If you’re going to Percona Live Europe Amsterdam 2016, and are specifically interested in MariaDB-related technologies, there are many talks for you to attend.
On Tutorial Monday, you will want to attend my tutorial The Complete MariaDB Server Tutorial. In those three hours, you’ll learn about all the differences that MariaDB Server has to offer in comparison to MySQL. Where there is feature parity, I’ll point out some syntax differences. This is a semi-hands-on tutorial as the feature scope would make fully hands-on impossible!
On Tuesday, my session picks include:
- Common Table Expressions in MariaDB Server 10.2. You’ll get to learn from the very people implementing it, Sergei Petrunia (rockstar optimizer developer, and MyRocks hacker), and Galina Shalygina (a Google Summer of Code 2016 student who also helped develop it).
- Percona XtraDB 5.7: Key Performance Algorithms. It is safe to presume that MariaDB Server 10.2 needs to include Percona XtraDB 5.7. Percona XtraDB has been the default storage engine for MariaDB Server since forever. In fact, MDEV-6113 suggests this will be available in the yet unreleased MariaDB Server 10.2.2. Learn why Percona XtraDB matters from Laurynas Biveinis, the Team Lead for Percona Server.
- MySQL/MariaDB Parallel Replication: inventory, use-cases and limitations. Jean-François Gagné is the expert on parallel replication, not only from a usage and benchmarking perspective, but also from a feature request standpoint. I highly recommend attending this talk if you care about parallel replication. It will be packed!
On Wednesday, my session picks include:
- The morning starts with a keynote from MariaDB Foundation CEO, Otto Kekäläinen titled The MariaDB Foundation – Ensuring continuity and open collaboration in the MariaDB ecosystem. It should be an interesting one to watch, considering how far the Foundation has come. Astute observers might remember the MariaDB Foundation being announced at the Percona Live Europe event when it was held in London back in 2012!
- MySQL Load Balancers – MaxScale, ProxySQL, HAProxy, MySQL Router & nginx – a close up look. While we’ve not seen a pure MariaDB MaxScale talk, this session promises to be quite important if you’re interested (especially nowadays).
- Securing your MySQL/MariaDB data. Join Ronald Bradford and myself to learn about the variety of security options that MySQL and MariaDB Server now provide you.
- Meet MariaDB 10.2. This is the canonical MariaDB Server 10.2 talk. You’ll get the lowdown of what is planned, what is currently available and what we can look forward to going forward.
- Optimizing Queries Using Window Functions. One of the highlights of MariaDB Server 10.2 is that it will have window functions. If I had to pick between the two competing talks, I’d probably end up here as this is new/emerging tech in the MariaDB Server space.
- Transparent tablespace and log encryption on MariaDB 10.1 using Amazon Key Management Service. One of the things that make MariaDB Server stand out is that you can encrypt tables/tablespaces, plus the logs that are associated with them. In the event of data leakage, you’ll want to ensure that there is an external key management system available; MariaDB has a plugin to work with Amazon’s KMS which means you don’t have to store the key on the filesystem! This should be a good session overall on encryption and using an external key management solution.
- Less passwords, more security: mass administration of MariaDB servers with socket authentication. See the CEO of the MariaDB Foundation talk about using socket authentication. If you use Debian, you’ve probably already encountered this form of login.
- Scalable Big Query Using SPIDER Parallel Queries and OpenSVC. SPIDER, OpenSVC, MariaDB MaxScale, TokuDB and MariaDB Corporation consultant Stephane Varoqui will be talking about what keeps him busy these days!
- Our very own Federico Razzoli will talk about Virtual Columns in MySQL and MariaDB. Interesting to note that while MariaDB got this feature in release 5.2, and MySQL only recently got this as generated columns in 5.7, you’ll note the implementations differ and one is more featureful than the other (but I won’t spoil the surprise – go see the talk!).
- Introducing ScaleDB, the New Clustered, Distributed Storage Engine for MySQL. Ivan Zoratti will talk about ScaleDB, which plugs into MariaDB Server.
- Using SPIDER for sharding in production. Learn about SPIDER and using sharding in production, from Kentoku Shiba (the developer himself), with an appearance by Stephane Varoqui too. There will be demos throughout the talk as well!
So those are my Percona Live Europe picks that focus on the MariaDB ecosystem. Notably absent though is more MariaDB MaxScale content from the authors of the application. And what about MariaDB ColumnStore?
There is of course, still time to register. Use the FeaturedTalk code to get a discount.
Thanks for this blog post, this is a good overview of MariaDB talks at PLAM16.
In the schedule all talks are tagged “MySQL”, “MongoDB”, “Postgresql” and “other” at https://www.percona.com/live/plam16/program/schedule/. Could you please also add a MariaDB tag so that it is easy for participants to list them? I imagine not everybody finding this blog post.
