Learn the Basics of Tying Wood Together With These Three Lashings

If you were ever in a Scout troop, you might’ve learned how to tie lashings to build camping gear. If you missed that merit badge, however, these charts can show you simple lashings to help when you need to build something a little on the low-tech side.

The above graphic comes from The Art of Manliness, showing how to make the square lashing. You can also find charts at the source link below for diagonal and shear lashings. Lashings are used for very basic construction when you don’t have access to nails, screws, or other relatively modern conveniences. So, the next time you need to build a life raft out of drift wood or just want to make a tent the hard way, it’s helpful to know how to build them.
