup of coffee instead?”
Khalon stopped pacing. “What?”

However, - yes, there's a ‘however’ - there's the insta-love that ruined the whole story and, - yes, the insta-love wasn't the only thing bothering me - it was too damn short. It could've been so much more here, that I'm almost annoyed at the potential missed. It had only needed like a 100 pages more or something to build the world and make characters/relationship development. So to summary; it was too short, had insta-love, had so much potential and it was still a enjoyable read, with likable characters. I can totally see myself loving it if it had lived up to it's potential. I just wished we had gotten more pages to get to know the properly, and that they - Riley and Khalon - could get to know each other as the pages went. The timeline was only of two weeks :/ I'm 98% sure I won't read the next book. I already know who it'll be about. It's pretty predictable.
“Does it ever stop feeling so horrible?”
Toka shook his head sadly, his eyes on the spot where Rayner had disappeared. “He takes my heart with him every time he goes off to battle, leaving me hollow until his return.”

Quites/Facts From The Book:

“Our world has always existed alongside yours, protected and hidden by magic wards. For centuries the growing discord in both our worlds has begun to weaken the wards, allowing those bound to our world to slip through into the human world. Demons are notorious for slipping through, but the Soldati have hunted them since before humans walked this earth.”
“Speaking of Soldati. What’s the deal with King Crabby-Pants?”
Toka took a nibble of what looked like a sugar cookie, only fancier. “He’s not as bad as he seems.”
“You mean he’s only a self-absorbed prick some of the time?”

Other Characters:
Rayner, Adira and Ezra, Khalon's Soldati warriors. Rayner is his second-in-command. His fiercest warrior, trusted confidant, and his best friend. Rayner was a Soldati, the most powerful next to Khalon himself.
Toka, a foxling servant. As are the rest of the servants. His animal form is a red fox. Foxlings vary in species.
Tura, a marble foxling. Rayner's tailor.
Angi, a foxling servant.
Flora and her mate, Lasa, and Tinia, their daughter, a kit foxling family in the village of Selvan
A distinct clearing of the throat brought their passion to a screeching halt. Khalon pulled abruptly away, his face heated and undoubtedly as red as it felt. “I, um, forgive me,” he said, sounding breathless. Goddess above, what was the matter with him? Behaving like some fledgling Soldati.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/M).
Series: - Series, Book One.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Riley Murrough.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure, if you don't mind insta-love (which I hate).
Will I read this again in the future? - Probably not.
Rating - 3 (it had so much potential) stars.

This was a promising start to a new fantasy series by the ever-impressive M/M author Charlie Cochet.

When Riley (a human) is attacked by corpse like demons and then is rescued by a bunch of tigers, he thinks he’s going mad. Then the tigers turn into hot-as-sin warriors who whisk Riley away to a different realm – one where tiger shifters are royal warriors called the Soldati and Riley just happens to be the destined mate of their king, Khalon.

This was a fun and engaging little opening to what I’m confident will be a great series. I enjoyed the world-building and the shifter lore created here. I look forward to reading the sequel and learning more about the Soldati and the Foxlings.

A solid start to a new shifter series, with unique world building and paranormal lore.

Riley is just an ordinary guy, living an ordinary life - that is, until he finds himself in the most absurd, but fantastical, situation ever. Swept to another realm, he’s told he’s the mate of a King. A tiger shifter King, no less.

Khalon can hardly believe his horrible luck. He’s waited a long time for his fated mate - someone who will be a strong warrior and magically fierce, but all he sees is a scrawny human. There must be some mistake.

So of course these two fight and bicker, and are determined to get out of their current predicament. However, the more time they spend together, attraction and respect slowly increase, blurring the lines of their original goals.

For those who enjoyed Cronin's Key, this is similar regarding certain themes - destined mates, hidden powers, dire prophecies, and possessive potential love. This could’ve gone down into trite and boring, but I have complete faith in Cochet now, having read the genius that became THIRDS. This here is obviously an introduction, and I’m definitely intrigued enough to see what lies ahead.

Poor Riley. One minute he’s closing up the coffee shop stuffing his face with leftover desserts. The next minute he’s running from black soulless demons down the alley. Next thing he knows, he’s in another realm altogether.

Khalon is the Soldati king. He’s been waiting for his prince to come so he can gain more power and have someone to help him protect the humans from the demons. Imagine his surprise when he finds his mate being attacked by the demons. But his biggest concern? His mate is a lowly human with no powers who isn’t strong and powerful and he’ll never survive in the Soldati’s kingdom.

I loved Riley. He was sweet and funny. He easily accepted where he was and what needed to be done. Khalon was a different story. I disliked him for probably 90% of the story. He was an arrogant ass who thought he deserved someone better and stronger and just KNEW the priestess made a mistake. He’s rude and he says some hateful things to Riley that pissed me off. It takes before he gets his head out of his ass. To me it was too little too late for me to like him.

I do wish this was longer and fleshed out more. It really had great potential to be longer and I would have liked to see them building their relationship more. But it held my attention and I’m looking forward to more in the series.

First of all, thank you, Manouchka, for lending me this book. It was perfect for my challenge. I really appreciate it, but I am afraid I am going to disappoint you with my review. Sorry about that :/

For some reason, I had high hopes for this book, even after reading Hell & High Water. Not sure what it was - the cover? - the blurb? - that made me curious about it.

Even after I started reading and then double and triple checked my shelves to make sure I've never read this story before (because it felt like I did), I was still sold on it. I am a sucker for unsuspecting humans being dragged into the world of magic. Big cold alphas and puny little (yet snarky, very snarky, and funny, too) humans is also my thing. So I gave this book a chance.

But around 40% in it all fell apart. It turned too sweet and too sugary and there were too many children wrapping everyone in sight around their little foxling's paws (cute, but that's not what the blurb promised!) And it was just downhill from there :( Rainbows, unicorns and lollipops :(

1 star.

PS And cupcakes.

Enjoyed it still!!

********************************

The narration, though not flawless, was engaging and very very well done. It secured the rating for this book.

I loved everything about this story and loved how light hearted it came across even through all the icky parts. I felt the world building was adequate for a first book in a series and didn’t really think I needed more to make the reading experience more fulfilling on that front. Riley was a sweetheart and while Khalon started out as an ass, I quickly warmed up to him.

My only issues faced were the length of the book and how it ended. It really could’ve benefited from a long, proper epilogue in my humble opinion and a more thorough resolution to Riley’s predicament than a literal “one and done” scenario.

Other than that, everything was great and it’s off to Toka’s book!

2.5 Stars......Hmmmmm.....welll, I liked the shell of the story I was provided. And the kiddie pool complexity of the MCs was cute enough to splash around in-for all of two seconds. And the writing style felt very strongly middle school, as did the length.

Honestly, I expected quite a bit more from Charlie Cochet. I love her THIRDS series. This just felt like a writing exercise never fully realized. The bones of the story are there, they just need to add the meat and spices we adults can savor.

Sorry Charlie.

Riley leaves his work one evening and is attacked by zombie-like demons. His WTF meter is pinging loudly, and he has no idea what is happening, especially when four large tigers show up to save him. He's convinced he needs to check himself into the nearest mental health facility until he is wisked, instead, to an AU where he learns he is the Soldati Prince, betrothed through Fate to the King of the Soldati, Khalon.

Khalon is disheartened to learn that a mortal human could be his Prince, and he makes no bones about sharing that opinion with everyone, including Riley. It's their journey to finding each other, even though neither particularly cares for the other (in the beginning) that Cochet unveils through this story.

This one was a riveting and interesting book. I was very impressed with Cochet's ability to adequately build this world in a novella-length book. That's not an easy task.

What was a tad lacking, however, was the romance. I know (or think, at least) that this is the first in a new series about the Soldati. And maybe Riley and Khalon's story will continue, which I hope. But because this was a novella, and Cochet had to fit in SO MUCH world-building, the romance was on the slim side for my personal tastes.

We get a tentative HFN. An "ok, I like you, let's see where this goes," if you will. And while I appreciate that their story may continue in a future book, that isn't enough to satisfy my romantic appetite in the here and now. I need at least declarations.

So I'll settle on three stars because I love Cochet's writing, and the story-telling is really amazing. If I could've gotten more Riley and Khalon in THIS book, I would be a happy camper.

The Soldati Prince is an expanded version of Charlie Cochet’s short story of the same name in the (incredibly fabulous) Charmed and Dangerous anthology. I loved that original story when I read it and was hoping for more books set in this world, so I was thrilled to see this new edition and plans for a further series. This is still a fairy short book (around 100 pages), but it is longer than the original and expands the development of Riley and Khalon’s relationship.

What I most loved about the original story was the interplay between the two men. Riley is feisty and tough and even though he is a human in a world of powerful warriors, he isn’t easily intimidated. Khalon is pretty surly at first, disappointed at this human mate, frustrated that Riley challenges him, and torn between wanting Riley and knowing he can’t have him. So they are at odds right away and I love how Riley can’t quite stop himself from provoking Khalon when the king is arrogant or grouchy. As they get to know each other, this banter fades a little, which is kind of disappointing as I loved the dynamic between them. But even so, I really enjoyed these guys together. I wish that the romantic, sexy times had come a little earlier. There is a lot of middle where they are waiting around to travel and though they are getting to know one another, the romantic relationship doesn’t move very fast. But I found them a likable pair and I think Cochet does a nice job pulling things together for them in the end.

Riley works in a New York coffee shop, when he is suddenly pulled into another world, full of warriors, Tiger shifters, demons, and magic. Khalon the Tiger shifter and king of this world protects him but behaves like a jerk. Turns out, that Riley is supposed to be the mate, Khalon has been waiting for several centuries. However, he, a weak and powerless human could certainly not give Khalon what he needs, a strong and equal mate and partner, living and fighting by his side, or could he?
They leave for the priestess to clarify how this mistake could be made and have Riley returned home to his world, but the demons do not want to let them reach their destination.
This was a short but really surprisingly entertaining novella. I loved almost everything about it. The M/C`s were interesting and funny:
"I hate to break it to you, but I'm just a regular guy. Unless cooking the perfect poached egg becomes a superpower I've got nothing" Toka smiled sweetly "We'll see."
The idea and the blurb were also very appealing.
Ok I cannot deny that the book had certain flaws. The writing was not always perfect, the fantasy world sometimes not thought through properly and some of the actions were not really convincing, especially concerning the demons. Also, Khalons change from perfect asshole to caring king and loving partner was way too quick and not very believable.
But you know how it is, if the story is good and you are hooked you are very likely to forgive minor flaws and just enjoy what you get.
For me, this definitely was the case here, I had a great time reading about those 2 and especially Riley was absolutely adorable!
Great read and above average 3.5 stars from me.

67% - Khalon! Don’t say that! You’re going to make things worse! Khalon you’re such an asshole! I get why your saying/doing it but you sir are an asshole!

68% - Riley is a better person than me. I would be a petty bitch right till the wnd

70% - Khalon! Stop being a dick!

82% - OMG I’m gonna cry! Either I’m more invested than I thought I was or it’s just been an emotional week and I’m letting them out.

Final Thoughts:

I liked it! I am always a fan of the enemies-to-lovers or Hate-to-Love trope and it was in here so I may be a bit biased. Overall, I enjoyed my experience. But I won’t continue right away. I may not read the rest of the series. Not because this book was bad but simply because this one book may be enough for me.

Voto: 4.5 stelline.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because still no 1/2 stars here on GR and Yeah!!! For audio books...sometimes it is more fun to listen than read.

Well that was totally delightful...

Riley works in a bakeshop and the most magical thing in his world is lemon cake...that is until the night he 's saved from zombie like creatures that spew black ooze by tiger-shifting Soldati warriors...one of whom might just be the Soldati king and Riley's mate...oh hell no!!! Neither of them are overly pleased with that little tidbit.

Once Khalon and his warriors realize that Riley is his mate they have no choice but to take him back with them...at least until they can find a way to make him safe from the demons and then they can wipe his memory and return him to his world where he belongs.

As Khalon and Riley travel to see the priestess and get their bond dissolved so that Riley can return home. They begin to spend time with each other, find out more about each other and inevitably neither of them can deny the pull of attraction that they are feeling for each other.

I loved listening to this one on audio and I have to admit as an audio story it worked really well for me. This was so much like having someone read me a story...hey, what can I say I came from a large family and bedtime stories were a very rare event so now here I am all grown up and once in a while it's nice to have someone tell me a story and this one...well this one was definitely an adult fairy tale and I loved it.

All that was missing to make this perfect was a...ok, I'm not going to say it...dragon!!! Come on you thought I wouldn't say it? But seriously tiger-shifters! They count for a lot...oh and foxlings...cute little foxlings so no dragons but lots of other awesomeness.

I really enjoyed this story but I think for me it would have been so much better if there'd been a bit more development in the romance department and maybe a bit more after things were resolved to show us more of Khalon and Riley together as a couple, but this is a series so hopefully that'll come with time, right?

Manuel Pombo was the narrator for this story and I really enjoyed listening to his narration of this story. Not only did he check off my basic 'things I like to hear in an audio book' list but he gave it that bit of extra that for me is the difference between a solid or good audio experience and a truly enjoyable audio experience.

For me this story was probably 3 maybe 3.5 stars while the audio took it to a solid 3.5 maybe even 4 stars for me. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what comes next in the world of 'The Soldati' and hopefully Mr. Pombo will be on board to tell me another story.

The story has an interesting premise: Tiger shifters battle demons through different dimensions, and during one such battle the Soldati King finds his fated mate, who is human.

Much of the world building is through exposition and the action is off page quite a bit, which isn't unusual given this is such a short novella, but in all I thought there was a good amount of world building throughout. The biggest surprise, for me, was how scant the romance aspect of this was especially for a fated mates story.

Manuel Pombo is a new to me narrator. He has a stronger Mexican accent, which is pleasant to listen to, and gave the male character voices, especially the tiger shifters, a strong, masculine sound. I'll admit I was a bit surprised at how he voiced Riley Murrough, mostly because I pictured Riley to have a more New York Irish kind of accent when I read the story.

Pombo does perform different character voices, but they were not always completely distinguishable from one another. I really liked his voice and tone for Khalon, but I did notice that Pombo sometimes lost an accent he was attributing to a character and would then pick it up again later.

He has good breath spacing, but his pacing and tone were off quite a lot in the beginning, and his pronunciation of some words was odd to me and had me stopping to rewind to figure out a particular word (i.e.: sleight sounding like slate).

All of that being said, this really wasn't an unpleasant listen, I mostly enjoyed the narration, especially as Pombo progressed, and the story was interesting with a strong HFN ending setting up a potential series.

And so a new series is born! The Soldati Prince was so much better than I thought it would be. I admit to being nervous at first. I wasn’t sure I’d like it but I am a huge Charlie Cochet fan so I was absolutely up for giving it a shot. So glad I did.

It opens with us meeting Riley having conflicted dessert feelings. It was in that first paragraph I knew I was going to love him. He’s feisty, hilarious, sweet, and kind. He doesn’t take crap from anyone, even the Soldati King. Khalon, the shifter king is so not thrilled with the fact he’s mated with a human and he’s not secretive about it. Their banter is epic. Oh how I laughed my butt of with the dialog! I love witty characters and Riley was totally one and Khalon is the grumpy alpha guy you want to thump on the head.

With demons trying to kill Riley and a journey to the High Priestess to undo this obvious mistake we’re taken on a wonderful journey. One of laughter, growing love, understanding, and outstanding bravery.

I absolutely adored this story. The secondary characters were just as wonderful as the MCs. The concept is brilliant and I can absolutely see that this series is going to be beyond words amazing!
This is a fantasy. It has magic and paranormal activity so if that and hilarious and entertaining characters is your thing than give this book a shot!

It's an interesting premise with decent world building, and a good start to a potential series.

I could understand Khalon's reticence to involve himself with a frail human, which is what mainly caused him to push Riley away.
“Wait, are you saying my soul had an emotional connection with him?”
Rayner nodded. He lowered his head and spoke quietly to him as they walked. “I think you are each as stubborn as the other. I also think the priestess was not mistaken. You were marked as his mate for a reason. Before this adventure is through, we shall discover the purpose. I’m certain of it. His reaction proves it.”

But considering they are basically magical creatures, it seems like Khalon should have had more faith in the High Priestess. Because there's much more at stake than just their love. And it's only by working together and having faith in each other that it will all work out in the end.
So if he was claimed and became the Soldati prince, he wouldn’t be hunted, but was still mortal, and his death would mean Khalon lived his immortal life without a mate. If Riley didn’t accept his position as prince and Khalon didn’t claim him, and Riley were killed, Khalon and the others would be weakened, vulnerable, and be killed. If Riley accepted his position and was killed before he was claimed, Khalon wouldn’t be weakened, but Riley’s soul would be in limbo for eternity.

None of the action is really much on page. Considering this could have been much bloodier or gorier than it turned out to be, I actually thought that was nice. I got the gist without being grossed out with the whole demon slaying parts.

It's a very short novel, and there's quite a bit of world-building packed into it, but it comes at the expense of being shown rather than being told. Additionally, the romance factor is low, especially for a fated mates kind of story.

However, the story held my interest enough to want to continue when book two comes out.

As a fan of Charlie Cochet’s THIRDS series, I had to pick this one up to see if it was as good as her other stories and it comes as no surprise to discover that THE SOLDATI PRINCE is amazing. Packing with humor, this short story had me laughing out loud. Riley is your typical human who seems pretty content in his own life until he is chased by strange creatures and later, he learns that he’s the intended mate for the Soldati king. Riley has no idea what this all means or what they have in store for him but his confusion was absolutely hilarious to witness. He’s such a candid guy that you can’y help but relate to his emotions. When you pair that with Khalon’s grumpy attitude, this entire story becomes one wicked ride.

While Khalon can be an asshole at times, he’s actually the perfect match for Riley. I absolutely loved them together. I couldn’t stop laughing every time Riley did or said something to piss Khalon off. He’s just too awesome for words.

Although this is a novella, Cochet manages to through in action, mystery and humor all into this story. I was really impressed with it and I hope that she continues to write more stories set in this world. I would happily read them and fall more in love with Riley and Khalon.

I'm so happy that Charlie is re-publishing her books and getting fresh new covers. I love everything that she writes and I'm happy to be reading this series again - and getting the final book finally!

(I read this years ago but don't see my review?)

Anyway, Riley is a human who gets dragged into the world of the Soldati, shifters who protect their magical kingdom from demons out to kill them and their mates. Riley finds out that his mate is the king, and he's a gruff jerk when they first meet.

I aways love Charlie's snark and humor laced throughout the interactions between all of the characters. She really excels at writing groups together who know each other so well. It's no exception with this series, where we have Khalon and all of his men around him.

I do agree with others, that the main thing with this story for me, is that it's a novella and things feel rushed at times. For it being the intro into an entire new world, I could have done with a bit more world building and also time for Riley and Khalon together.

Looking forward to seeing how this series will end!

Was ist passiert?

Audiobook review

I think my main feeling after listening to this book is confused. I mean the premise of the book was super-interesting as was the world Cochet created. However, there was so much going on in such a short time that I didn’t quite have the time to really explore it all, it felt rushed. I’m not sure if that was the audio or the writing or a combination of the two. In the end it wasn’t a relaxing listen, I needed to be too focused on the book for that. Added to that I just couldn’t get into the Riley and Khalon’s relationship, it feels wrong to me to even call it a relationship. Fated mates or not, I needed something more.

Manuel Pombo is a new narrator for me and I found his accent to be very refreshing. I couldn’t begin to try to place it, but I enjoyed it all the same. As for his overall narration, there were things that really worked for me and others that didn’t, and some a mix of both. His pacing is slightly faster than the average narrator, which on the one hand I really do like. On the other, it also caused a lot of his narration sound like a reading of the book. Other times though, he lived the story with great feeling and the listener was swept away. At times, his performance didn’t quite ring true and was off the mark just a bit. The characters were very clearly distinguished and consistently so. And as a whole I’m torn.

The Soldati Prince is the first book in a new series, but at this point I don’t think it’s likely that I’m going to continue with the next one.
