Shifting Needs #1

Protector of the Alpha

Rate this book
Adopted at an early age by a wealthy family, Jake Davis has always seemed to have an easy life. Even in college he was blessed with good grades and an apparently clear path to a pro football career. Good thing his best friend keeps hanging around to keep his head from getting too swollen.

Zakiya Incekara has always been...odd. Being fluent in six languages and having a flair for international cooking should open the world to him, but those skills leave him isolated.

When Jake sees Zak for the first time, with water beading down his slender form, something inside him shifts, and it hungers for Zak. To have him. To claim him. And Jake knows that whatever it is, it won’t be denied.

When they are approached by a man who claims knowledge of a secret past they share, Jake and Zak are thrust into a world they would never have believed existed. The forests of Alaska might seem an odd place to find your destiny, but these men will meet the challenges head on, as they learn that sometimes you have to make sacrifices to be Protector of the Alpha.

This was a great book and to be honest so much happened I wouldn't be able to explain everything anyways, lol. So you have to read it. It was a great and a different take on the shifter world. We found a lot about what they're about but I feel like there's a lot more that we're going to learn. I'm ready for the next book. It really was great.

Original Blog Post: Blog Tour, eARC Review & #Giveaway: Protector Of The Alpha (Shifting Needs Book #1) by Parker Williams

I have lost count the number of shape-shifter, paranormal stories I have read but I remain a true fan. There is nothing like a good paranormal read, especially when the only aim for the day is to relax.

Protector of the Alpha is a shape-shifter story with a twist. The expectations of the readers over how the usual story develops and the how the usual characters are going to behave will have to take a back seat for a lot of the unexpected comes in at the most unexpected times.

If one was to look at tags and it says alpha male, the immediate visuals would be of a hunky, uber-attractive man whose muscles bulge. They would eventually utter or cry out the inevitable primeval cry of 'mine' somewhere in the story when they meet their mates. In this case, these elements are all there, but the twist also starts from there.

We have Jake, the quintessential all-American quarterback with the looks, money and intelligence to make him irresistible, suddenly smelling his mate. Unfortunately, he knows nothing about the shape-shifter world neither does he understand why 'mate' comes to mind more often than not.

Then we have Zakiya Incekara, a smaller man whose ways and manners are somewhat courtly. I found him a strange one, especially when he started speaking using formal grammar and words the layman would need a quick dictionary app to know the meanings of. So we all look to the title and wonder, who is the protector of the alpha male in this story and where does this title come in? The answer is the other twist for it is unexpected and unusual.

Now this is a simple tale but it turns out to be a complicated one by the twelfth chapter, which in my mind I consider as Part II of the book. This is right after the twists came out. It got me thinking that the story is now going to behave like the little formula that it should. Then another twist in the plot happens once again and suddenly the whole arc of this story goes into a very different direction.

So the story finally meshes and Jake and Zak discover truths they thought had been nightmares. Foretold at birth, both Jake and Zak could not continue fighting against their converging destinies. They must either go and meet it head on or turn their backs forever on a people who may lose their lives to a cruel leader. Suddenly, they have responsibilities and truth of the matter is, they are really just kids who thought they were going to college and eventually find jobs. They never once thought to rush off to Alaska and be the saviors of a people they knew nothing about.

Although this has 237 pages worth of text, I found this a fast read. Well, fast in my case for I done and finished this in around two hours. No, I did not skip and no, I did not have to click forward for this is a very light read. What kept me interested was the way the story went and it continued to surprise me. I did see some minor flaws in editing; then again, what book has no minor flaws in any editing so I care not for that issue. What I did read is a simple tale that is not and this is just the first book. It may get more complicated. Especially when Jake's best friend, Casey, meets his own destiny... and the ghosts from the past appears.

Definitely wanting to know what comes next.

I was over the moon when I heard that Parker Williams was writing a paranormal shifter story. Parker and I do share a giant love for the genre, so I couldn't wait to see what he'd bring to it. The world he's created is fascinating, weaving many known tropes, along with new ones, into a tale that's not to be missed. 'Protector of the Alpha' is book one in his 'Shifting Needs' series, and I, for one, loved it and can't recommend it enough.

I'll give a warning, now, in advance. This is going to be a slightly difficult review to write, because so much of the mystery, the suspense, and who these people really are, is a giant spoiler, and thus my lips are sealed.

Jake Davis. Zakiya Insekara. Casey Scott. These three men, and their destinies, have been tied together for far longer than any of them have known. Jake and Casey have been best friends since they were kids, done everything together, and even gone off to college together. In an aside, let me just say that Casey is the most incredible best friend, ever, and everyone should have one just like him! In fact, Jake's parents paid Casey's tuition just to ensure that Casey would be at college with Jake. It is at school that Jake meets Zak. Well, actually, it's where he first smells his delicious scent. But then so many strange things are happening to Jake. Nightmares, getting violently sick to his stomach, his adoptive parents disappearing, sleeping for eighteen hours straight, and then eating everything, and I mean, everything, in the kitchen, in one night. What is happening to him?

Then Jake, Zak, and Casey, meet Hakiim. Hakiim tells them a story of their births, of prophecy, of an Alpha and his Protector, fated heart mates. Of the madman who decimated their enclave, murdered their birth parents, and the small group loyal to the old alpha who whisked the two babies away. Of their old shaman who betrayed them all, and their new shaman, bonded to Jake as children, and always kept close. Although, to be honest, Jake is less than pleased about that new knowledge. In case you're wondering—it was a pretty exciting evening of revelations.

“So let me get this straight, pardon the pun. Zak is the leader of some group that has a madman at the helm. And you want him and Boo- Boo kitty over here to stop this Kell, right?”
Jake quirked a brow. “Boo- Boo kitty?”
“Hush. Go clean your litter box or something, the grown- ups are talking.”

~ Casey (best friend, EVER)

OMG this is such an incredibly exciting book. The world the author has created is intricate, fun, sexy, and utterly fascinating. I promise you that you'll be hooked from page one. Jake, Zak, and Casey, are strong, complex characters whom I completely fell for. The ending blew me away, and I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next installment. Thank you, Parker, I loved it!

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

There I was looking for something to get me over a reading hangover and this dropped into my inbox. I love shifter stories so bumped it to the top of my reading list and ended up not putting it down until 3am. YES, it was that good!

The first thing I must say is the world building is fabulous. There are all sorts of historic events that lead to the way the story enfolds and you learn it all as the MC’s do as they have no idea of what is going to happen to their lives or what they mean to each other.

Jake Davis, adopted at a young age by a wealthy family, has everything going for him. Brilliant football player keeps up good grades at College and is popular with his peers. He is fiercely protective of his best friend Casey and unusual circumstances have kept the two men together at the same College.

Jake is the first thing that will fascinate you in this book. After pinning down a smell that draws him and makes him feel a bit funny he discovers the new boy Zak in the shower and from the moment on he can’t stay away.

From that moment on his life is also turned upside down, he starts having nightmares, his body changes, something appears ‘off’ with his parents and numerous other things happen that leave Casey worried about his best friend.

Zak is an enigma. Cold doesn’t even star to describe him, aloof is too polite and he makes a point of cutting Jake off at every turn, but as much as he wants to stay away and not give into his attraction to the other man it is impossible.

Without giving anything away these guys have a destiny and it is huge. They have to risk their lives to help save others but the marvel is that this isn’t something that happens over night. This has been years in the making and that is where the story really drags you in. There are so many twists and turns that bring us to this point and the story line is just sheer pleasure to read and unravel.

Parker Williams has crafted a very well thought out story that you will find nearly impossible to put down. I have just one complaint and it is the same complaint as usual…..cliff-hanger…it’s a pretty damn big one!

The prologue of PROTECTOR OF THE ALPHA grabbed my attention immediately and the book ended with "Where's the next one!?!"

The premise is ingenious, the characters are engaging, and for a girl who reads a lot of paranormal romance, this one really hit the mark!

When I asked for this book I did not realize it was YA. (My opinion, the blurb does not lead you to believe these are young MC)Or just out of that categories depending on where you feel the age stops. These characters are 19. To me that is YA, I don’t read anything with MC’s that young. So the only reason I contained on was because this was a review book, and I was obligated to.
Having said that, I did enjoy this book, and my personal predigests aside I give it a strong 4
This one has three main MC’s Jake, a football star just staring out in college but big NFL dreams. Than Jake’s BFF from childhood Casey that followed him to college and Zak.
We start off by Jake going through a lot of weird body, mind changes that he can’t explain. These include bad dreams, eating tons of food and doing amazing on the football field. Then one day in class he’s hit with this amazing smell that he must find. Once he finds that the smell is the natural scent of Zak, he starts feeling very possessive of Zak. But still doesn’t understand what’s going on with himself. He confides in Casey but he is clueless but offers support. As Jake tries to get to know Zak, Zak gives him a merry chase. And weeks later agrees after Casey talks to him to agree to a date with Jake. While on the date a gentleman named Hakiim approach them and informs them both that Jake’s adoptive parents have been killed, and that Jake, Zak and even Casey have a destiny to save an Enclave of shifters in Alaska.
Over all a good read, I found the beginning moved well, but the “merry chase” that Zak led Jake on took way to long and found myself wanting to skim read. And probably would have if it was my own, not review. But once Hakiim showed up and we got into the meat and bones of the story it picked up. But again, the track to Alaska we slowed again. I understand points had to be made, skills had to be learned. I just lost interest. This whole story takes place over month’s maybe that’s why it felt like it dragged on?
This is the first in the series, and were Zak and Jake story is wrapped up, they left it open for Casey to come next. Have to be honest, I probably won’t read. Yes it’s about shifters, and I love shifters! The author is a good word smith, just not my cup of tea.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review by Crystals many reviews

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

I liked this one. It’s a story of overcoming the odds and choosing your own path regardless of what’s set ahead of you. The romance is a slow build, which is appropriate for the new adult range this story finds itself in, though I do wish there would have been just a tad more speed to it. I wondered at one point if the story was even meant to be a romance with Jake and Zak butting heads for over half of the book. Although once the romance comes into play it’s very gripping. This author puts a lot of emotion and time into the relationship and it shows. The storyline itself is very good. It’s unique—which is a big plus in my book—especially in the PNR genre, although it does lag for a bit after Hakiim shows up. It picks back up though. In a big way.

I’m not exactly where this book is meant to lie on the scale from YA to adult, but if you were to ask me (as I’ve already mentioned earlier), I’d place it somewhere in the new adult/adult range. There is something very coming of age about this story. For Jake and Zak and Casey, they are just finding themselves and their purposes in life. This story is about them accepting that purpose. It comes at a time that is very fickle and all three are just that until they’re not. They grow up and find their paths without realizing it.

so...this was my first shifter book and i cannot tell you how much i loved it. (it helps that jake shifted into a panther which is my favorite animal ever).

these 3 boys (college age) - jake, zak and casey - knew they were special and different but they didn't know why. as they discover their lot in life each of their strengths becomes obvious to them and those around them.

zak was not my favorite. i didn't like the way he treated jake even after finally admitting his interest. it was near the end of the book that he started to show some strength and by that point i only loved him because jake loved him and i loved jake. jake was the stronger of the 2 characters (and not just physically) and i liked him better. i thought his reactions to all the changes and inexplicable incidents were completely realistic and expected from someone who had been warned of changes but knew not what they were. part of his appeal is probably from him being a strong protector.

casey was really awesome - his snark and confidence outstanding. i'm anxiously awaiting his story.

No. Just no.

It was painful to get through the first 60% of the book. After that I started skimming. I don't feel like I missed anything.

Ugh, where to begin. Paper-thin characters, cookie-cutter plot, poor pacing...

I think I knew it was all over 23% into the book with this passage:
It was as if he was seeing Zak through new eyes. The sinew of his neck begged Jake to bite, to mark. The breeze fluttered through hair that called to be brushed, to feel the silky strands trailing over Jake’s body. His cock grew harder as he moved toward Zak. When those beautiful eyes peered at him from beneath the long lashes, and the upturned lips gave a shy smile, Jake groaned as he came in his pants.

Really. Really? Really. It doesn't improve much from there.

The buildup to the finale was tedious, and when they meet the big-baddies? Meh.

I can't say that I would recommend this book at all.

Very different take on shifters here. .. and yes, it was. ..interesting. Waiting on the next book to see if this is an author I'd like to continue to explore. I NEVER warmed up to Zak. At. All. He was demanding, bratty, insulting. ... stilted. But for some reason, I fell in love with Jake! Grin. ... As with the last few books I've read, it seems to me the authors are rushing things just a bit, it feel as though I'm MISSING something. Maybe I just need to expand my little Ole brain and imagine where I'm supposed to go while reading instead of having things laid out all nice and easy. But again, since I know this story has another one coming (hopefully soon) I'll look forward to the next and hope for some clarification on a few things. .. like why Zak speaks the way he does all proper like and at times it seems like he isn't American. ...

This book offer different concept of shifter and omegaverse. It refreshing for me to read this type of book. But when I reached half of the book and the mystery is finally revealed, the initial spark that I feel when I started reading this book is slowly faded and makes this book less enjoyable to read.

Three stars for the Trio!

This is my first book of this author and I enjoyed it. Liked the concept. Loved Casey's carefree attitude and bringing humor into the scenes. I adored Jake and Zak, their romance and their bond. The building of their romance took many pages sometimes so much that it nagged me at the back of my mind. Their first meeting ignited possessiveness and ownership in Jake and I thought the claiming will not be far behind. But I was surprised with the way their bond works they were capable of making that far. Their skin tingles when they are in each other's presence, and when they are in the same room which they were many times in the book, their reaction to each other was very exciting but when they started talking, its whole another story. Their dialogues were few and contradictory which left a weird feeling in me. Zak was a stubborn character and an alpha in mind while Jake was his protector and an alpha in physical strength. But they were teenagers at the end of the day and to give them that mammoth of a task did take away some weight. I also thought that the nightmares they suffered were given too much of an importance rather than the present. After the entry of Hakiim, there were talks of the past and the characters which were brutally killed, the gory mahem and how their people were still suffering in the present. After reading all of that build up I thought the author will stretch the fight and retribution scene but it felt somehow weak and rather quick. And also the indecisiveness and unawareness of their serious roles and duties of the MC's were questionable. That the fact they were really fighting to know their place was dragged almost to the end. The evils which were ruthless in their murders were killed quickly and the lack of strategy by the MC's as to how to defeat the evils was surprisingly non-existent. They were just relying on their natural powers and really it was confusing when it took place because the author failed to mention where was Zak held and how they were able to hold Casey and Hakiim and for how many days.

I think that the plot had a good concept, only the execution could have been better, it would have scored almost perfect stars. But the author pushed the past too much in the book and waited too much for their bond to take place and extended their journey too much in terms of days to do the "deed", addressed too much of the nightmares and dragged too much of an unawareness of MC's role for me to really fall for the book. The MC's could've been my fav's easily had they shown me an extra-ordinary chemistry. That sizzle was lacking. And characters play an important role, like Casey's role was a lovable one and he took away quite my fondness in this book. Otherwise lacking of the better framework of the plot restricted it's stars for me. But I think I may read the second one in the series since I liked Casey and to read that the skunk is his mate is funny and ugly at the same time. I don't know how they are going to consummate their relationship when Casey will have to hold his nose close when the skunk shapeshifted. Hehe.

In Parker Williams self-pubbed New Adult novel, something weird is happening to college student and star athlete Jake Davis. His usual focus is shattered by a weird smell that puts him on edge. He can’t get it out of his mind, and he feels he’s being watched, which only makes the edginess worse. Nightmares invade his peace of mind. Jake’s best friend Casey tries to reassure him, but it would help Jake more if Casey would just move out of the dorm and live with him in the house his adopted parents had bought him. Jake and Casey have been a team nearly since birth, but Casey can’t take anymore from Jake’s family, since they’re also paying his education.

Jake meets Zak, an oddly arrogant, spitfire of a man, and the source of the enticing aroma that has been tormenting him for days. Jake knows on a primal level that Zak is the man for him, and Jake for Zak. His body reacts to Zak in ways no one has been able to reach him before. His exhaustion and hunger increase, and the nightmares get worse, as if Zak was a trigger. He can barely focus on his beloved football.

Zak isn’t nearly in as bad shape as Jake after their first meeting, but he, too, is changed. It’s not as simple as lust at first sight. Late one night he receives a cryptic phone call warning him about dark times coming and someone who will keep him safe must be cherished in turn.

Beneath the surface of college life, Casey’s concern and support, and the tangle of their mutual attraction, both Jake and Zak struggle with the enigma of their lives; their nightmares increase, filled now with blood, terror, and mystery that goes back to their infancy.

I don’t want to give any more of this story away. Like Parker William’s YA books (under the name Will Parkinson) this story is about a journey that three friends must undertake and endure in order to find and accept their true selves. It’s also a story about sacrifice, magic, shifters, the True King, and evil rulers who must be overthrown.

What I liked about the book was the slow burn—beneath the surface of ordinary life, the destiny of the three young man simmers as they gradually come into their full powers. The pacing is very well done; by the time they need to accept the paranormal aspect, the urgency of their situation eases the transition. For the reader, the author takes no short cuts to the build up and acceptance of their paranormal destiny.

I would have liked to have read more about the people of the hidden enclave, but there’s also a sequel to look forward to.

Ok so if you have read my previous reviews you know that I LOVE a good shifter book. I have read hundreds of them, so to find something different isn’t always an easy task. But Parker Williams did just that. This one was new and inventive and oh so much fun to read.

I was instantly drawn into the dynamic between not just Jake and Zac, but between Jake and Casey as well. See all three play a very vital role in this book. Yes the book is about Jake and Zac and finding out what lies in store for them, but Casey is a must. But there is nothing romantic between Casey and Jake, they have been best friends for many many years. The way that they interact with each other had me laughing in so many different places. Casey always felt like the outsider in his family as well as in school. Jake is his cornerstone, the one person who has always been there for him. Without Casey, Jake feels like a piece of him is missing. So by now you are probably wondering why I am talking so much about Jake and Casey when the book is about Jake and Zac. It all works, I promise.

Oh Jake and Zac, well see Zac is unlike any character I have read to date. He comes off as cold, with an almost rude air about him. But you see, my dear sweet Zac sees the all-american football player and all he can see is heartbreak. He doesn’t think he could be anyone that Jake would want to be with. I wanted to wrap him in a hug and tell him it will be ok. When Jake looks at Zac, all he sees is someone he has to be close to, someone he wants so desperately in his life. There was a lot of push and pull with these two.

Now here is where it gets a bit complicated, well maybe not complicated per say, but it is when the fates reveal the big things that Jake and Zac are about to face. I loved how all three boys handled what they learn, and how they go about dealing with it. This book is fantastic, the story makes you not want to put it down, even when the kids are demanding dinner. It is a suspenseful, romantic, hilarious, action packed, beautiful book. There is a mystical element about it that leaves you begging for more. Like I said above, this shifter story is unlike any I have ever read, and one that I highly recommend if you are looking for something new and fresh. A wonderful start to the series, I am looking forward to the next one very much.

Jake Davis has everything going for him. Star athlete on the football team, a great best friend, parents who love him and no need to worry about money. But when he discovers an alluring scent, everything is about to change. Meeting Zakiya Incekara jumps starts something in Jake he doesn’t understand and before he knows it, he’s no longer on the football team, his parents are missing and even he admits he’s acting strange. But even with all that, he can’t help but be drawn to Zak. And when Zak and Jake learn why Jake is changing, they’re swept into a world where anything is possible and everything is dangerous.

Right from the start I was drawn into this book. I loved that while shifters were a secret, they still merged with humans and had the Protector/Alpha duo. It was interesting to learn about the world and to see the power dynamics between the humans and shifters. As characters, I adored both Jake and Zak. Jake might be a jock but he’s also sweet and caring and once he sees Zak, he’s way beyond possessive. Zak, on the other hand, is more stiff and cold compared to Jake. He’s very formal when it comes to addressing things and VERY demanding to the point that he represents the ‘alpha’ amazingly well… except when they’re in bed where Jake takes over :P

I really enjoyed this one but my biggest issue was that the ending and the overall Alaska experience was so rushed. I wanted to explore more of their people and especially Jake’s nature but also to experience more of Jake and Zak in their destined roles. Other than that, I found the prologue to be a little… unnecessary. IMO, it didn’t really play a part in the overall story and, ironically, had me constantly wondering if the ‘twins’ mentioned at the end of the prologue were somehow Jake and Zak. They aren’t but that didn’t stop me from constantly trying to understand how the man from the prologue was connected to the overall story LOL.

All in all, this was a great shifter story. I loved seeing the slow but fast development between Jake and Zak. Fast because their instincts are forcing them together but also slow because they didn’t want to rush anything. I adored both Jake and Zak and even loved Casey, Jake’s best friend. I’m hoping his book is next because I can’t wait to see where things go from here!

This book takes all of the tropes of a paranormal shifter story and tweeks it. So no one is really who you expect them to be which makes for a great read. I am a fan of shifter stories, I love that there is a cosmic reason that that is the one person for you. That undeniable attraction and feeling of satisfaction of finally finding the "one".

Jake Davis is BMOC, he is the starting quarterback for the football team, good looking and smart. You would think that this would make him kind of a jerk, but it doesn't because he is a genuinely nice guy. Everything just seems to come easily to him but the one thing he really wants, Zak.

Zak is testy, prickley, a smartass. But you are ok with that because that's just him. He even speaks in a completely different cadence than everyone else. He is attracted to Jake but he doesn't know why, and so he fights it, and that just makes it funny.

So while these two are circling around each other sexually, their world is being turned upside down with some pretty incredible revelations. How they deal with it will make or break not only their lives but all the lives that they are eventually responsible for. There is a big bad out there that is stalking them and working together is their only chance for survival.

This is the first book in the series and as such has a lot of back story and world building happening. So be prepared to take in a lot of information. I for one am a big fan of that type of world building so I enjoyed it but some people might feel like it's too much. There is one FABULOUS secondary character who is not only the comic relief but also the voice of reason through out most of the book. Pretty sure his world is going to be rocked even more in the next installment so that should be an interesting read.

This is a strong first book that hooked me on the characters and I will definitely be back for more.

This is book one of a new series. I will say the first quarter was a bit slow yet interesting. It introduced you to the main characters and set up the premise of the story and Series.
Jake, and Casey have been best friends since they can remember. Jake is very protective of Casey and vice versa. We find out a little about Casey’s family, basically that his Dad is an @$$. I would have liked to have known more about Jakes adoptive parents other than they give Jake a lot of money and also pay for Casey to go to college where Jake is. Zak was an intriguing different character from the get go. You could feel the air about him. These boys lives become more and more entangled and complicated as the story goes on. I loved how the sexual dynamics between Zak and Jake were like predator and prey and that at times it was hard to see which was which. I also liked that as the story unfolded I kept wondering who was the shifter and who was the Alpha and who was the protector as the title suggested. I kept changing my mind until we were finally told.
While there were a few things about the paranormal aspects I still had questions about I can’t say here without spoilers it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the story and it could be answered in the next book. I loved the quirkiness of each character especially Casey and I liked the big shock at the end that leads us into that story I can’t wait.

If you like different types of shifters, an interesting paranormal world within our world, New adult paranormal romance, some mystery and intrigue with a touch of humour and a very hot and sexy romance this is for you.

If I could rate this book 10 stars I would! The characters and the plot are exquisitely drawn. Zak is so formal and speaks in an unusual cadence, never using contractions. His body has an invisible personal space bubble around it that he considers sacred and will not hesitate to tell people that they have no right to come close. In spite of Zak constantly pushing everyone away, Jake is inexplicably drawn to him. Jake is a football player, popular with everyone, but all he wants is to take care of Zak. One day the reason for this is shown, and it's a turning point in the novel. Then there is Casey, Jake's best friend since childhood. Jake's parents even make sure Casey is there for Jake to the point they pay Casey's tuition at the college Jake attends. Why would they do this?
So many mysteries. Characters cast against type. Unexplained events. A shifter who protects. A human who rules. Another human who doesn't know magic but must use it. A teacher who dies when he is most needed. A villain who seems to gain power the more he is attacked.
I was captured by this story from the first page and so sorry when it ended. I am happy to say there is a sequel in the works!
Parker Williams is one of my favorite authors. He is able to write in many genres, from sweet YA (written under the pen name Will Parkinson) to gay romance to shifters to horror stories. An incredible talent, his books are auto buys for me. I highly recommend Protector of the Alpha.

Five stars!
Loved this book. Just flat out loved it. I enjoy paranormal books, especially shifters. But Parker took most of the common aspects of a shifter story and turned it on it’s ear. Like the fact that Jake didn’t KNOW he was a shifter, or that shifters even existed. I enjoyed that Zak and Jake didn’t fall into bed together right away. Zak initially kept trying to push Jake away at first, but it winds up backfiring. Jake thought he had done something wrong to make Zak hate him! Case brought some comedy to the story, but deep down Casey would do anything for his friends. He does bring some levity to Jake during a time when he’s struggling with changes in his life. The scene where Casey gives Jake the typical parent first date speech was hysterical! I think it was my favorite scene in the book. There is set up for more books to come and I can’t wait to read them when they come out.

Interesting but clunky and badly in need of a good editor. I'll give it 2.75 stars.

I did find the premise interesting and the plot had potential but the writing was choppy, clunky and at times the head hopping was confusing. More than once I had to back up to figure out whose head I was in.

This really could have been amazing. Unfortunately it fell short. The main characters where engaging but at no point did I feel they were connected as closely as the story portrayed. The secondary characters were also engaging and pulled their weight as far as pushing the story forward.

I felt the climax was disappointing. The bad guys were built up to be these powerful psychopaths that turned out to be sniveling cowards and easily defeated.

I'm hoping with proper guidance this author can smooth out the rough patches. I am interested in the next book because I enjoyed Casey but I'm not sure I'm ready to clomp my way through another tangle.

My biggest problem with this book is that neither Zak or Jake fought agaisnt the roles that were given to them. The moment Zak was told "oh hey you're an Alpha and the ruler of our people" he was all power tripping immediately. No shock, no anger, no disbelief, just quiet acceptance. And to me that was completely unbelievable and the moment I checked out of this one.

Don't get me wrong it wasn't a bad book or anything. I probably would have settled for a three or three point five had there been a little more argument over their new found roles. Zak is a little hard to get to like just because his speech pattern doesn't sound from this day and age, but he's still a likable enough character I guess.

Anyway, I'll probably be reading the next one so I might as well recommend reading the first. Especially if you're looking for a quirky read about a man with a stick up his ass and his too good to be true mate.

Wow this book was amazing!!!! I loved the world Mr. Williams developed and how he was able to integrate shifting and magic into a new direction. I loved the main characters, Zac and Jake. They were thrown together and while the mating urge was in both of them they wasn’t an insta-love. They both felt a draw toward the other but their relationship grew and progressed throughout the book.

I really enjoyed how Mr. Williams had the characters trying to reconcile their destinies with their original goals and dreams. It made the characters much more relatable and easier to connect with. I loved how the Casey kept getting sprayed by the skunk it was just hilarious! I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series and reading about how Zac and Jake continue to grow in their positions.

From that review: "There are so many little surprises awaiting readers in Protector of the Alpha by Parker Williams and none can be divulged because they are spoilers (big and small). That makes writing this review a tad frustrating, trust me, it really does. Parker Williams doesn't go for the typical here. That in itself delighted me when my expectations were upended as to where the story and characters were going. The discarding of the expected starts with the main characters…"

I enjoyed this alot, but would have almost given it 5 stars just because it was edited properly and I am so sick of reading books with stupid mistakes.

The story was interesting, and it was a bit of the twist on the usual alpha storyline. The characters were really well written and the best friend (lead in the next book) was also well established, so that you are looking forward to reading his story next.

I will admit that I love a shifter book, and this one was well written and just different enough to keep it interesting.

Jake + Zak
Set: Minnesota, Alaska

I was so happy to finally start reading this book but it didn't really work for me. The first 120 pages were really slow and boring, while the last part was hasty and the story approximate. The ending resolved too quickly and without many troubles. One thing I liked is that it wasn't your usual shifter book. I liked the concept but it didn't live up the expectation. I'm still going to read the next one in this series.

When I started reading this book I thought this book feels like a introduction. I thought "Don't tell me, but Book One is going be a slow paste intro!". It didn't start to pick up speed in till Hakiim first arrives Jake's homes. That about half way of the book. After that it got better. To the point that you want to read the next book. I just hope Book Two doesn't take half the book to do a intro.

I also cannot wait to read about Casey and shifter Shunk.
