Location: Puchong, Malaysia | Type: 2,500 sqft double-storey corner terrace unit
This 2,500 sqft terrace house in Puchong was given an interesting uplift using a fusion of locally-sourced materials and contemporary details. The designer imbued the home’s basic layout with a strong but cohesive palette where grey against dusty whites take the lead, followed by brick and stone. To make the design concept stronger, custom made feature walls were strategically integrated into key areas.
Homes with conventional floor plans are the perfect canvas for easy makeovers. If you would like to give your basic home a more expensive look, consider using a palette of trendy tones and raw materials.

Renewal By Removal
Location: Mtaileb, Lebanon | Type: Apartment
For this apartment makeover project, Beirut-based interior architecture studio ROHD (Roland Helou Design) was tasked to revive the unit from its poor structure and selection of furniture, and to replace it with assertive elegance. To turn the dreary interior around, ROHD first cleared off the space by removing superfluous elements and then moved on to use signature innovative techniques such as having the bar annexed to a dining table and making a showpiece out of the chimney wall while keeping everything minimal.
A minimalist approach can effectively transform homes that are meagre in terms of spatial quality. Where everything was once mismatched or terribly put together, the art of eliminating non-essentials can refresh a space immediately.

Bolder And Better
Location: London, United Kingdom | Type: Apartment
Formerly a Buick car showroom in 1930s, this apartment building in Mayfair was refurbished in 2015 by Eric Parry Architects with Studio Mackereth appointed as Interior Designer and Creative Director for each of the apartments and the lobby. “The client’s brief was to make a brave step away from the usual bland beige formulaic interiors of most speculative residential property developments. In response, our approach was to create luxurious apartment interiors that epitomize Modern Mayfair: bold colourful spaces that flow, settings that are dramatic without being overly formal, effortlessly stylish and unashamedly contemporary homes, ” says the architect.
If there’s little you can do to change the layout of your home spaces, focus on replacing your furniture, soft furnishing and other moveable pieces. This works well for homeowners who don’t like built-ins. Bold standalone furniture like a bright yellow designer chair or colourful rugs can really brighten up an old room instantly.

Old Meets New
Montreal, Canada | Type: 1,100 sqft row house
Nestled steps away from Montreal’s Lachine Canal, the newly renovated 1,100 sqft row house currently serves as residence and design studio for designers Mark Fekete and Viviana de Loera. Originally built in 1880, the building’s exposed structure supports a whimsical integration of traditional industrial materials with clever and efficient design. As in their previous work, sustainability continues to guide Mark+Vivi’s design efforts. Rather than shipping construction waste off to landfill, demolished framing and floor boards find new life as rugged yet tasteful furniture, cabinets, and counter tops.
There’s no need to toss away everything when you renovate your home. If there’s something that still works for your new design, use it. For example, steel columns and beams can be added to support existing timber frame structures. Elements like these when left exposed and given a new shade of paint, can gracefully compliment your new interior spaces.

Brand New Shine
Location: Selangor, Malaysia | Type: 14,000 sqft bungalow
In this bungalow spanning 14,000 sqft, a vibrant contemporary treatment was employed to bring the new design and existing structures together as a cohesive whole. Designed by Chanel Lim and Gary Lim of Design Spirits, reflective surfaces and custom lighting were generously infused into the key concept of the design to energize the spaces. In the living room, sleek materials along with designer furniture enhance the ambience, while ceiling details further complement the overall look.
Don’t underestimate the power of lighting – it’s a potent home transformation feature that can effectively create a brand new ambience, especially if it’s a large scale space. Combine that with glossy surfaces and sleek surfaces for an instant sense of polished glam in your home.
