Nikon COOLPIX 995 is a camera that is has tons of features, the nomenclature is extensive and it is easy to use. This camera is so powerful and has so many great things, even writing a summary is difficult. This camera has full shutter/aperture features it quickly replaced my SLR film camera, without missing a beat. Also has Programmed Auto, where the camera automatically controls shutter speed and aperture. Shutter-priority Auto allows you to control the shutter speed and the camera automatically selects the correct aperture. With the Aperture-Priority Auto you can set the aperture and the shutter is automatically selected by the camera. Manual which allows full control of the camera's shutter and aperture. The Long time (BULB) exposure (up to 60s) even has a Noise Reduction setting and when On can reduce noise in the form of randomly spaced brightly colored pixles in the image. The zoom ability is excellent and focuses very well when extremely close up to the subject, such as flowers, insects, objects. In middle zoom position, a flower icon is displayed in yellow to assist with optimum lens setting. The Infinity mode is excellent at photographing landscapes and building. The lens automatically moves to a position suitable for infinity focus and locks in position. (Flash cancel is selected automatically.) Self timer allows you to be in the photograph, and after pressing button it gives you 10 seconds to get into position. Or if you press the button twice, it gives you 3 seconds. Playback is a great mode for reviewing pics saved on the memory card. More details can be seen on the saved image by zooming into the desired areas and scrolling with the Multi Selector. I wish I could review more about the camera, but I'd be here for quite a while! I love my camera and despite the cute name, it really is an excellent camera. Only reason why I didn't give it a top rating of Excellent was because of the time it takes to save the image, between photos. And the slight lag time it takes from when I press the button to when it actually "snaps" the picture. Since I do not take many action photos (except for when photographing family activities), this is not a problem for me. Good luck with your digital camera research. I hope I my review was helpful.Read full review
I purchased this used digital camera to take better images of my products. I had trouble with other camera because they did not capture the true colors of my handcrafted quilts. I purchased the Coolpix 995 from a great e-bay seller and professional photographer, and he included lots of extras that I am still trying to master with periodic e-mails to him as to my progress. I am very satisfied with the purchase, my images are wonderful, plus, since the camera body rotates, I can take photos from various angles according to my interior or exterior lighting. I am using the auto mode but my plan is to learn how to use the manual mode and become a good amateur photographer. I highly recommend this camera.
Nikon does not make this camera anymore. I use it for clinical and laboratory photos of very small objects in less than ideal lighting where flash cannot be used. Operators cannot always use two hands on a camera. The camera is small/light enough to be held/operated by one hand. The swivel feature of the lens unit is also useful at times in tight spots. I have 6 or 7 of this camera and my staff is very used to its features and operation. Since the images are adequate for clinical records it is best not to retrain people on new cameras. The best frature is the zoom in macro-mode. I can be at arms length and still get a 1:1 image. Flash is adequate when used. Can't beat the ebay prices! I've bought this model for as little as $55 and as much as $130. I hope i can keep finding them on ebay for years to come. Cons: Plastic doors on card access break. Batteries are not available from Nikon. Generic batteries are not great and you'll need a few extras to keep shooting during procedures. The camera does not like LED lighting for focus or photos even with flash. It needs halogen or incandesent/fluorescent lighting w/o flash. CF cards may be harder and harder to find as time goes on. I use a card reader for downloads. I've only had one camera unit die over about 10 years of continuous use.Read full review
I bid on and won this Nikon Coolpix 995 to replace one stolen. It takes excellent pictures, better than my newer Coolpix S630, even though it has only 3.2 megapixels vs. 12.0. It uses CF cards like my dSLRs. The ability to angle the lens to shoot over crowds or down at a flower while looking directly at the LCD screen is a unique and valuable advantage. The multiple programmable features allow custom control of exposure, flash, focus, lighting sources, etc., making this a very versatile camera. It can even shoot short movies(up to the capacity of the CF card). The price I paid on the auction was only 15% whatI paid for my stolen one years ago and this replacement works just as well. All in all I am extremely pleased with this camera.
This camera takes incredibly sharp pictures, far sharper than most newer 5-10 MP cameras I've used. Only pictures from the new SLRs seem to be as sharp and noisless (eg Nikon D80). I wish I could find a pocket camera as good as this old one. I use the camera for work documenting various tests and am continuously happy with the results. The rotating body is helpful. Drawbacks are the weight, time to turn on, and pause time when taking pictures rapidly. Only problem I've had is that the CCD has started to loose a few pixels - I only found out when I saw "stars" on a night long exposure.
