The Milwaukee County Jail is located inside the Criminal Justice Center (at right) in downtown Milwaukee.

A 51-year-old male inmate at the Milwaukee County Jail died late Tuesday, authorities said.

The inmate complained of not feeling well around 10 p.m. Tuesday and was taken to the jail clinic where medical staff requested assistance from Milwaukee Fire Department paramedics, according to a news release Wednesday from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

The man lost consciousness at the clinic. "Immediate CPR lifesaving efforts by jail staff and MFD were unsuccessful to revive him," the news release said. The inmate was pronounced dead at the clinic.

He was transported to the jail around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday by the Milwaukee Police Department.

Preliminary results of an autopsy done Wednesday by the Milwaukee County medical examiner's office revealed the inmate had advanced heart disease and a blood clot at the time of death, a news release said.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office is handling the death investigation.

This month, the family of Terrill Thomas, who died of dehydration at the Milwaukee County Jail last year, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit over his death. The lawsuit came 3 months after an inquest jury recommended seven people involved in Thomas' detention be charged with crimes and while District Attorney John Chisholm continues to weigh that decision.

Thomas was one of four people who died at the jail between April and November 2016. One other was a newborn who died after her mother gave birth in a jail cell without any jail staff noticing.

Following those deaths, the Sheriff's Office started hiring additional corrections officers to work at the jail.
