DescriptionMaekistocera at Kadavoor.jpg |
English: Maekistocera sp.; male (not described). Observed at Kadavoor, Kerala, India.
(Identification attempt by Pjotr Oosterbroek: "In the Leiden museum, I made comparisons between your photos and Megistocera filipes filipes from Africa, and Megistocera filipes fuscana from Indonesia. The two subspecies differ only in the male genitalia. The colour characters of your specimens are very specific and certainly not as in filipes. Megistocera has two species, filipes and longipennis. M. longipennis is in North and Central America and the male has short antennae. Therefore, your specimens are not longipennis. So, the only possible conclusion is that your specimens represent a new species, not yet described.") Characters. Jeevan Jose, 2015: (identification by Pjotr Oosterbroek: "in the Leiden museum, comparisons were made between Jeevan Jose's photos 1, 2 and Maekistocera filipes filipes from Africa, and Maekistocera filipes fuscana from Indonesia (the two subspecies differ only in the male genitalia); the colour characters of the male and female from Kerala are very specific and as such might represent a new species, but first more knowledge about the variability of the species is required)". Behavior note: A strange crane fly commonly found in low light environments. They approach a leaf and fly drawing circles in the air striking the leaf with their long legs and antennas. They continue this process more than minute before making the perch. I think whether this is to check any predator hides underneath the leaf. |
