County Championship: Draw against Hampshire sees Yorkshire remain second

Yorkshire were denied the chance to push for victory as bad light and rain hampered play on the final day against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

The visitors resumed on 143-2 and Gary Ballance passed fifty before being bowled by Gareth Berg for 72.

Yorkshire declared on 238-5, leaving them 70 overs to bowl out Hampshire.

Jack Brooks struck three times in 12 balls as the hosts fell to 84-4 but bad light and rain ended Yorkshire's hopes of moving top of Division One.

Ballance brought up his third half-century in the Championship this season with a boundary off Berg but the Hampshire seamer got his revenge as the 35-year-old took his 200th first-class wicket.

Tim Bresnan made a quickfire 27 but, after he was caught off Andy Carter, Yorkshire left the home side two sessions to survive.

Ryan Sidebottom trapped Will Smith lbw for four before Brooks' second spell saw him have Tom Alsop caught at square-leg, Jimmy Adams edge to second slip and James Vince send the ball straight into the hands of Bresnan at first slip.

With Yorkshire looking to press home their advantage as they battle Middlesex for the Championship title, bad weather prevented play following tea and, once the rain began to fall, the umpires called an end to the match.

Yorkshire trail Middlesex by four points with both teams having three matches remaining in Division One.
