Amica usually enjoys the snow, catches the falling flakes in his beak like a child. However he is not sure he is happy about his tasty grass being covered and his chicken friends refusing to come out and play in the deep white stuff.

Amica and his rug. He uses this rug to take his indoor dust bath every evening. Once he is finished he pulls it over to his pillow and sleeps for the night. His daily antics are chronicled in the book Amica’s World coming out in November. Please check out the Kickstarter project.

Amica resting his head on the arm of the chair next to his best friend. I like this photo because you can see how a rheas eye lids close from the bottom to the top - the lashes are are closed at the top of the eye. Sometimes when he gets bored or wants attention he will peck or pluck at the strings on the guitar which usually gets an immediate reaction from us.

Amica is molting again and these are just some of the feathers he has shared with us. We are making water-colored bookmarks and laminating one of his feathers on top for Kickstarter pledge awards. It is hard to believe that there is this much diversity of feathers on one bird.

My son and I have written a book called Amicas World with a forward written by Dr. Jane Goodall. The publisher is launching a kickstarter to help cover the initial printing costs of the book. I am trying to get the word out to as many people as possible with the help of our friends on Facebook. The book is about the first year of life with Amica a rhea that decided we were its flock and our house its home. It chronicles the challenges of having a six foot bird, 2 cats, dog and four humans in one small house. Please share this. This is the link: http://kck.st/2avpm2T
