The Kenny Chesney Gay Rumors Made Renee Zellweger Sad

In the dirty divorce days of Renee Zellweger’s random relationship with Kenny Chesney, the word that kept following them around was “fraud.” Fraud was the reason listed on their annulment papers for why their marriage ended after 4 months. Lots of people thought that “fraud” might have been a simple and more-subtle one-word way of saying “Surprise! Turns out the groom is gay!” (Kenny has since said the reason they undid their marriage was because his “box was too full“). Renee was recently reminded of those gay rumors during an interview with The Advocate to promote Bridget Jones’ Baby. I hope they brought a box of Kleenex, because the “Kenny Chesney is gay” talk is a real bummer for Renee.

The Advocate: After citing “fraud” as the reason for annulling your marriage to Kenny Chesney in 2005, many media outlets alleged that he must be gay.

Renee Zellweger: I forgot about that. It’s a pretty big thing to forget, isn’t it? That made me sad. It made me sad that somehow people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.

I love that she forgot about that. Poor Kenny Chesney. There’s only one person in this world who is able to forget about the gay rumors, and it’s the person he was legally married to. Oh well. At least he’s got a big ol’ pile of sleeveless muscle shirts and country music money to cry into.

Renee doesn’t like people thinking fraud = secretly gay, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to tell you what she meant by “fraud.” “Renee’s new face” can pull out a chair for “Renee’s divorce” at the table of things Renee Zellweger doesn’t want to talk about.

“Well, I’d said all I needed to say on that subject. I’m an old-fashioned gal who doesn’t feel it’s appropriate to hang out your laundry on the lawn. I feel you devalue yourself as a human being when you share very personal things with a bajillion strangers who are making fun of you. I just don’t see that there’s any dignity in that. But sometimes it is difficult to just let something be what it is, especially when it’s unnecessary ugliness. Once you’ve said your piece, shouldn’t that be enough? And why is the ugliness that’s perpetuated in the media so attractive to people?”

I know Renee is done talking, but I wish she would clip some of that fraud laundry to the line. If Renee really cared, she would at least give us a hint about what the “fraud” was. Or maybe she can’t, because the truth is far worse than the lie. Maybe the “fraud” was that Renee walked in on Kenny in the bathroom and discovered he was actually just Billy Corgan in new country drag? Don’t worry Renee, your secret is safe with me.
