He said: 'When I left for work on Tuesday there was a PCSO standing on the corner and that's when I realised it must have been something serious.

'People around here are stunned. I'm a parent and it's scary to think that this has happened on our street. Most people around here are decent and keep themselves to themselves.'

One lady, who lives in Preston Street but asked not to be named, said: 'It scares you when you've got kids of your own that something so shocking can happen on your doorstep.

'I think the overall feeling in the area is one of sadness. I just think of when my kids were that age and how vulnerable they were. '
