We Want This Lancia-Ferrari Group C Racer Like Nobody’s Business

If you have the means and enjoy driving on racing circuits, chances are you’ve at least considered buying a car dedicated to the purpose.

The Ferrari FXX K, McLaren P1 GTR, or Aston Martin Vulcan are all sure to put your abilities to the test, and a big smile on your face in the process. Or you could pick up an older racing car instead – something like this Lancia-Ferrari sports prototype, for example.

Lancia designed this Group C racer to compete in the same category as the Porsche 956, Jaguar XJR-9, and Mazda 787. But rather than go it alone, Lancia brought together some of its country’s top talents. Abarth and Dallara co-developed the chassis, Ferrari furnished the 2.6-liter twin-turbo V8, and the Martini Racing team put it on the track.

The car was lightning fast, beating its rivals to pole position race after race. Unfortunately, reliability issues precluded the LC2 from winning more than three races, which may make it less than ideal for private use. But what can you do, it’s an Italian prototype from the early 1990s.

This particular example you see here is chassis number 0009, which raced at such tracks as Le Mans, the Nürburgring, and Magny-Cours in France. And now it can be yours, if you place the right bid. It’s just one among the hundreds of vehicles lined up for RM Sotheby’s Duemila Ruote sale in Milan next month, where it’s set to cross the auction block with no reserve price.
