GlobalFoundries has joined the 5G Lab alliance which has about 50 members including Vodafone, National Instruments, Nokia, Rohde & Schwarz, NEC, Claas, Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom.

GloFo joins 5G Lab

GloFo intends to offer its FD-SOI process technology to the mix of technologies required to implement 5G.

“We are pleased that we are now working with the 5G in the cooperation between research, teaching and industry Europe’s micro- and nanoelectronics cluster”, says GloFo’s Rutger Wijburg, “high-frequency RF circuits are particularly important for broadband applications such as Augmented Reality. Because of the high cutoff frequency of about 300 GHz with FD-SOI, there’s the possibility of massive use of sensors and actuators in IoT applications. These chips for the networked future come from our Dresden factory Fab 1. ”

GloFo’s technology portfolio also includes high-performance RF (SiGe GaAs, RFCMOS) from fabs in Burlington in Vermont, and Singapore.

The 5G Lab Germany at the TU Dresden is an interdisciplinary team with nearly 600 scientists from 22 research areas of TUD. It is co-chaired by Prof. Gerhard Fettweis and Prof. Frank Fitzek. The aim is to provide key technologies for the development of 5G mobile radio standards.
