Despite her growing feelings for her saviour, Commander Hugo Casimir, he remains a paradox – not only is he a heartless killer, he is owned by the cruel immortal fae queen; a queen who will murder her own people for magic.

As Diamond’s circumstances become ever more perilous she is drawn deeper into Hugo’s world and discovers the lengths to which he will go to save what he holds dear. Will Hugo become her friend, her protector, or – an enemy not worthy of her trust?

So what is A Bond of Venom And Magic?

Not your pretty dresses and big parties YA fantasy, where one Prince smirks as the other smolders and both hope to dance with the "clumsy and average-looking" heroine who takes their breath away. And most definitely not your Mary-Sue's lost in the wild again with beautiful saviors come to fight over her affections. Nope. Nope. Nope. (Sorry if you like that sort of thing, I understand completely - we all enjoy our favorite snack foods, right?)

Well, if you want that, don't read this. BUT, if you want a blast of cold air in your face, or a mouthful of spicy, salty food, or a walk in the woods where you can feel the earth come alive around you, then you have to read this mature YA fantasy.

description

A gusty, gritty and very fun fae-filled adventure, A Bond of Venom And Magic is fraught with rich and veiny politics and magical creatures (so very few of them kind) and soooooooo much action you'd better be careful what you're eating (if you're an eat as you read reader) because you might find most of it in your lap from the shock and intensity and realism. Battling dragons, dust devils, imps and the elements are just the half of it as Karen Tomlinson weaves the illegal danger of falling in love into her magical debut, and couple that with, yes, magic itself, as the title states, and the near Romeo and Juliet bond forged between unforgettable Hugo and Diamond.

description

Many many thanks to Karen Tomlinson who gave me this ARC, what an incendiary tale she has crafted in her debut. If you like fae, you just might've found your bae.

Diamond is a half blood fae who suddenly finds out shes being hunted by the Wraith Lord. Her only chance at avoiding the beasts hunting her is making it to a city where half bloods like her have no rights. I thought it was smart how the author started the story with Diamonds fathers perspective because it gave us a chance to get closer to him before the Seeker attack. It helped me be more invested in his fate. The different creepy creatures were fascinating but the fight scenes didnt feel as intense as I would have liked. The concept for the brutal world was interesting but the traveling got boring.

The reading pace was a lot slower than I expected but I liked the short chapters. I felt like a lot of traveling scenes were dragged out but with so many 5 Star reviews its probably just my reading mood. I did find it picked up after they got to the city but it took them half the book to get there. Somethings were repeated or unnecessary which slowed down the pace. One example was the heat radiating off Hugo being repeated a few times in as many paragraphs. The first chapters started off with such a good bang that it was a little disapointing when it slowed down.

I wasnt sure how I felt about the main character appearing so weak. On the one hand I appreciated the representation of panic attacks but I still didnt like seeing her so helpless. She does have a defiant side that she develops more into through out the book but she doesnt act on it enough. The few times that she did show strength were more inspiring because of having to overcome her panic attacks. I dont typically enjoy the damsel in distress trope. However her insecurities and panic attacks were realistic since not everyone has had combat training. It was a little frustrating how clueless she was about peoples feelings for her and her lack of initative drove me crazy.

I liked that Hugo wasnt your usual pretty boy with his scars and little imperfections. At one point I felt like there was a confusing passage about the color of his wings but the first description was accurate. They're clearly blue like on the cover. I dont usually enjoy male characters who are controlling so I wasnt Hugos biggest fan but getting his perspective definitely helped me understand why he acted the way he did. I didnt like that he didnt try to find a healer somewhere other than the palace. That was a pretty stupid move in my opinion. I didnt like how he treated Diamond sometimes, even if it was to protect her. I just wish he would have stood up to the Queen for her.

I think I like the Prince more than Hugo because he isnt as dominating and controlling. I wish we would have gotten to read the Prince perspective. The other female character Rose was pretty much used as a plot device. I wish we would have seen more of her friendship with Diamond. Zane and Toms interactions were one of my favorite parts but we barely see them together. I was really disapointed that they were forgotten after they get to the city. I didnt really care about her Uncle the General and wasnt too surprised by the turn of events. The evil queen is much like other evil queens: beautiful, all powerful and cruel.

DNF at 29% because I faced two main problems with this book: it reads with all the weaknesses of a debut book from a debut author and the blurb marketing was garbage.

This book has a lot of four and five star reviews...which tend to correlate with folks who personally received ARCs, I noticed. Question, then: in general and not necessarily aimed at this book alone, why do so many ARC reviews inflate the merit of average books? Are we scared to hurt the authors' feelings by pointing out the flaws?

THE GOOD
The first four chapters were fantastic. The immediate drop in the middle of the action captivated me by the second page. What a rush.

THE BAD
1) "For fans of mature young adult fantasy..." What exactly made this "mature young adult"? With characters in their teen years, adolescent emotional capabilities and juvenile character dialogue, the only possible excuse I could think of to even attempt to classify this as mature young adult fantasy was the word "shit" and two mentions of the word "prick."

2) "For fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo..." oh, hells to the no. This book didn't come anywhere near the complexity of world building, character and plot exposition, and larger picture themes of Maas and Bardugo.

3) Characters were weak and forgettable. I got excited at first because Diamond was putting up a heck of a spunky fight against the Seekers in the beginning...but then she does a lot of weeping, rubbing her face against Hugo's chest, getting snared by Freddy (really? We're in a "mature young adult" high fantasy and you're gonna name the obligatory rapist "Freddy"?), tripping over twigs, and getting kidnapped by dragons...because she's speshull and she's wanted for something speshull.

Jack the Prince...was blink-or-you'll-miss it. His introduction to the story happens so fast and before we know it, he's knocked out by a punch to the jaw (weak...) and then wakes up for an act of manly heroism...only to get knocked out again by a knife to the ribs. All I keep thinking about was in the intro to his character, he was trying to rescue a pet snow leopard and almost got eaten by a dragon as a result. Which is ridiculous and completely unmanly. Listen, I'm a cat person myself but when you're the sole heir to the throne and Smaug is coming at you with the fires of Mordor, kick Garfield to the curb and GTFO. (By the way...whatever happened to the cat?)

Hugo. All we know about him is he was badass in the beginning four chapters but then became nineteen and secretly sensitive to twue lurve. And turned on by Diamond's scented hair and warm body and magic bond.

4) World building. Exposition. Where are you? What are seekers, who is the Big Bad, why is there a werewolf running around, and is Diamond a wizard and a thumpin' good one, too? Who knows, because by a third of the way in it doesn't look like we're going to set up a complex world at all. Maas would never let that fly, so you know.

5) Tropes up the wazoo. Surly warrior is secretly a softy for the heroine. The heroine is constantly a target for damsel in distress scenarios whether it be from Seekers/zombies, dragons, wannabe rapists named Freddy (Freddy? Really?), or sleep deprivation. Special powers and snowflake syndrome 10x.

THE VERDICT
Despite it all, I was strangely entertained by this book. I'd probably continue to be entertained the more I read it, but it's far from a well-written fantasy book (much less mature fantasy alongside the lines of Maas or Bardugo) and there's bound to be a better written book with just as much entertainment out there.

An action packed fantasy adventure with phenomenal world building.

“You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, tonight or any night, queen or no queen.”

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of Karen Tomlinson’s A Bond of Venom and Magic, which releases this October.

Lately I have not had much luck with indie books, but you can tell that Karen Tomlinson has put in the work to make A Bond of Venom and Magic one of the most well-polished indie novels I have read since Elise Kova’s Air Awakens series. Tomlinson is a true wordsmith, and has created an enthralling world that I was sucked into from the first chapter.

The characters in ABOVAM are great as well. Diamond (while occasionally frustrating as hell… but for a good reason), was completely refreshing as a main character.

She’s not confident.

She’s not snarky and witty.

She’s a young, terrified halfblood fae with a gentle heart who is prone to panic attacks, who has been ripped from the quiet life she has always known. As much as I like swagger and snark in my MC’s, it was good to read something different for a change. Diamond is a character that is super relatable on many levels, and her character development was a treat to follow through the ABOVAM.

Hugo, however, really frustrated me. And I understand why he had to make the decisions he made, but gods above, I really want to just smack him. I wish Diamond could just say “So long sucker!” And high tail it out of Valentia and away from the crazy fae Queen! But she can’t, for reasons, so I will leave that be for now.

The world of Avalonia that Tomlinson has created is amazing. Her world building is so vibrant and there are so many layers of it that I was just completely in love. I am a sucker for good world building, and I’m about ready to just pack my bags and start exploring - though to be honest the seekers and dragons/guardians are a bit terrifying. So maybe I’ll just stay home.

This book is incredibly fast paced, and one of my only complaints is that at times it was too fast paced for me. There was so much action that I occasionally found myself just wishing that things could be a bit calmer for Diamond and her friends, even for a short amount of time. I think perhaps slowing it down a bit could have allowed me to get to know some characters better, like Tom and Jack. I really wanted to get to know Jack better *winks*.

To wrap this up, if you like high fantasy novels, action packed adventure, and bomb-ass world building, then be sure to pick up A Bond of Venom and Magic when it releases on October 14th! Or pre-order it from one of the links on its goodreads page!

***** 5 Cranky Stars *****

When I turned the last page, I was disappointed that the book had ended. This was a brilliant read and I think that the author has set a very high bar for herself and her follow up novels.

This is the story of Diamond, the beautiful fae and human mixed blood of the war torn Avalonia.

Ruled by the immortal and evil fae queen, mixed bloods are reviled and have no rights in Avalonia by decree of the queen.

However the Lord of the Wraiths wants Diamond dead and he wants the pendant that she inherited from her mother and sends his vicious Seeker beasts after her to accomplish this task. They kill her father who was a fae warrior.

Commander Hugo Cassimer of the queen's elite guard and a platoon of warriors come to her rescue and and an amazing adventure unfurls. A forbidden love story, a traitor, a dragon, a goddess and a myriad of nasties all contribute to an amazing story.

This is NOT at all a pretty tale and if you are expecting an airy fairy cute story, you would be mistaken, this is a gritty no holds barred account and I can barely wait for the second portion.

I happily award this book 5 stars.

Book Name: A Bond of Venom and Magic.
Author: Karen Tomlinson
Series: The Goddess and The Guardians.
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy.
ISBN: 9781311086228

Thanks to the author of this marvelous book for providing an ARC for me. This in no way influences my thoughts on it.

A Bond of Venom and Magic is one of the best YA Fantasy debuts I have read, like ever. It's bewitching, I fell in love with all the characters from the very beginning. It is very easy to relate with the characters and understand them. For a first book, this is a very impressive masterpiece.

Things I loved about A Bond of Venom and Magic :
-The Magic(Obviously). I was very very impressed by the portrayal of magic in this book, the words flow in a way that not only arrests your attention but is also very vivid. It feeds your imagination and this already makes this a 5 star book to me.
-Originality. I have to give Karen Tomlinson a loud kudos for her awesome ideas that make up ABOVAM. This book stands out, it is literally incomparable to others in its genre. Diamond's story is one interesting story that I can verify is different from anything else you might have read in a better way.
-World. The world in ABOVAM is fascinating, really. That is the best word to describe it, Rhodenia, Avalonia and simply everywhere else in the book is just fascinating.
-Adventures. Diamond is a girl whose life never ceases to amuse me. From running from flesh eating monsters, being stuck in the forest with a handsome Prince, being attacked by a fierce dragon to being a magical vessel that could be used to resurrect an evil god, I am never short of behind entertained. Adventure fans would love ABOVAM immensely.
-A Fierce Heroine. I absolutely adored Diamond. She is not just strong but witty. Admittedly, there are times she is not at her best (In the presence of the Fae Queen) but she is badass when it matters. I am also glad she did not let the scorn aimed at half bloods (Half Fae and Half Human) destroy her spirit. Karen Tomlinson has created a heroine that is lovable and likeable despite her flaws. Diamond's most enviable trait is not letting men walk over her albeit her weird relationship with Hugo.
-The Characters. Hugo is a main character that I can gladly admit is not perfect, but that is precisely what I love about him. He is not always the white knight in shining armour but he is really protective of Diamond. His feeling for her are quite strong and very obvious to anyone who used to know him. He has many dark secrets and power but that does not hide the fact that underneath it all, there is a good, strong, loyal and lovable man. While he makes some epically stupid mistakes, you will still be rooting for him because you just can't help it.
Prince Jack Oden is simply a hero. He is all about protecting Diamond and caring for her and that makes him one of my favorite characters. He is not only strong and good but when he wants something he goes after it (i.e Diamond). He was always there for her till the end of ABOVAM and that makes him a notable character. His moments with Diamond in the forest when they were stuck for weeks were also cute.
The Fae Queen of Avalonia. Yes she is sort of the villain but she deserves a mention because she is a very very good villain. Not only is she a formidable opponent, she isn't as stupid as most villain in YA books these days. Her magic is quite strong and she has a twisted evil mind to back it up. She may not be the main villain but she is definitely not to be underestimated.
-The Fae. The version of Fae in this series is quite different from what is usually seen. I am pleased to see that new ideas are still surfacing.
-Monsters. YAY!!! Monsters!! Those who have read my previous reviews know how much I love monsters in a book. The uglier, fiercer and bigger they are the better. ABOVAM is full of monsters. Flesh eating carnivores called Seekers, Wolfmen, Shape Shifters, Dust Devils, Dragons and Wraiths. I just can't help but be insanely obsessed with this book.
-Plot. The storyline is fantastic and never bores me. All through the book is a thrilling ride that leaves one wanting more.
-Finally, The ROMANCE!!. Watching (Yup it's like a movie to me) Hugo and Diamond fall in love with each other is something I wouldn't want to miss for anything. Despite the Nexus bond, it is glaringly clear that they have developed strong feelings for each other. This is not a bubblegum love but an all consuming love that leaves everyone else in the dust and the two characters in their own little world. It was a blast to see it happen.

What I didn't like:
- I wish Diamond used her magic more or at least controlled it to a certain extent but I understand that is to come in later books in the series.
-The fact that I can't get book 2 right now. I need it like AIR!!!!.

My Summary of A Bond of Venom and Magic.
Diamond Gillon is half fae and half human in a world where half bloods are regarded with disgust and loathing. She is also a schoolteacher who wants more in life. Her whole life changes when she and her father Arades are attacked by monsters working for the Wraith Lord Ragor. This leads to her father dying and her being rescued by a group of Fae warriors led by a member of the Queens guard Hugo Casimir. The entourage has to protect her and take her to the city Valentia where she will be relatively safe from the Wraith Lord because of the shield that protects the island city. During the journey, she learns many life changing things like the fact that she has more wild magic than anyone has seen in many years and the reason why the Wraith Lord is hunting her. She also grows feelings for her reluctantl savior, Hugo. Things between them gets even more complicated when they form a magical bond.
Diamond saves the life of Prince Jack Oden of Rhodania. After being stuck together alone in the forest for a few weeks, Jack begins to have feelings for her. In a world where people with magic are hunted down and killed by the mighty Fae Queen and her warriors, Diamond not only has more magic than the queen, she also falls in love with the queens favorite warrior.
Get this book to find out how Diamond survives this trials and hurdles to become the powerful woman and magician she is meant to be.

A Bond of Venom and Magic is one book I can definitely buy a thousand times. Anyone who is a fan of YA Fantasies had to geth this book, it is a must have.

P.S: Isn't that cover simply divine?? I mean who can resist that.

Note: I received an ARC copy of this book from the author. This in no way influences my opinion.

Can I just say… WOW!!!! I was expecting this book to be good, but this book exceeded expectations and was AMAZING!! Like… I fangirled on Goodreads, I sat and gaped when the book was finished, and I have already requested an ARC of the second book from Karen when the become available. *Breathes* I’m getting ahead of myself… clearly! I will try and make this review as coherent as possible, and I won’t be giving anything away… but there may also be a lot of fingerling going on! Before I continue though, can we just take a moment to admire the cover? I want to frame it and put it on my wall! Anyway…

This book gripped me from the very first pages. Right from the very beginning, this book is swathed in action and it does not let up until the very end. As a reader, I was sat on the edge of my seat and I didn’t feel like I could sit back and relax, because there was no quiet moment with this book!! As soon as one problem was gone and done with, another raised straight afterward! I was left reeling and spinning and feeling so many feels that I don’t even know where to begin with them! Even now, I could just sit and gape for a while because this book is one hell of a ride! It was a seriously strong start to the series and I really need the second book… I have a book hangover!

Diamond is really naive… but in a really weird way, you want to help her rather than slap her because she just needs it! Normally I hate characters like this, but she bursts through with moments of strength and stubbornness and she stays true to herself throughout, even though she can be really naive at times. She adapted throughout the book and she changed to fit her situation and she overcame her problems in the best way she could – but her naivety got in her way a lot!! I just wanted to adopt her and hide her and never let her go again!

Hugo!! This guy… Where do I even begin. There were times where I wanted to slap him, times when I wanted to hug him and never let him go. This guy brought out a rollercoaster of emotions in me all on his own and I loved it! Seriously though, You have to decide what you want. You can’t have everything, brother! Doesn’t work in our world and it won’t work in yours. Especially because of the evil queen!! Like, how could you even serve her??? Seriously, what is your malfunction, HUGO?!?!? This character really seriously needs to do some thinking about what he wants, because all he is causing is trouble for everyone around him!

I don’t want to say too much, but I think it was really clever how the author managed to fit the title itself into the book so that it made sense! I was kind of concerned at the beginning how the title would fit into the book but now I am just sat here and I love it! I would take either bond with Hugo any day!! *dreamy eyes!* *Ahem* anyway…

That ending!! How could you do this to me, Karen? How could you do this to any one of your readers?!? Especially because I have to wait a lifetime (Ok, beginning of next year) for the next book!! What do you expect me to do in this time?!? How do you expect me to get over that ending… because I won’t and I can’t and I just… ugh! Like I said, major book hangover. The ending was absolutely amazing and I don’t even know where to begin getting over it. Maybe I just won’t.

This book is a beautiful specimen of a book. Who wants a physical copy when it comes out? ME! Who is going to sit and stroke it for hours when they get a physical copy? ME! Who is going to sleep with it next to them? Yup, you guessed it, yours truly! This book left me reeling with everything that happened, all of the action and the amount of information we were given, but never felt like an info dump!! I am so stoked for the second book (and for when I get my hands on a physical copy of this book) that I may just need to build a time machine to get my hands on the next book. Why not??

I rated this book a glorious 5/5 stars… but it really deserves 100/5 – but Goodreads won’t let me!

A Bond of Magic and Venom follows the heroine, Diamond, as she comes into her newly found power and tries to save her world from dark evil.

Everything seemed to happen to conveniently in this book. All of her life she has never had powers, but all of a sudden she’s able to use those powers perfectly without any practice and she’s unfazed? Hmm sounds a bit like lazy plot convenience to me.

In all honesty, the plot of this book wasn’t bad and I found it occasionally interesting, however there was just too much plot convenience and the author would throw things in that didn’t make that much sense to make the book easier to write, but that led to the book being boring at points. I also felt like this book used so many common tropes in YA, the heroine who is very special and who’s power has never been seen before, dark and brooding protector and many many more. There is nothing wrong with using tropes because of course it is hard to write something 100% unique, but the way these tropes were used seemed a bit overdone and tiring.

The writing style was very… strange, I don’t know how to describe it. I found the way she worded these things to be very cringey and I found myself actually having to pull back, because it would get really cheesy at points. There was awkward wording at every corner, and it was weird because there was some modern terminology used however this book took place in a not so modern world.

The author failed to give a good explanation to what exactly were Diamond’s powers and also Diamond was always able to use her power and understand it, even though she had never used it before. It was quite unrealistic.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the relationship or semi-love triangle in this book. I just hate it when off the get go you can tell who the love interest is and exactly how it is going to go because it is usually the first love interest the heroine lays her on. Not only that, but the entire time it was just him protecting her and him helping her live, Diamond was pretty useless and didn’t do much except for almost die and she always ended up being a damsel in distress. Nothing wrong with that, but when I picked up this book I was expecting a strong female heroine, and not a story about a woman who depends on a man for survival. Her love interest is very overprotective and jealous and some people may find it attractive, but I sometimes deem it to be abusive and old school, but as I said to each their own.

There were also multiple grammatical errors scattered throughout the book.
Really sorry for the in-depth and a bit harsh review. I like to be completely honest, and I don’t mean to offend or hurt anyone. The act of writing a book is impressive enough and this review doesn’t take away from that.

I received this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

This book was too melodramatic.

It started with a bang and then just spiraled out of control. Diamond is half-human, half-fae girl, something considered taboo in the fae kingdom. She is attacked by something called "Seekers" and she narrowly escapes while her dad is killed. Hugo, a commander for the queen, was among the people that came to her rescue. This is where everything went downhill.

Magic use in the land is forbidden and anyone who does it is thrown into the dungeon and killed by the queen. Hugo sees Diamond and he is drawn to her, he calls it a "Nexus" bond, but as you would expect in any YA fantasy, Hugo doesn't want to be drawn to her. That's what this book is about, him fighting it. One minute he's growling at any guy that goes near her and the next minute he ignores her like he can't stand the sight of her. I might be exaggerating a little bit but it felt like that's what happened.

Diamond on the other hand was also exhausting. She started off with the potential to be a badass but a few pages after the introduction of Hugo she's doing airhead shit. She's sniffing him, she's eyeing him, the heat radiating around him is mesmerizing. It's like she had a lobotomy or something. One minute she trusts him the next she's wondering if he's in love with the queen and stringing her alone. Yes, Hugo did not help matters with his 'hot and cold' attitude but damn, if you think you can't trust him then don't, no body wants to read about you going back and forth. Ugh.

Besides all that, this book was a huge info-dump. So many things are mentioned that I have no idea why they were mentioned or what the significance is. Some characters are introduced and then they vanish for pages upon pages just to reappear again like they never left.

Truth is, if this book was among the first YA fantasy I read I probably would have liked it but I am slowly considering myself an expert in these things so no, I can't say I enjoyed this one at all. With all the glowing reviews, this is a "me" thing.

Thanks, Jessy, for the rec :x

I voluntarily reviewed a copy from the "Rachel E. Carter" YA Book Club on Goodreads

The cover and the summary blob of the book was what got me hooked to it. I was able to get the ARC and I'm grateful for that. This book was entertaining overall. However, it did have some issues and the story, to me, was a bit confusing. Or maybe, the way it was written. It took me a while to see things clearly. I have tons of questions. The pacing isn't super fast but, it is not slow either...somewhere in-between, I'd say. The book has two POV. There were some chapters with Hugo's POV but, mostly Diamond.

The story begins with Diamond, who is a half breed (half fae and half human), despised by most cuz of what she is. She's living in a small town with her father and an uncle. One day her town is attacked by these seekers who are vicious beasts - shape shifters - who work for the Evil Wraith Lord Ragor. They are hunting for her and she is clueless as to why as she's a nobody. Her life changes forever with that attack on her. She's saved by the Royal Elite guards (Queen's personal fae warriors) and again she's wondering why? As they don't just help anybody.

I felt the story had a good premise -- Evil Queen, Evil Wraith Lord Ragor who wants to take over the world...what else? Gods and Goddesses (I'm still confused about that), guardians aka dragons. And, the perils involved in saving the world. However, the story sort of got backstage between the growing attraction (no insta-love Thank God) and hot/cold behavior between the main protagonists - Hugo and Diamond.

The story also somewhat reminded me of Erawan and Maeve from ToG series. I couldn't help but draw parallels between it. Evil Queen, Elite personal guards (play toy too), she a control freak who wants to be all almighty...working in secret to take all power. Despite that, I still definitely enjoyed reading it.

Diamond, going through a lot during her journey for survival turned out to be a magic wielder unbeknownst to her. One day she's a nobody and the next she has this great power she had no idea she possessed & is hunted by guardians, wanted by wraith lord - for unknown reasons & probably will get killed by the queen for possessing magic . Her power is so great as it has not been seen since the Goddesses themselves. She has no idea how to use it or where she got it from. However, she can wield some scary power when her emotions are high and she feels threatened. As a character, for now, she's weak, naïve, pretty, an ordinary girl, in a way clingy, does have a feisty spirit, lived a sheltered life and who has potential as the series goes on. I want to see her grow as the series progresses and become less dependent on Hugo or anyone else. By the time the book ended she's been thrown into a somewhat impossible situation and I want her to make the best of it to fight for herself and what is right.

Hugo, the commander and queen's personal guard & play toy to be. He's scary, a full blooded fae warrior, has magic although we don't know what kind as he keeps a tight lid on it. Well, he's been hot and cold to Diamond from the beginning. I understand being under the queen's thumb does not give him many choices. However, I want his character to grow as well. I want to understand how he ended up being where he is. I want to know if he truly desires to break free from the queen and I want him to figure out a way to be free. I want to understand his magic as he does have strong magic inside him. We just don't know what? Is it a blood oath he has sworn to the queen? What is holding him back???

Jack, the mortal prince, he seemed nice and turned out to be a good friend to Diamond. He's a friend to Hugo too. However, we didn't get to see a whole lot of Jack. Half the book he was sick and the rest he was just not there. Is he scheming something? Why is he working with the Bitch queen?

Nexus/Bond, there is a bond between Hugo and Diamond. She's his nexus. We've been told about it. But, it is not clear what Nexus means? It seems their magic is complementary to each other. It seems like a big thing. Not to mention, it makes Hugo act like Diamond is his mate. Is she? Like fae have one true mate? Hugo was able to mark Diamond with his venom without her knowing (the circumstance was dire) which led to some other events in the story. Also, it seems Diamond is a magnet for all fae warrior males. What is that about?

Mystery benefactor and group - There was a certain group that is supposed to be on Diamond's side. They kidnap her trying to explain to her. Like that ever works! We don't know much about them however, they want to help her. Or do they? This was sort of introduced and then just left alone.

Guardians, are the dragons who protected many, many years ago. However, there's one guardian who is hell bent on hunting Diamond. I have my theories as to why he went after Diamond.

Evil Queen, reminded me somewhat of Maeve from ToG. Well, she has her own agenda. she's a hypocrite too. As she herself has magic but, despises and kills anyone else from being a magic wielder in her kingdom. She is diabolical, evil, mean, spiteful, gorgeous, controlling, rules with an iron fist biatch. There!

The stage for book 2 is already set. Diamond has a lot of growing up to do and harden her resolve. She has a lot to learn and let's hope she does just that and kicks some arse. I'm definitely going to follow up with the series as it did have me intrigued. We'll be seeing a lot of pow wow between Hugo and Diamond.

I received an ARC of A Bond of Venom and Magic in exchange for an honest review.

A Bond of Venom and Magic, book one in the Goddess and the Guardians series, is a strong start to what could be a great series. The plot follows a young halfbreed (half human, half fae), Diamond Gillon, who lives in the peaceful town of Berriesford with her fae father. Diamond's existence has been rough due to her mixed blood, but, when compared to other halfbreeds, she leads a fairly decent life. That life is turned upside-down when Berriesford is attacked by flesh-eating creatures, called Seekers. These monsters work for the Wraith Lord, Ragor, who is raging war against the kingdom of Avalonia. In the attack, Diamond is saved by a group of warrior fae, who force her to leave her hometown. One of her saviours is Hugo Casimir, a Queen's Guard who was tracking down the Seekers that attacked her town. He is cold and blunt in his treatment towards Diamond, but there is an undeniable attraction that both of them feel towards the other.

Diamond's "uncle" (not blood-related, but is her family), General Amsal Edo, wants to take Diamond to Valentia, the capital city of Avalonia and home of the infamously cruel Fae Queen, who is over a thousand years old. Accompanied by the warriors that saved them from Berriesford, they make their way toward Valentia. The journey is filled with peril and a dangerous situation awakens magic within Diamond. Her magic is unlike anything the other fae have seen. She holds an extremely rare type of magic that could rival that of the Fae Queen, herself. This new power puts Diamond in even greater danger, as magic users are often brutally murdered by the Fae Queen. As a Queen's Guard, Hugo has no other choice, but to bring Diamond to the Fae Queen for judgement. In Valentia, Diamond learns the true extent of prejudice against halfbreeds and the gravity of what it means to fall for a Queen's Guard, who can only ever love the Queen they have devoted their life to.

The premise of A Bond of Venom and Magic is an interesting one that Karen Tomlinson delivers with grace. The pacing is fairly steady, with lots of action throughout the novel.

While there is plenty of action, the true climax of the story is strictly an emotionally driven one via the relationship between Hugo and Diamond. While I found myself hoping they would admit their feelings for one another, I couldn't help, but feel that Hugo's character impeded Diamond's character growth. Her strongest moments were when Hugo was absent. At one point, Diamond becomes separated from the fae warriors and the life of Prince Jack Oden is in her hands. She demonstrates a great deal of strength, taking care of the human prince while trying to survive being lost in the forest. The moment Hugo returns, Diamond becomes completely dependant on him and constantly needs him to protect her while she weeps/is frozen in fear. There are moments where Diamond is defiant and more confident in herself, but they were few, which was slightly disappointing. There is a lot of potential for Diamond's character, however, and I am hoping she will develop into a stronger character in book two. The weakness of her character in the first book is fairly understandable since she has lived her entire life in a sheltered town where her biggest concern were bullies. Things like Seekers, dragons and wars are completely beyond her and she reacted in a pretty realistic way. Being thrust into such a nightmarish ordeal is enough to break anyone and seeking comfort in Hugo is a fair enough reaction.

The relationship between Diamond and Hugo grew a little tiresome towards the end, though, because of Diamond's wishy-washy feelings towards the Queen's Guard. In one sentence she can go from glaring at him in absolute hatred to expressing how much she wants to be with him. (Potential Spoilers for the end of book 1)

The world and mythos that Karen Tomlinson has created in A Bond of Venom and Magic is extremely rich and one of the greatest parts of this debut of The Goddess and the Guardians series. There are many aspects to this world that we only get a glimpse at in A Bond of Venom and Magic and I am excited to read the next books in this series to learn more about the magic and history. With Diamond's magic a mystery to the characters as much as it is to us readers, it will be exciting to see just how strong her powers will be. Hugo's magic will be equally as interesting to learn more about, as there is clearly much more going on with his character than we know.

The secondary characters in A Bond of Venom and Magic are all great additions to the cast and it would be great to see them return to in the next book for more development-- especially Prince Jack, Tom (Diamond's best friend from Berriesford) and Zane (the arrogant fae who expresses great interest in Tom).

Overall, I greatly enjoyed A Bond of Venom and Magic. It is a great start for the teen/new adult fantasy series and I eagerly await book two.

Book 1 in the Goddess and the Guardian series opens with explosive action that glues you to the page . . . and then keeps you turning page after page after page as a rich and beautiful fantasy world opens up before your eyes. I was totally hooked and am so glad to have discovered Karen Tomlinson’s work!

The best part about this book was the characters, particularly the two leads. Diamond, the heroine, is an unusual leading lady for this genre. She doesn’t start out as powerful and confident as you normally see. She suffers from panic-attacks and is a bit naïve at times. But these struggles only serve to make her journey of growth and strength all the more compelling. I really loved walking in her shoes as she discovers the truth of her heritage and struggles to figure out who to trust in a dangerous world.

Hugo, the hero, was a total heartthrob. He spends much of the story trying to fight his attraction to Diamond, and you know I totally live for angst like that!!! :) The chemistry between them was great and added much to my enjoyment of the tale being told.

Together they face the wrath of the Wraith Lord, who seeks unleash darkness and chaos upon the realms. Monsters and magic abound, and some of the action sequences were truly terrifying. I enjoyed every moment and can’t wait to see what happens next!

3.5 Stars (I've decided to split the difference)

Right, so I've had a few days to think about it, and I've come to conclusion that overall, I really enjoyed A Bond of Venom and Magic, but I did have a few issues, which I'll be discussing below. This review will be another of my what I liked/what I didn't like.

Alright, what I liked:

The world was very interesting, and there are heaps, yes, HEAPS of fight scenes/dramatic moments. This plot is certainly emotionally driven, and whilst I had some problems with the plot speed, A Bond of Venom and Magic is a fun, fantasy read. I had a great time reading it.

The characters were fascinating, although to be really honest, only the two leads - Diamond and Hugo - really get fully fleshed out and explored. Some of the secondary characters begin to be explored (like Jack), but I was disappointed that with some of the characters, like the best friend Thomas, we actually don't get to learn much at all. This best friend relationship I felt was really important, and whilst we were told they were close and important to each other, but I never actually saw that depicted within the relationship. I really hope in the next book that Thomas gets some more page time, as I really wanted to warm to more of the secondary characters, but I just didn't feel the connection when they were only in a handful of scenes.

Finally, the real strength of A Bond of Venom and Magic is the romance. The mating bond is fascinating and the best part of this book. I really enjoyed reading about how the relationship between Diamond and Hugo formed, developed and hit wall after wall. Their characters are complex, and what happens to them and between them was really intriguing and their reactions were genuine. The conflict and contradictions of their relationship will be riveting to read as it develops in the next few books.

What I didn't like:

As I mentioned above, I did feel that apart from the two main characters, we don't actually get to know any of the other characters at all. Diamond is an interesting character, and Hugo is suitably brooding and aloof, but in the long run, I really hope Diamond makes Hugo work for her affection, after the ending in this book.

Another point that annoyed me was that a lot of the fight scenes involved... choking. Diamond gets choked/strangled a lot, and so do other characters. By the third time, I was beginning to wonder why these characters weren't shaking it up a bit - stabbing, slashing, blasting, etc. Not really a problem, but it did annoy me a little that it appeared that strangulation was the main form of killing/fighting.

Whilst the plot was great, I would have to warn that in parts it does drag a little, and that there is a lot of inner monologue. I didn't mind it in parts, but after several chapters with not much happening, it did get a little boring, and I had to put the book down for a while. Also, the ending does seem to drag a little - there was a perfect point for it to end on a cliffhanger, and then it went on for another several chapters.

Apart from those few points, I really enjoyed A Bond of Venom and Magic and I can't wait to read on in the series, and there is such great potential for growth in the characters, romance and world, which I look forward to discovering in the next book! I certainly recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy worlds of fey, with mating bonds, action, and drama, drama, drama, and looking for a fun read, then definitely pick up this book!

Rating: 3,5 stars.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of A Bond of Venom and Magic from the Rachel E. Carter YA book club on Goodreads!

Let me first tell you that holy crap the synopsis of this book sounds freaking amazing and it made me sooo excited to read this book. And in many ways, this book definitely lived up to my high expectations.

Alright so, A Bond of Venom and Magic starts out with Diamond Gillon, who's half fae, half human.
Everything she held dear most, has been brutally ripped away from her and she is being hunted. Not by humans, not by fae, but by beasts you wish to never encounter, and Diamond has no clue as to why. Then, she's saved by a group of guards - royal guards - and is being whisked away to the Evil Fae Queen.

ABOVAM was all the action-filled, fast paced, high fantasy novel, crawling with awesome creatures that I had expected it to be and gods it was so cool! Tomlinson's world building was impeccable, I thorougly enjoyed reading this book, and I cannot wait for the second book.

I, however, did have some problems with the characters. First of all - alright hold on a second. Let me first say that I did like how Diamond initially wasn't all that fierce or brave, but did she really have to be that clingy to Hugo, so reliant? I know he just saved your arse but really?
Second of all - shudders - love triangle. If you know me just a teeny tiny bit, you probably know how averse I am to those. So that's all me, sorry.

Lastly though, it's just that, throughout the book, a desire slowly built up inside me, to smack the hell out of the idiot of a commander. Of course, no one - not even a fictional character - can be perfect, but that desire was so strong sometimes, that I literally wanted to jump into the book to smack him upside down and kick his shins. And I swear, if Diamond does not make him freaking grovel and kiss the ground she walks on, I will jump into the book to smack her upside down!!!

I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED A COPY FROM THE "RACHEL E. CARTER YA BOOK CLUB" ON GOODREADS.

I needed some time to think about this one. In general I really liked it. It is very well written and easy to read. I loved the main characters.. especially Hugo and I loved every scene he was in. I was speeding through the first bit, not willing to put it down, but unfortunately life gets in the way.

However, the story became a bit slower in the middle, which is not a problem if the main character, Diamond, wasn't whining all the time. She felt like a strong character at the beginning of the story but when she met Hugo that all changed.

It is an action packed story with dragons, magic and good world building, which I liked, but it also had the very familiar ingredients of insta-love and kind of a love triangle. Even though the insta-love is explained it wasn't very refreshing or original.

The ending was kind of surprising even though the reasons behind it were not very believable to me.

Overall I really liked this book and I am definitely going to read the second book.

First things first - this book has perhaps the most infuriating cliffhanger I have experienced in a while. Mostly because it leaves things unresolved between the two main characters, and that is so frustrating. I sincerely hope the next book is going to be published soon, because I'm already tearing my hair out in suspense.

Diamond Gillon is a half-breed, raised in a small village away from the vindictive eyes of the Queen. When the village is attacked and her father murdered, she comes under the custody of an intriguing blue-winged fae, Commander Hugo Casimir. He is charged by the Queen with bringing her any fae who has magic, and he is not allowed to mate with anyone while in the service of the Queen. Which makes things a bit problematic when his feelings for Diamond, and hers for him, are stronger than anyone anticipated. Once they are in the Queen's tower, things become tense and the fight for survival may depend entirely on Diamond finding courage and strength in the face of heartbreaking loss.

Diamond was a strong character, in spite of all the adversity she faced. She didn't take crap from anyone, not even the intimidating Hugo, which was impressive. She fought for herself and her friends, and I liked seeing her get stronger as the book progressed. Hugo was, in my opinion, quite a weak character. I became frustrated with him quite a few times over his obedience towards the Queen and his callous disregard for Diamond's feelings. A lot of it seemed to be feigned for the Queen's benefit, but he never really told Diamond that, so he came across to both her and the reader as kind of an asshole. This made the ending hard for me, because this was not resolved before the book ended.

I am definitely excited to read the next book so that I can find out what happens next! Karen Tomlinson executed great world building and told an amazing first part of a story, and I expect that to continue in the next book.

I loved this book!! It's been a while since I wanted to reach into a book and strangle a character, but by the end that's exactly what I wanted to do to one of the characters, which I feel is a great sign that the author is doing something right. The relationship between Diamond and Hugo is nothing but complicated, yet as a reader I didn't feel that was a problem. If anything, it kept the story intriguing as you don't know what's going to happen next. If you're looking for your next book boyfriend, Hugo is it! I can't wait to find out more about him!

Alrighty. Let's get on with this. I have sooo much to say. Too much if we're being honest. This was a very interesting read. I received this book in a giveaway and had NO IDEA what I had signed myself up for. Not very like me, I decided NOT to read the summary before delving into this book. I was flying blind the whole time. Not the worst decision I've ever made...

Here are some things I don't get:

If Avalonia's Queen worships Erebos (aka the Devil) and Ragor "Wraith Lord" seems to also follow this dude, then why the heck don't they like each other? Why they fighting? Why not work together to snuff out the remaining light (aka Diamond) in the world? Hmm??? Seems like they're just askin' to get their asses whooped by one wimpy female.

General Edo's alliance...Who the FRICK is he working for?? Because he seems to hate the Queen, Ragor, AND Diamond in equal measure...For COMPLETELY DIFFERENT REASONS! What even is his endgame, his goal, his hopes and dreams? What is the bloody POINT of it all? Why pretend to be on EVERYONE'S side? Which he basically was doing...I'm just so confused!

The Characters:

Oh Lord skippy, here we fucking go...

Diamond is basically Caia (Tale of Lunarmorte series by Samantha Young) without all the badassery. She comes into her goddess-given powers through chance and a need of them (as Caia did), and is a half-breed who is looked on with contempt for her dual nature.

I have to admit, the lass is pretty weak. She was SUCH a totally damsel with her whining and pity-party. Even her best-human-friend Tom has more bravery and drive to survive. GO TOM! And SHE is supposed to save the world from darkness? *snorts* We'll see. If she can stop wholly obsessing over Hugo to make something meaningful out of everyone's sacrifices for her, then she may have some serious potential with all that power coursing through her veins. I have higher hope for the next book.

Hugo is like a more belligerent version of SO MANY notable love interests that I have come across in all my reading. He has the loyalty to his Queen that Ash had, until Meghan came into his life (Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa); so too with Diamond coming into Hugo's. It's Ash whom he most resembles, ESPECIALLY with both of their paralleling pasts. I can see the ruthlessness of Lorcan (Ancients of Light series by Heather Fleener) in him, and his all-consuming possession over his "Nexus."

In spite of his similarity to so many inspiring men and despite all his brass and bluster, he's a fucking pansy-assed puppet. Just as Diamond believes him to be. Yeah, I don't really like the guy. Can't say I HATE him, per se, but he's DEFINITELY on my shit list.

Zane. No, he's not really an important character to this plot, but I love his gay ass SO DAMN MUCH! His playful bossiness and fun-loving attitude—and his constant flirting with Tom :D—gave me SO MUCH LIFE! We do NOT get to see enough of that dude to please me. *sigh*

Jack (aka Prince Oden) is completely human and TOTALLY crushing on our main girl. Poor sap. She ain't interested bud, more's the pity too. He has some inner badassery that we don't get to witness often, but put him in the right situation and he will FUCK YOU UP. Definitely a Prince to watch out for. I'm sure he will lead his people well.

Despite my obvious disdain for our leading lady and lad, I really did enjoy reading this book. It was third person POV, so we got to see a lot more from the minds of MANY of our characters, rather than just the heroine and/or hero (though the story was LARGELY theirs to tell). I'm intrigued by the goddess-angle and how that will play out with so many people coming to Diamond's aid, as well as trying to keep her down because of the goddess' intentions for her. One thing is clear for Diamond though; she can trust NO ONE and the battles she faces will be hers alone to fight and survive through.

I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the author/publisher.

This book was really spectacular. I had heard so many good things about this book, and I am so glad that I listened and took a chance on this author. Tomlinson's brand of high fantasy really impressed me.

The plot of this book is really complex. There are so many different elements that are bound together to make the story. There are a lot of breadcrumbs throughout the story that I would have loved more information on, but will no doubt be answered in the next book. The world building is really fantastic and quite vivid. There were some twists in the plot that I was not expecting, which I enjoyed. Anything that keeps me guessing gets my heart pumping. The story was really fast paced. I loved the action in the story, but I would have also liked things to slow down now and again.

The characters are very powerful. I felt that Hugo was the strongest character. We get to see his inner workings and feel as he feels. He is a very willful character that is conflicted a lot throughout the story. Diamond was a character that I didn't really feel as much for. She was mostly a damsel in distress throughout the book and I would have loved to see her more confident and capable. At one point in the book she has to survive in the woods for weeks alongside an injured Jack. She has to care for him and help them survive. This part of the book was where I enjoyed reading about Diamond the most. Throughout the rest of the book she seems way too dependent upon Hugo to the point that it was just annoying. And I have to be honest and say that I don't care for her name one bit. It just sounds silly to me. I liked Jack's character. He seems like a nice guy and a good ally. He seems to be very interested in Diamond, and his interest strikes me as very genuine. Diamond saved his life and he develops feelings for her. It makes for a very compelling aspect of the story. Especially when Hugo and Diamond have a bond and are secretly fighting their feelings for each other. The Fae Queen was just despicable. She really made me want to claw her eyes out. She was so heartless and unforgiving. Just plain evil.

I really appreciate some of the diversity in the book. I really liked the racial issues that were touched upon in this book. Since Diamond is half fae and half human, she is considered a half-breed and looked down upon. Half-breeds have no rights and are treated unfairly in the book. Diamond has struggled with her social status all her life and you can tell that it has taken its toll on her in some ways. I also liked the inclusion of gay characters in the book. I really hope to see more of Tom and Zane in the next book. I adore them.

I would have liked more clarification to the magic in this world. Diamond just possesses magic all of a sudden with no explanation. When Hugo uses his magic it is very vague. I didn't feel like I fully understood where it came from or how it worked.

I really adored the array of fantasy creatures in this book. They were all very creative. I especially liked that Tomlinson's version of fae have wings. I'd never really seen that done before and felt it was a unique twist.

Overall, I love this story! It delivers a very unique high fantasy story that you will not want to miss out on! I definitely have a new favorite author, and one that I recommend you watch out for. I expect great things from her!

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for honest review.**

Nonstop action and adventure!

Diamond's world has just been turned upside down. Her home has been attacked, putting everyone she cares about in perilous danger. Beasts are hunting for her and she has no idea why. Even stranger, her apparent rescuers are royal guards, which are about as unlikely of saviors as they come.

Among the guards is Hugo, a scarred warrior with secrets of his own. As the journey ensues, Hugo finds himself inexplicably drawn to Diamond and her magic. But his orders are clear; anyone caught using magic will face the wrath of the queen. Despite the bond forming between him and his new acquaintance, he must deliver her to face her punishment.

A young prince, mighty dragons, a spiteful queen, and more than one secret schemer make up this jam-packed adventure. Magic, chaos, danger, and suspense are aplenty as our group battle enemies (and each other) in order to survive.

Despite this being a fairly wordy tale, the pacing was very quick. The world building is complex but easy to follow once you get used to the different races and their abilities. There are bits of the world's history thrown in, too, filling in the gaps of how this realm came to be in a war and the prophecy that affects Diamond.

My main gripe is with the repetition. The dizzying loop of hot and cold (love and hate) between our main couple was exhausting, as was the constant threat of danger. At some point you almost wish the author would just kill the characters to put them out of their misery. Too much angst can be just as harmful to a story as not enough. I hope to see a more balanced tale in the next installment.

In closing...
Magic, mayhem, and action abound! This book definitely delivers a punch of fantasy and suspense. I look forward to continuing the adventure. Four suns!

The drama is real and although I find it annoying because I want the characters to be together, I will forgive it because I really, really liked this book. It was exciting and it was about fae with feral instincts, which is pretty much the best thing ever in my book.- Keira, Goodreads.

My love for this book is somewhat hard to express, so this will be less critical and a lot more image/GIF filled and excerpt filled (I recommend viewing this on my blog to see these media: https://pirateladypages.wordpress.com...), so that you can hopefully be just as excited about this book as I am!I absolutely loved the romance in this book and although I hated certain events because of it, I really do love some feral fae and all of the problems that come with evil queens and prejudices.... well, I like reading about them, anyway. This book also had some really powerful battle scenes and Diamond, the main character, went under a pretty good amount of character development. In short, I cannot wait to see where the author takes this story in the next book!

Much thanks to Karen Tomlinson and YA Bound Book Tours for providing me with an eARC of this book to review for you all!

I LOVED this book.

Before ABOVAM, I DNFed 5 books. It was terrible and I thought my world was ending.

Diamond is a ousted half-fae that has lived in a small village her whole life with her father. I believe this gif accurately sum's up her life pretty well:

In comes her adventure when the fae queen's minions swoop in and kill her father- with an attempt to kill her as well. It is only the Queen's guard, Hugo, that saves her from a dire fate. Why? She doesn't know...and neither does she for that matter.

Hugo has always done as his queen asks. That changes when he defies her to save Diamond's life. He knows he must bring her in front of his queen to face judgement for being half-fae, but instead he desires to protect her and watch her grow. He must choose between following orders from his Queen or helping Diamond, a slit of a girl who he barely knows. Though, his bonds pull him in different directions and his choices may not really be choices as at all.

Was this original? No.
But was it good? yea, it was.

We've got all our guilty pleasure tropes:
- broody tortured alpha male
- potential love triangle
-chosen one female character
-insta/love
-Misunderstandings because MCs can't bother to have a conversation

But it's all done well AND I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. So much in fact I've been putting off book 2 so I can anticipate it and savor it in bits and pieces.

If you're looking for a quick fantasy romance full of magic and love and oh so much betrayal, A bond of Venom and Magic is YOUR book.

I do need to say, however, even though I loved it, I felt diamond was an incredibly weak character who couldn't save her self if...well, you know- her life depended on it. That was annoying.

Also Also Also, I love the original cover so much. I'm so upset the second cover follows the second edition covers :(

Full of action and romance, A Bond of Venom and Magic by Karen Tomlinson is fast paced and exciting. Characters are great and so is the story and lore. I absolutely loved this book and devoured it quickly because I needed to know what would happen next. I mean, heck, I even went and tweeted author Tomlinson because of what was going on in the story.

Protagonist Diamond will not be everyone’s cup of tea. I’ll start off by saying that. She isn’t reminiscent of other recent female YA fantasy protagonists who fight, sneak, or play games. Diamond, instead, is innocent and guileless. Overprotected by her father, living in a small town, she never learned how to fight or fend for herself. So, when she’s forced to fight, she can’t. It’s aggravating but also humanizing. I loved that she had anxiety and panic attacks, simply because it made her relatable as someone who also experiences anxiety and has had panic attacks. I mean, if you’re suddenly forced into battle after being coddled your entire life, panic attacks make sense!

Opposite Diamond is Hugo. Now, Hugo, Hugo, Hugo. I don’t know what to make of him. Part of me loves him. Part of me doesn’t. Most of me is reminded of Edward Cullen. He’s broody, overprotective, aggressive, possessive, etc. It makes sense in the context of the story, but still, it’s written so over-the-top that I was left wondering how anyone could ignore his feelings or be oblivious to them. It does get resolved towards the end, but it was still distracting.

So, you might be thinking, given the problems with Diamond and Hugo, how is this a four star book? Easy. It works. Diamond needs protecting and Hugo is over-protective. It just clicks and makes your heart flutter, which is surprising for me to say since I actually want to pair Diamond with human Prince Jack, who, given his limited page time, has me completely smitten. He’s the best and I love him and want to see more of him. I know end game will be Diamond/Hugo, but it doesn’t detract me from wishing for Diamond/Jack.

There is something that happens in the ending that did leave me disappointing. A character takes a turn, and it doesn’t really gel with everything that has happened up until that point. Usually, an author would leave tiny hints that could click into place when the turn happens, but I didn’t feel it with this book. It felt completely undeserved and really knocked a star off the rating.

A Bond of Venom and Magic by Karen Tomlinson has solid characters, but tentative lore. It feels like Tomlinson does know what she’s writing about, but hasn’t wanted to put anything in stone yet. That said, this was a fun read that I would recommend to fans of the Twilight series or the Sookie Stackhouse series, but looking for abstinent YA.

I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED A COPY FROM THE "RACHEL E. CARTER YA BOOK CLUB ON GOODREADS.

So I won’t lie to you, reading something from an Indie Author is always a toss-up. You never know if it will be a barely scratch the surface type or an intense world building adventure. Some end up being completely memorable and other times you can’t even remember the plot line a month after finishing it.

With this in mind, and having waited a month to let it marinate, I can honestly tell you that this book was one of the best indie reads to date. The book begins by throwing you into a world that’s in chaos with our heroine, Diamond, losing everything she holds dear. This is kind of a make or break for me at this point, because I absolutely hate to be set up with a protagonist that’s going to be meek and subservient and wishy washy with emotions. Not the case with Diamond. Certainly she’s a girl and I love that Tomlinson addresses some of the uglier things that a female will inherently face. You can’t build this intense world and not have a few shady characters. That being said Diamond doesn’t back down from a challenge and it makes me love her even more.

So we got ourselves a kickass heroine, an intense plotline and richly built land with twists and turns that’s clearly well thought out. That should be enough for a good book right? Yup and it is but Tomlinson goes one step further and gives us Hugo. Someone every girl can get behind as he straddles the line between too good to be true and realistic enough to have some substance we can sink our teeth into. Start thinking Rowan from Throne of Glass series and it paints a good idea of Hugo. I Love love love that there’s an attraction between Diamond and Hugo but that Tomlinson makes you wait for it and there isn’t some insta-romance.

Then there’s the ending, which left me a little mad but ending happily ever after isn’t how book 1 in a series is supposed to end. I I love that there was a clear story being created in this book but enough intrigue left that you know the following books will still have a lot going on. Overall I really enjoyed this book and if I hadn’t known from the start it was an indie-author I would have assumed this was big time published book with some intense backing. Truthfully, this book was an intense read that I wish we saw more of and I cannot wait for the next one. Give this book a try I promise you won’t be disappointed.

First I wanted to thank Karen for trusting me with the ARC and allowing me to review this book. I've been seeing a lot of good feed backs about this and it really did deserve the ratings that it has! It has a rough start for me, but that didn't hold me back from enjoying the story from the beginning until the very end of this book.

The Characters and Romance. Okay, for one, I am really hoping that there would be a character development for Diamond in the second installment. There is a tendency for her to be completely dependent to Hugo. I just hate how she tends to be weak whenever Hugo is around, but I do love her fighting spirit. There is No insta love here, except there is a colossal amount of physical attraction and denial of feelings between the two Protagonists, specially Hugo. But in the end I really admire Hugo. He's arrogant, rough and a little bit over bossy for me. But nonethless I just love his willingness to bear the pain of Diamond's hatred in exchange for her safety. It is indid a great love he felt for Diamond.

Interesting and Unique World Building. The writing style is a little bit confusing and clunky and it took me some time to get everything straight because the worldbuilding was somehow an infodump and unclear. But after I got the hang of it, everything fell into place. I got so hooked up I really can't stop myself from reading.

The Pacing. The start of the story just started fast and action-packed. Although the story got a little bit long specially their journey to Valentia, it didn't stop the flow of the story to be interesting.

Unexpected Allies and Enemy. Oh My, when I thought I already know who to trust, a wicked twist suddenly happened. And like Diamond, I'm totally shocked.

Overall,This book is totally good. It may took an effort to get through everything and figure out the world, but it seriously has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. I am already waiting for the next sequel of this book. I really wanted to see how Diamonds character will develop. I love the magic and the characters. And it would really be nice to put some glossary in this book, wherein some terms, concepts, and places are being defined. This would have saved a lot of time for its readers to be able to catch up fast on the drift of the story. But overall, This book is a FANTASTIC READ!

This is a Review from an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC), Thank you to Karen for this opportunity.

So OMG... Firstly can I just say after my read through of Harry Potter for the first time and the completion of Justin Cronin's Passage trilogy (The City of Mirrors) back in June 2016, I had read one or two things but nothing that grabbed me, which sent me into a 6 week long reading slump.

Until I remembered this little beauty, to say I was a little cautious picking this book after reading such literary masterpieces (and I know I should take an objective stance when reading and not compare to past reads but I was in a massive book hangover-y slump guys, so give a girl a break yeah?) But I had a sneaking suspicion that this book would either kill or cure my reading slump.

To say it cured my reading slump was a massive understatement, It has made me fan girl, and I am talking Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Harry Potter level of fan-girling, I have even planned the cosplay.. (Yes, I know).

So A Bond of Venom and Magic is a High fantasy novel, with a Young Adult protagonist it is the first debut novel by Karen Tomlinson and is that start of what promises to be a fantastic series called The Goddess and the Guardians. It starts in the middle of the action and the pages just fly by from there. Our main character Diamond Gillon, our naive but occasionally headstrong heroine, finds herself thrust into the world of the unknown, neither looking human enough to fit in their world or fae enough to find her place with them. She meets and battles mythical creatures which she only ever thought were figment of her fathers' bedtime stories. Karen creates an engrossing world, with loveable if somewhat infuriating (at times), & conflicting characters.

This novel has everything you'd expect a high fantasy novel to have, action, loss, love, betrayal, magic and so much more, teamed with exquisite story telling, which in my opinion deserves to be up there with other authors of this elk such as Cassandra Clare, Sarah J Maas & Sarah Pinborough.
I wish Karen Tomlinson every success.

A bond of Venom and Magic is easily going to be one of my favourite reads of 2016!

Thank you for reading.

I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED A COPY FROM THE "RACHEL E. CARTER YA BOOK CLUB ON GOODREADS.

This book started out with lots of action and I was excited to jump right in and learn about the eight Kingdoms and its players. Diamond is a girl from a small village that wants more out of her life but fears that she's stuck because of her bloodline. She's a Half Fae/ Half human and is currently the lowest caste which subjects her to cruelty and indifference from nearly everyone she meets. During a surprise attack which ends in her father being killed, she is saved by a harsh looking Fae with blue wings. Hugo is abrupt and harsh in his handling of the situation but its clear from the very start that he and Diamond have a connection. With Diamond being a Half blood, her options are limited as to where she can go for safety and she ends up being herded with Fae soldiers to an Island city ruled by a sadistic queen... Along the way she discovers she has a magical ability so powerful that it rivals the gods, finds friendship and maybe more with a Mortal Prince and deepens her connection to Hugo. But with war upon them and Hugo loyal to the Queen, things are going to get a lot worse before her journey is done....

I liked this story and all the various characters but Diamond frustrated the crap out of me! I understand that she had a hard life of being oppressed because of her heritage but she was so pitiful sometimes. And I don't understand why she kept giving Hugo chance after chance when he kept being an asshole to her! I hope that her being so helpless in this book means that we are in for some serious character development in the next books and that she turns in to a badass heroine that I know she can be!!!
