Frankie B. Rabbit, former rapper turned writer has written a helpful little book for any young child fearful of starting back to school in a new school. With great illustrations done in a sparse, modern style, this book conveys the inner turmoil that Dynomike feels when starting a new school. He is fraught with indecision, what to wear, how will he come across. Barely able to make it out the door, his mother convinces him that he should just be himself and he will be just fine. She is right. Not only is Dynomike just fine, he makes a lot of new, interesting friends along the way during his first day of school in a new place. An age appropriate book for children in early grades who may be struggling with school anxiety told in a very relatable way. Highly recommend for worried parents and kids alike.

‘Be yourself and be kind’

New Jersey author Frankie B. Rabbit has been a hop-hop artist/rapper and now is trying his talent at writing. According to his biographical data, ‘while his rap career was dragging with monotony, he enters, yet another, freestyle rap battle at B.B. Kings in New York City—which ended being his last rap battle after being defeated by an 8 year old second grader in the first round—his name was Dynomike! “The lyrical niceness, my rhymes so tight I give nightmares to vice grips! This mic is five bucks, this night is five bucks, and Dynomike is — is priceless!” That was only one of the sixteen bars he dropped on Frankie B. Rabbit.’ And there is the inspiration for his first book DYNOMIKE BACK TO SCHOOL. The illustrations are by Lou Francis Isip

Frankie’s little story and new character Dynomike are related in excellent rhyme: to give and idea, the fist page reads ‘Back to school he goes with a stack of new books he chose. Preparing for a new class with new kids, new facts, and perhaps some new pants and new clothes.’ This is lyrical, likely influenced by the author’s musical background. Dynomike goes though changes of clothes and hats and finally settles on an outfit that includes his yellow vest. He is still feeling threatened about his appearance and about school in general – how he will be perceived – even when his DynoMom reinforces his positive look. He considers faking illness or a ride in a space ship. But onto the school bus he climbs, and finds that all kinds of kids are there. A couple of kids remark admiringly about his vest and his boots and his hat so that ultimately, instead of the fear of being laughed at, our little character feels special – like DYNOMIKE!

The story is fun to read, the verse is terrific, the many characters at school are entertaining, but on top of that the lessons of being yourself are strong ones for tikes. This is the first in what promises to be a very successful children’s’ book series. Highly Recommended.

A wonderfully inspiring, confidence building book, for children of all ages who are facing new challenges for the first time.

As soon as you open this wonderful children’s book you fall in love with Dynomike. He is young green dinosaur, and he’s scared, and afraid, because today, he must go to school for the first time…

He doesn’t know what to wear, boots, slacks, cap, nothing feels right. His mom knows he is scared, but he must do this thing alone, and so she gives him the best advice she can “Be yourself and be kind,” she knows, if he does this, he will be fine.

He wonders if there is a way out, something else he can do, but no, he must be brave. And so, even though he’s worried, and a little afraid he walks out to the bus, with his mom’s wise words playing in his head.

Bravely he faces his fears, and discovers everything is okay, all the kids are different, unique in every way, and he learns they don’t judge, they just want to be his friend and play.

What a super, confidence building book for children of all ages who are facing new challenges for the first time. After all, everyone can relate to this type of situation when things are scary, and new, and you don’t know what to do!

This children’s book is beautifully illustrated, sensitively written, and its important message shines through.

'Dynomike: Back to School' by Frankie B. Rabbit with illustrations by Lou Francis Isip is picture book about going to school anxieties.

Dynomike is a little alligator who is heading back to school. He can't decide what to wear, and he's afraid he will be teased. He goes through pants and hats and settles on a red cap and a yellow duckie vest. When the bus comes to pick him up, he is anxious, but Dyno-mom pats his head. He learns that school is cool.

It's a very short book. It's told in a rap style rhyme that I really liked and picked up on right away. Apparently the author is a former rapper turned author. The illustrations are a bit on the plain side. There isn't a lot on each page to engage young readers. Dynomike is pretty cute in his boots, vest and hat, but his school bus is just a square and lines. I'd like to see how this series matures, and the message is topnotch.

I received a review copy of this ebook from CreateSpace and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Dynomike: Back to School is the story of a little dinosaur who is nervous about the first day of school. He is nervous he won't fit in and that his clothes will be different. His mother says "be yourself and be kind" and Dynomike does just fine at school and make some friends. The story is told in rap rhyming style. The book is fun, the message is good, and I think it would be helpful for kids with school anxiety. The illustrations could be better; they are very simplistic.

*Received through Netgalley for an honest review*

I wrote the below review, then looked at other reviews. Honestly don't know what I'm missing on this...

I judged a book by its cover and thought that I would like this book. I read the dedication to Billy Madison and had a chuckle, thinking "yep, going to like this". Then I read the story. I actually started this book last night, but my children weren't having any of it and wanted to go to bed. So cut to tonight, book is opened on my tablet, and my three year old says, "I don't like that". "Well, let's finish it anyways", I say.

The story is about a dinosaur going to his first day of school and feeling scared about looking silly. He tries on many different items of hats and pants, his mom the whole time giving encouragement. Story itself isn't bad. I however hated the way it was written. There were a few times I had to pause and reread because something didn't make sense. Not because of large words, but how he was rhyming them. The illustrations look like there were done in MS Paint.

All in all, theme of story is good, the writing and illustrations bad.

Different Is Cool
First in the Dynomike! Series "Dynomike: Back to School" is a great funny rhyming read. Dynomike shares a common anxiety many children face the first day of school. Wanting to fit in is critical to vulnerable youngsters. I feel the author confronted this issue masterfully, through a great character, Dynomike. I thoroughly enjoyed the tongue-twisting smart vocabulary that the author has used throughout this book. This great writing style challenges young minds with intelligent vocabulary. No, "green eggs and ham" found here. With is great artwork, flawless editing, and excellent message this book will be on the must read list for all of my grandchildren. I only wish that Frankie B. Rabbit had written this book when I was facing my own terrifying first day of school. Everyone will agree as they age that being different is cool but when you are young, it's a lot harder to see that being "unique" is okay. The bright, crisp graphics and presentation demand the reader's attention and help convey the message that the author has helped many address.

Dynomike is worried about his first day of school and how difficult it is to express himself. With kindness and a commitment to being himself, he’ll make some quirky new friends.

The illustrations in this book really pop. The hot trend in picture books right now is all about chalk and painterly brush strokes, and I appreciate styles that go against the grain. Don Suratos‘ character designs are reminiscent of late 1990s Nickelodeon, with thick, black outlines and neon colors.

Suratos and Rabbit play with comic book fonts and layouts on some pages and it’s a welcome experimentation. These are the strongest pages in the book. Less successful are pages that separate text from art with semi-opaque blocks. The rhymes are a bit basic and the story might have worked as well or better without being restricted by them.

Kids who have social anxiety will appreciate this positive book about adjusting to new situations and the pictures are wildly entertaining. Recommended as a read-aloud book for new preschoolers and Kindergartens.

Encouraging tale for little children
Little green dinosaur, Dynomike, is getting ready for his first day at school in this sweet little picture book. I loved the illustrations of the poor little soul as he keeps trying on different outfits, trying to find the perfect look for his first day. After trying on various different pants, he moves on to hats:

“He changes his cap again and again
Strap backs to snap backs
Pharell’s hat to blank hats
Mets caps to Jets caps.
I guess I’ll just wear this lousy red hat.”

This verse is illustrated with a picture of Dynomike wearing all the hats one on top of the other in a tall tower! The story is written in rhyme, which is catchy and propels the reader along. This book demands to be read aloud to young children. However, beware that you need to have an I-pad or a Kindle Fire to read this, as it will not work on a normal Kindle, probably due to the picture resolution. It should work on the Kindle app on your pc.

This little picture book’s author rejoices in the name of Frankie B. Rabbit – whether or not it is his real name I don’t know but it adds to the charming quirkiness of this book. The eponymous hero is a dinosaur, called Dynomike, and he is preparing for his first day of school. As a parent myself, I am well aware that all sorts of things occupy a small child’s mind as he faces his first day of schoo,l and this story is very apt as Dynomike tries to find a suitable outfit to wear, which will enable him to fit in on his first day. For instance having tried an array of pants and hats, he says, “Yes! My yellow duck vest! This vest is the best but, I am not sure if it’s cool with the rest.” The illustrations really enhance the book – Dynomike is an endearing and enduring character. He has the potential to star in a whole series of books, helping children to conquer their fears.

Excitingly bright illustrations and a sing-song prose style (that is occasionally a bit tongue-twisty) make this a fun storytime choice for children who are soon to begin kindergarten.

Dynomike is anxious about beginning school -- anxious about his clothes, his personality, what others will think. Kind advice from his mother send his confidence soaring, and his welcoming encounters with his diverse new set of peers energizes him for the school year.

I received this arc from Netgalley for an honest review.
A book about preparing for the first day of school. While I thought that it was cute, especially with the dedication to Billy Madison, I did not love it. The rhyming felt forced and did not flow the way it felt like it should. The illustrations were just okay, seems more like a computer graphic than an artist.

The part of me that taught Kindergarten for four years wanted to like this. Unfortunately, I did not. I can't pinpoint exactly why I found it lacking. Sorry Netgalley.

This is a great book to read to your kids or students when school starts. It teaches the kids that it's okay to be nervous, but just be yourself and be kind and things will go well.
