In this post-Dexter world we live in. The thought of a serial killer protagonist isn't impossible to imagine. That's the hook with Billy O'Brien's I Am Not a Serial Killer. The story of a sociopathic teenager and the urges he's learning to control.
The funeral home. For most, a creepy place. We look at morticians and funeral directors as odd people. It's not the most popular choice during high school career day. So, our teenage sociopathic protagonist, John Wayne Cleaver already has one strike against him. He helps his overprotective mom run Cleaver Family Funeral Home. Also, he's in therapy to control his killer instinct. His best friend at school is a chubby kid with a Minnesota Mullet. The girl…
John Wayne Cleaver is a bullied teenager and a bit of a weirdo. He's also a sociopath with tendencies common among serial killers. When he has a thought to kill someone he compliments them instead and it quells the urge. When a real serial killer strikes in his small mid-western town, one who takes a different body part from each victim, John sees a call to arms. He uses his own repressed impulses in an attempt to figure out and kill the killer. A killer who just may not be human.
I Am Not a Serial Killer sports the super interesting premise about a young man who will likely be a killer in the future understanding his plight and trying…
How extra-audible windchimes are in the very cold still air after snowfall (Minnesota Winter)!
PS: I am totally this kid's friend who immediately assumes that werewolves did it. I always assume werewolves are responsible for stuff even in the absence of hard evidence of lycanthropic activity and it isn't because I fear or dislike werewolves. I more or less am a werewolf all of the time anyway and so it makes logical sense to me to attribute stuff to them because I can more easily imagine werewolves doing something like that than what probably happened for real, so I look at something and I am like 'Werewolves Did It!' which makes me a better werewolf than a detective probably? Also…
it's really not anything super special, but still a pleasant watch. i had no expectations going in, and i'd definitely say that's the best way to go about watching this, so i don't want to go into detail about my thoughts. it was definitely interesting enough to make me want to check out the novel though, so i would recommend giving this a watch if you haven't already.
there were no subtitles on amazon prime so honestly the old man could have been saying anything the whole film i was just guessing
Holy moly where was this movie when I was 15? I would’ve been OBSESSED!!
So cool. So dark. So freezing cold. Also, very very goth.
I Am Not a Serial Killer is directed by indie filmmaker Billy O'Brian, adapting the first in a series of YA novels by Dan Wells. The film follows a teenage boy by the name of John Wayne Carver (Max Records). John is a social outcast, When he's not a school obsessing about serial killers with his only friend, he spends the rest of his day helping out at his mothers family run morgue.
John believes he's a sociopath with the potential to commit homicide. However he doesn't want to cross that moral line so he imposes strict rules upon himself (a la Dexter) to keep himself from slipping. All is going well for the most part, that is until a…
