Dan Jurgens is an American comic book writer and artist. He is best known for creating the superhero Booster Gold, and for his lengthy runs on the Superman titles Adventures of Superman and Superman (vol. 2), particularly during The Death of Superman storyline. Other series he has been associated with include The Sensational Spider-Man (Vol. 1), Thor (vol. 2), Captain America (vol. 3), Justice League America, Metal Men, Teen Titans (vol. 2), Zero Hour, Tomb Raider: The Series, Aquaman (vol. 3), and the creator of DC Comics' imprint Tangent.

Jurgens' first professional comic work was for DC Comics on Warlord #63. He was hired due to a recommendation of Warlord-series creator Mike Grell who was deeply impressed by Jurgens' work after being shown his private portfolio at a convention. In 1984, Jurgens was the artist for the Sun Devils limited series (July 1984 - June 1985), with writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas. Jurgens would make his debut as a comic book writer with Sun Devils he began scripting from Conway's plots with #8 and fully took over the writing duties on the title with #10. In 1985, Jurgens created the character Booster Gold, who became a member of the Justice League. His first work on Superman was as penciller for Adventures of Superman Annual #1 (1987). In 1989, Jurgens began working full-time on the character when he took over the writing/pencilling of the monthly Adventures of Superman.

Dan Jurgens was the penciller of the 1990–1991 limited series Armageddon 2001 and co-created the hero Waverider with Archie Goodwin. In 1991 Jurgens assumed the writing/pencilling of the main Superman comic book, where he created a supporting hero named Agent Liberty. During his run on Superman, Dan created two major villains, Doomsday and the Cyborg. Doomsday was the main antagonist in the Death of Superman storyline. Jurgens wrote and drew Justice League America for about one year and in 1993 pencilled the Metal Men four-issue miniseries, which was a retcon of their origin story. Jurgens wrote and pencilled the 1994 comic book miniseries and crossover Zero Hour. He wrote and penciled layouts (with finished art by Brett Breeding) to the Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey miniseries, which was a follow-up to the successful Death of Superman storyline. In 1995 Jurgens and Italian artist Claudio Castellini worked on the highly publicized crossover Marvel vs DC. In the same year, he gave up the pencilling duties on Superman.

Jurgens scripted and provided layout art for the Superman vs. Aliens miniseries. The story was about a battle between Superman and the aliens created by H. R. Giger (a.k.a. the Xenomorphs), from the Alien film series. It was co-published by Dark Horse Comics and DC Comics in 1995.

In January 1996, Jurgens was writer and penciller of the new Spider-Man series, The Sensational Spider-Man (Vol. 1), at Marvel Comics. The title was initially conceived to be the flagship showcase for the new Ben Reilly Spider-Man (it replaced the Web of Spider-Man series). The initial seven issues (#0–6, January–July 1996) were written and pencilled by Jurgens. Jurgens pushed strongly for the restoration of Peter Parker as the true Spider-Man and plans were made to enact this soon, but Bob Harras, the new Editor-in-chief, demanded the story be deferred until after the Onslaught crossover. Jurgens had by this stage become disillusioned with the immense amount of group planning and constant changes of ideas and directions and took this as the last straw, resigning from the title. In a past interview several years after his Spider-Man run, Jurgens stated that he would like to have another chance on the character, since his run was with the Ben Reilly character during the Spider-Man Clone Saga, and not Peter Parker.

Jurgens had also written and pencilled Teen Titans (vol. 2) for its entire two year, 24 issue run. New Teen Titans co-creator George Pérez came on board on this incarnation of the Titans as inker for the se

A pretty good Rebirth issue. I am probably biased because I love Batman Beyond/Terry McGinnis, but even though I know the origin story by heart, I didn't mind reading it again. Also, the plot teaser for the mainline issues looks interesting. So glad Max is still canon!

'Batman Beyond Rebirth #1' by Dan Jurgens with art by Ryan Sook feels a bit like a new beginning, and kind of feels like a continuation at the same time. I think I'm ok with that.

This book takes place 6 months after Batman Beyond #16. There is a bit of an origin story that gets retold for those not familiar with the characters. Gotham is being threatened by the Jokerz. Terry reconnects with Commissioner Gordon, Barbara, but the question still remains, where is Bruce Wayne? The other question is who is behind this sudden resurgence of the Jokerz? And why do all the Rebirth books end on such cliffhangers?

I liked the story well enough. It's a title I would probably regularly read. I did really like Ryan Sook's art. I was only familiar with this character from the long ago cartoon series, so it's nice to see him in print and doing fine.

I received a review copy of this issue from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this comic book.

Strong start for what may be a very promising series. Good storyline, awesome illustrations and a ton of action. I really enjoyed it!

I have to say first and foremost that I never really watched this show growing up, and in fact, I refused to watch it because it did not have Bruce Wayne as Batman which for my childhood-self was unacceptable.

Dan Jurgens continues the story of Terry McGinnis after a global disaster (which is never really described or depicted except for a few pages in issue #5) and his return to Neo-Gotham to again don the cowl of Batman. The story is predictable with a diverse cast of characters that all seem to play supporting roles for Terry who himself is a dull hero with little personality and even less intelligence. Batman is a detective, warrior, and ninja wrapped all into one, but Terry is a moody kid who can't win a fight. Ryan Sook does a fantastic job on art for issue #1, but the rest of the volume done by Bernard Chang, with Pete Woods offering a dynamic and cartoony twist for the action-heavy issue #4, is lacking with weak character designs and uninspired layouts for most of the pages. I may end up watching the show to find out who Terry McGinnis is and see how he becomes Batman, but this comic hasn't grabbed my interest for any future issues any time soon.

Batman Beyond is one of the places where Rebirth does a good job of setting the slate clean; we get the end of the whole alternate fill-in and return to Terry Mcginnis in the role. But it's strange that a story about a future world spends so much time rooted in the past. The main thrust of the story is about a villain bringing back the Joker, and, while there's a nice twist buried in that plot, it means the entire story is looking over its shoulder at its past, both in the events that have shaped this era and also in Terry's personal life. Fortunately, the action sequences throughout are very kinetic and Terry and his allies have some impressive face-offs with the Jokerz, with appropriate twists and turns. There's a final epilogue that's a little cringeworthy, but other than that, it's mostly enjoyable, with good art and action, even if it doesn't feel as futuristic as I might like for the series. But for everyone who may have gotten turned off by the previous Batman Beyond series' decisions, this is a good place to return to it.

Batman Beyond, Volume 1: Escaping the Grave (Rebirth) by Dan Jurgens et. al. is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in mid-June.

Terry McGinnis as Batman, guided by an elder Bruce Wayne to protect Neo-Gotham from the Jokerz - a mad posse of lookalikes bent on mayhem and gang warfare. However, Terry's high school crush, Dana Tan, is torn between the good in Terry and the evil in their mutual friend, 'Terminal,' a Jokerz who seems to be working hard to keep the Joker alive via artificial resuscitation.

Bien Dan Jurgens.

Absolutely loved the futuristic components of this component and seeing Terry all grown up. I love the way Maxine Gibson got reintegrated and now works with the team. I also loved the development of Dick Grayson, his daughter, Terry's younger brother, Melanie, and Damian. I routinely felt like continuing to read instead of sleeping (against my best interest but whatever). The ending to each issue was riveting, and gave so much to look forward to. I'm absolutely looking forward to the December 2020 issue and can't speak any higher of how well done this comic was done.

Jurgens totally killed it with the first volume of Batman Beyond Rebirth. The title started off a bit slow, but picked up in hurry. I’m not always the biggest Batman Beyond fan, but this story may have convinced me otherwise. I’m really trying to write a glowing review without giving anything away. Just know that the whole story is based upon the resurrection of everyone’s favorite clown. But that’s all you’ll get from me. Read it to find out the rest. it’s a good one.

It's kind of appropriate that pages of this retell the Batman Beyond series premiere "Rebirth." I actually prefer this art style over the style of the show. Neo-Gotham looks more like the Los Angeles of Blade Runner than it did in cartoon form. Some events from the comic book series before this seem to be alluded to but not explained clearly, but this could still be a fine entry point. Not sure how I feel about the attempt to bring the Joker back to life though.

Ok this is gonna be tough without giving away any spoilers .But…
…This was somewhat of what one expected from the rebirth title oneshot , with much of the issue focused on the back story of Terry becoming the new batman and yet at the end we witnessed the cliff-hanger of a lifetime.

So Avert your eyes if you don’t want spoilers , Coz My ratings are based solely on these Spoilers and the art which is always in case of the Batman Beyond title weird to the say the least and hence always a turn off …

4.0 - I keep looking at those four stars and thinking, “Really?” and then paging through the issue again and saying, “Really.”

On Batman Beyond, Dan Jurgens perfectly encapsulates a slew of pre-existing plot and quickly churns it into interesting conflict that manages to tie in to our present day DC books.

Ryan Sook’s artwork is phenomenal and amongst my favorite of all the debut books. He’s as bold and dynamic as Paquette both with incredibly lightweight linework (maybe because he inks himself?). It’s a pleasing combination on an issue that does double duty on recapping Futures End and setting up a present day conflict centered on the town full of Jokers – one, in particular.

Errr. This one might be a bit mehh. Mostly, Terry tells his origin story while fighting petty Jokerz and reconnecting with Barbara and Matt. I don't know what to think about Barbara still being the younger version in 2016 series. I'm curious, are we going to get Dick back, too? If so, he should be younger too to match Barbara, right? I like Dana's new look, not so sure about Terry's, though. I like Terry's look in 2.0 series the best. That was the golden age of Terry's looks, seriously.

I try to steer clear of the central comics to focus on the ones that haven't got that core mythology, purchasing issues that is. I thought a future batman could fulfil that gap and so far it's not bad. The rebirth ends on a huge reveal, still processing it so only time will tell with this one. The art work is great and I just find slipping into this new rebirth was a good start. Definitely a strong series with storytelling and artwork.

I mean, I guess someone was going to have to bring the Joker back to life. Usually that would make me dismiss this out of hand, but this cult of the Joker think is very clever. Also, I can't deny how much I love the idea of Barbara as commissioner.

I've never really read a Batman Beyond regularly. This is my first attempt.

Between the Rebirth special and this issue I feel like I've got a handle on the basics. I like the visuals and I can appreciate the mindset of a new Batman.

I'm in for the foreseeable future.

Merged review:

I've never read a Batman Beyond title before. I'd seen some of the cartoons growing up, but that's about the extent of it.

This was pretty darn interesting. The art was interesting, though not quite my style. And the story has been put out in a manner that is easy to follow.

I'm in for Issue #1.
