Worth a Shot

Rate this book
Detective Oliver Worth has everything he needs—the job he always wanted and a knack for picking one-night stands. When a high-born Witch is found murdered on the steps of Nimueh’s Court, Oliver is given the case of the century—because no one else will touch it. Not when it looks like the murder was committed by a Werewolf.

The Treaty between the Courts of Nimueh and Logan has stood for over a hundred years, and peace was hard-won. If a Werewolf is responsible, the murder counts as an act of war and would plunge both kingdoms into chaos. Something Oliver’s Captain is keen to point out.

Treading lightly, Oliver has no choice but to venture alone into Logan’s Court to investigate. The trail of clues leads right to Connor Pierce, a newly minted Alpha of Logan’s kin. Connor is gorgeous and captivating and absolutely a suspect. Determined to do his job and catch the killer, Oliver finds he’s now got more to worry about than an inter-kingdom war. He tries to ignore his growing desire, but Connor keeps drawing him in. Everything about Connor is intoxicating, and Oliver isn’t sure how long he can fight off temptation…

Now there’s not just the peace of two kingdoms on the line—there’s also his heart.

(Worth a Shot is a M/M paranormal mystery romance with Werewolves, Wizards, and explicit sexual content. First in a series but can be read as a stand-alone. No cliffhangers.)

✅ Pace
✅ Smut (M/M)
🆗 Characters
🆗 World-building
🆗❌ Intrigue (simple and way too convenient)
🆗❌ Romance

OMG this book was so short! Things felt rushed honestly, but it was still somehow entertaining (thanks to the smut). The fact that in less than 48 hours and 200 pages the author managed to present the characters and the murder, have them resolve the murder, and also figure out their feelings for each other means that everything has to happen fast and not many details are given.

Oliver is a wizard and a detective living in Nimueh’s court. The world is divided into three courts that hold a fragile peace: Nimueh’s court is home to the witches and wizards, Maeve’s court is where faes live, and Logan’s court is the territory of the werewolves. Wizards and werewolves have had a shaky peace for the last few decades, so when the body of a prominent and rich witch heiress is discovered and the obvious cause of death is a werewolf attack, war threatens Nimueh’s and Logan’s courts. Detective Oliver has to go to Logan’s court to try and figure out who is really responsible for Eloise’s murder, and what better plan than to ally with the most gorgeous and sexy alpha that he’s ever seen (who was also a suspect at first) in order to find the information that he needs?

The two main characters are nice enough and I like them, but I can’t say that I love them yet since we don’t know much about either Oliver or Connor. The book is just too short to give us a real chance to get to know them. They did work well together though and I enjoyed reading about their interactions, but that’s it. They lacked background and depth.

There is romance and sexual tension, although as I previously said, things move fast. The sexual tension part is not there for long before they start to tear each others’ clothes off. The romance also takes up most of the room in the last part of the book. It even becomes more important than the murder investigation, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I jumped into this book expecting a more complex intrigue and romance… something more similar to Out of the Blue. Instead, it’s more a fated love with a strong sexual pull, but not many feelings seem to be involved so far.

The murder and investigation were okay I guess. Because of the short length of the book, I feel that everything was resolved too easily and quickly and there was no real suspense. The murderer was also not a big reveal or surprise, it was an obvious suspect for me from the start. I just feel that the answers kept popping up as soon as Oliver or Connor asked questions or made some basic research, there was no real struggle for them. I didn’t even care that the murderer got caught because I wasn’t made to care about the murder in the first place. The whole murder investigation really feels more like an excuse to bring Oliver and Connor together. At least I can say that the pace is really fast and this is a very quick read.

I don’t think I will continue with this series. I would have definitely enjoyed it much more with more of everything: more complex intrigue, more obstacles, more character development… This is a little funny since my main complaint about Lyra Evan’s last series is that there is too much length and details…

I also have a few questions that I can’t let go of. Mainly, why does Oliver feel the need to stay in the closet?! Why is he afraid of the other officers discovering that he is gay? That was completely unexpected and I still don’t understand why. Also, who broke his heart many years ago? He kept thinking about that one person, but we have absolutely NO details about the relationship, the love interest, or the reason and way it ended.

I enjoyed the mystery and the sex was hot. I really loved Connor and I liked Oliver. It's because I only liked Oliver and didn't fall in love with him, that I gave this book four stars.

Dnf at 11%.

Unreadable sloppy detective.

Plus, the cover seems to show two topless guys in a staring contest (only one of whom has nipples); the loser (or winner?) urinates on the dog (wolf?) first.

In the search for the final two books of my reading challenge, I decided to go through my KU books. So far I'm 0 and 2.

I'm honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this.

I solved the crime in five seconds but it was just a fun read.

Glad I bought the box set.

I must say, that I found this first book really interesting and it made me really curious and ready for the next ones in the series. The MCs weren't perfect, or flawless, and had a strong personality. They felt rage, pain, compassion and jealousy and it all made them seem real. This first story was pretty short, but the world building was good and the mystery nice, also if a bit too easy to understand. Oliver and Connor were hot as hell together, and I loved the fact that Connor wasn't just a werewolf in name, but acted like one. Fated mates? huge bonus.

Now this is what I call a sexy shifter story!

There is a great murder mystery that Oliver, a wizard cop is trying to solve that leads him to the werewolves territory where he meets Conner. My goodness the sexual tension was enough to steam up my Kindle! WooHoo!

I love fantasy, the escapism from the daily grind and usual tensions and this book did it! Oh wow! I couldn't put it down and gave up any pretense of actually doing housework.

Oliver is such an interesting character and following the clues while he tiptoes through the Wolves as a Wizard trying to solve the murder without messing up the treaty between the Wolves, Wizards and Fae that run the town while trying to deny the very strong sexual tension between he and Connor was delicious!

In order to follow the clues he ends up pretending to be Connor's consort so he is protected as Connor is an Alpha kin to Logan, leader of the Wolves. The kissing scene to prove their connection.. (fansself) Whew!

There is a desk that I am jealous of now too!

Seriously, I don't want to give out spoilers but at the big crime climax when they confront the bad guy I cried.. UGH!!

So, I've already grabbed the next in the series and Hubby is going to have to do his own laundry and call take out.

I'm holding off 1 star because I wanted to know more about Connor, the story is from Oliver's point of view so while I know Connor is all Alpha sexy we don't know much about him personally.

Evans creates a world that after a long war was divided into 3 kingdoms, one for witches, one for werewolves and the last one for the fae. We never get to know anything about that war or about the high politics of that world. It's only there to show how fragile the peace treaty is and why nearly everyone makes an effort to keep it. So the world building is kept at a necessary minimum but the few details that are shown made me really want more information.

The mystery is nice enough to start the story and keeps it rolling but it isn't really something to call home about. Eventually the romance dominates every other part of the story and I have to admit I rarely get to read such a tempting slow burn with so much teasing and tension. For a shifter romance reader it's clear right from the beginning that Connor and Oliver are mates and that Connor knows this at first smell but doesn't want to scare off the ignorant but oh so delicious witch cop. It's this playfulness, the teasing, the knowing smirk that helps everytime to get over the story holes. It's this combined with my curiosity about the drafted world that kept me reading into the late night. I enjoyed it and there is no doubt that I will read the next parts.

It would have been a real 4 star read if there was more world building, if Evans would have shown why Oliver believes he has to stay in the closet (his denial about being gay came completely unexpected) and if she would have been able to tone down Connor's wealth and gorgeousness (more subtlety would have made a real difference) and the end although no cliffhanger was HFN at best.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Magic. Shifters. Good writing and solid world building. These are the elements that make up Worth a Shot and made for a really good read. From the beginning, I was engaged in the tale. Told from Oliver’s third person POV, I found myself absorbed in his journey. There isn’t anything particularly deep or angsty here, and there were a few moments where I wanted some additional information. But I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Oliver is a great character right from the beginning. It’s clear he’s searching for something, though he doesn’t know exactly what. He’s good at his job, he’s content in his life. When he’s called to a murder scene, we immediately get the sense that he takes things seriously and will stop at nothing to find out the truth. What I really enjoyed about him was that he felt real and believable. Oliver is a solidly written character that was easy to relate to. He was the perfect narrator. I liked his determination, and he had a real sense of fairness. He wasn’t going to dismiss anything because of his personal feelings, but neither was he going to accept things without facts to back it up. He was really well balanced as a character, and it showed through in all his aspect. It made a nice juxtaposition to the pull he felt to Connor.

There's nothing glaringly wrong with this, it was just bland and didn't keep my attention. My mind drifted as a read and I had to force myself to focus and finish.

We don't get to know the MCs very well. Connor is the typical stoic Alpha, saying more with a look than with words and we know Oliver only marginally better because it's his POV. I didn't feel the chemistry between the guys in anything other than a primal fated mates kind of way. There were no real feelings associated with that pull.

And there was too much scene-setting, too much noting of every change in posture or facial expression. It felt like a story was being told to me, rather than being sucked right in. Everything was just on the surface with no depth of feeling or high stakes involved.

Note: There was a mildly annoying formatting glitch that had the paragraph indents all over the place.

I DNF'd this at 25% because it was becoming kinda clear that this book was going to be more about the fucking, then the fucking mystery. The world was interesting enough, but after sitting thru the scene between Oliver and Connor in the nightclub...I just didn't wanna bother. Oliver was supposedly a grown man and an accomplished detective, and yet he acts like kid who just discovered what his dick is for.

Other people like stories like this, but I am not one of them.

It was okay.

I would have been more into the plot if I hadn't read too many books in the genre and this plot was too predictable for me.

I did enjoy the world and magic but murder mystery was too plain. I guessed the murderer right away. Too many plot holes.

Not the worst but not the best either. Not sure I will continue with the series. This one can be read as stand alone.

This story is rushed. On only 167 pages we have to resolve a murder case, bring two fated mates together and the whole thing plays out over roughly 48 hours.

The things that fall by the wayside because things move so fast are the worldbuilding, the character development, the relationship development and the suspense. So basically everything.
The thing is there is absolutely no reason for things to be this rushed. There is no ticking bomb, there are no lives hanging in the balance and really no stakes at all.

This was yet another frustrating read because everything that does make it to the page is actually quite good. Oliver and Connor have amazing chemistry from the get-go. The author actually avoids the pitfall of beating the reader over the head with the 'fated mates' thing. If you read a few shifter books you'll know the signs but it's not immediately a done deal and I liked that. Unfortunately everything gets resolved waaay too fast and there is simply no time to get invested in the pairing.

After spending 48 hours with them they're just as much strangers to me as they are to each other except that now they have decided to become a couple.

The same goes for the murder case. The dead witch is just a plot device, the tension is barely built up before the killer is caught but I really didn't care about the resolution at all because I wasn't actually made to care.

There are some great elements in the worldbuilding that I hope the sequel picks up on and I like the writing. I really wish this had had about double the page count to really get me involved. This way I mostly got some great smut out of it but was left unimpressed.

Great shifter book, very much enjoyed this! I don't think the book blurb does it justice because I read it in spite of it and the book really surprised me in the best way. Oli is a cop (also a secret bottom which I loved), and he crosses over into the werewolf realm (sort of like a woodsy neighborhood) to investigate a murder when he meets the sexy alpha Connor who he is instantly attracted to though he fights it every step of the way. The writing is very well done lots, of sexy imagery and it has more of an urban feel rather than a fantasy vibe. Loving this very well matched couple and am off to read the next!

I really liked this book I am looking forward to reading more of this series. I really liked the characters they all were so well written everything about them is conveyed so well from the motives of a murderer to the grief of a loved one of the person murdered. I really liked Oliver and Connor most of all for Oliver's insecurities and Connor's everything that is so different from Oliver. I really liked the plot it was a great murder mystery to a well written romance. So I really loved this book I will continue this series soon.

I was actually quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, because it has so many of the elements that I love - murder mystery, magic, werewolves, and the all important 3rd person limited pov - and I've been burned before when stumbling upon something that I hope will hit all of my buttons. But this one was really good! The world was interesting to learn about, the characters were intelligent and interesting, and I didn't even care that the relationship jumped so quickly into the "I want you forever" part, because the UST was written so brilliantly that I was practically screaming for these two to get it on about 30 seconds into their first interaction.

The only thing that knocked a star off for me was the plot. While it was good, I felt that the "twist" was less of a twist and more of a natural progression, and once the killer was revealed it took a little too long to be resolved. I wanted a bit more intrigue, especially with all the talk of political ramifications, but it all fell into place a little too easily. It wasn't enough for me to stop enjoying the book, and I'll definitely be reading the second in the series!

I thought this was a really interesting read.

Engaging plot, likable MCs, and chemistry that was seriously off the charts. The whole thing was super hot, and generally fun and engaging. I could easily see this becoming a series.

I will say that I thought the world was a little confusing--it took me awhile to realize that there weren't regular humans at all, and that this wasn't taking place on Earth, or at least not as we know it. Could have used some fleshing out, but it wasn't too hard to follow along.

This had great sexual tension. If it had been a bit longer with more development it might be a heavy contender for me for my favorites shelf. It got an extra star for the tension between the characters. I felt like I had a good feel for the world and it's characteristics and I really liked the MC's.

Tristan and Tori are great together. Living opposite lives and brought together by spilled coffee. Tristan runs an illegal cage fighting ring out of his bar. He doesn’t believe he’s a good man, but his life changes the day when this super bubbly girl spills coffee over him and life seems to just keep throwing them together. Tori can’t help being drawn to Tristan despite their different backgrounds and lifestyles. Eventually, she ends up needing to reconcile who Tristan is as a person with how he leads his life. His skirting the law is about to catch up with him though. Someone is after Tristan and is not above using Tori to get him. Tristan have to pick which is more important.

Worth a Shot was great! Definitely a slightly different feel to it, but nothing I could really put my finger one. It’s can be read as a standalone, but there are related characters who will be in the next book. There were some romcom elements, but also romantic suspense. It’s a slow burn. The flow of the book seemed a little off, but certainly nothing too bad. The characters are just wonderful! Tori is fantastic. She’s super happy and funny and has a whole lot of attitude. Tristan was great. When he went all in with Tori, he was all in, no matter how long it took. The plot was interesting and there were enough twists and turns to keep me hooked to the end. Overall, a great read! I can’t wait to see where Ms. Haris takes the story.

I really liked that this book was laid out so that the different paranormals had their own land. I liked that the boundaries could be crossed but were guarded. You always read about territories in books, but this really made the separation stand out.

I also liked that the storyline revolved around a mystery that needed to be solved. I somewhat guessed who the murderer was, but there was a lot to how the crime was committed that had me baffled. That made up for my hunch on who did it being accurate.

Overall, I definitely liked how this series started out. It was a unique concept for what is usually given in a book that contains paranormal beings.

This series is a great find combining a classic murder mystery, magical realms & being, and love story. Each book is a new mystery with the same characters and even though I saw quite a few things coming before the big reveal there was still a surprise in there every so often. Totally worth the read.

Good solid mystery crime tale, although a bit more detail in the backstory at the start would be useful to ground the reader in the world. Has a HFN so you'd need to keep reading for complete closure, but has a good enough ending so you don't feel cheated from a conclusion.
