Spectrum of central nervous system disorders in the first hospitalized HIV/AIDS patients

Abstract: Objective To investigate the spectrum of central nervous system disorders in HIV/AIDS patients.Methods A retrospective chart review study was used to analyze the patients with central nervous system disorders in the special hospital authorized for AIDS patients.Results Of the 339 patients who were eligible for enrollment,122cases(35.9%)were cryptococcal meningitis,37cases(10.9%)were tuberculous meningitis,36 cases(10.6%)were neurosyphilis,36cases(10.6%)were not clear,34cases(10.2%)were toxoplasma encephalopathy,17cases(5.8%)were cerebrovascular disease,15cases(4.4%)were PML,13case(4.1%)were co-infection,12cases(3.5%)were fester sex meningitis,9cases(2.6%)were HIV-related encephalopathy,4cases(1.1%)were viral meningitis,4cases(1.1%)were non-tuberculosis mycobacteria infection,2cases were intracranial tumor.The mortalities of no-clear diagnosis and tuberculous meningitis were 29.4% and 16.2%.Conclusion Opportunistic infections,such as cryptococcal meningitis,tuberculous meningitis are highly prevalent in central nervous system infection with AIDS patients with wide variety of clinical manifestations.Those patients usually have a low CD4 counts and high mortality.
