Despite years of training in how to properly care for other people, doctors often forget to take care of themselves. Self-neglect is not just bad for the doctor – it can also have negative consequences on patients. To deal with physician burnout, Colorado hospitals are implementing a voluntary program that helps medical personnel to both build resilience and to recapture the fulfillment that originally led them to a career in medicine.

As part of the program, participating doctors receive weekly emails to help them reflect on their lives and work. They also take part in monthly 45-minute meetings that are led by a group facilitator. Some hospitals also hold quarterly dinner meetings or annual retreats for doctors to help prevent future burnout.
