'Superwoman #1' by Phil Jimenez is a number 1 in the DC Rebirth series, but it kind of has a feeling that there is a lot that has gone on before. It's not the best place to start if this is your introduction to Superwoman.

Superwoman is Lois Lane. That's not a spoiler as it's established on the first page as she is talking to Lana Lang and lifting a tractor over her head. She has received the powers of Superman after something has happened to him. But she's not the only one. Lana is her confidante and helper as she tries to figure this all out.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is claiming the title of Superman with a fancy robotic suit, but that isn't going as well as he'd hoped. When an aircraft carrier is mysteriously pushed, Lex is helpless and Lois has to try to figure out how to stop it. She's still new to the powers, but she has an unexpected ally in the fight.

It's a confusing place to begin a series. There is some explanation and some flashbacks along the way, but I felt like there were things that I was really missing, like the events leading up to Lois getting these powers, and why are there suddenly so many Supermen and Superwomen?

I suppose it will become clear, and I also know it's a case of a lot of these books being linked together rather than linear in and of themselves. You end up getting a part of the story by only reading one title, instead of 4 or 5.

I received a review copy of this issue from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this issue.

SO GOOD!
I knew Lois was going to be Superwoman, but not Lana as well! Two Superwomans working together! So cool!

I am a newbie in the comic book world, so take my review with a grain of salt. While I do like the original Superman and his stories, I was happy to see that Lois was getting her own story, but with a twist. If you are unfamiliar with the Superman universe and how things work, things can be a little confusing. Spoilers ahead.

Lois Lane and Lana Lane somehow are endowed with Superman's powers and do their best to help. We slowly learn through a series of flashbacks what the sequence of events that lead up to this startling development. Lex Luther makes an appearance and tried to claim the mantle of Superman for himself and fails miserably. The ending left more to be desired. This was a solid first issue, but I have no interest in picking up the next issue.

A solid 3 stars. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

I wanted to wait and process my feelings before I left a review. When I heard that there was a new Superwoman title, I was mildly curious. I've always wanted to see a proper Superwoman title, but without endless references to or appearances by Clark. I didn't get the former (I should've known better), but I did get the latter, and that was good enough for me.

I've never liked Superman, though I always have liked other members of the Super Family (Supergirl, Superboy). I really was intrigued about the possibility of Lana Lang, someone I know very little about, and Lois teaming up. We get not only one Superwoman in this, but TWO. TWO. Two women working together to fight crime. I was sold.

While this wasn't great, it wasn't horrible, either. I do feel like WAY too much happened here. It's just the first comic, and already we have a huge cliffhanger at the end, a rushed origin story, and a ton of action that I think would've been better served to have been spread out over several issues, rather than just crammed into the first one. But I guess they really weren't sure how people would react.

I liked it. It's cool to see Lois as Superwoman, rather than as Clark Kent's dull as dishwater love interest. Will I keep reading? Maybe. This didn't grab my interest enough to leave me actively wanting more, but I'll probably check it out between other things I'm reading.

3.5/5.

It's awesome having another female-led superhero comic. And the art from Jimenez is beautiful.

That said, the biggest issue with this right now is its tie-in to the Superman universe. It seems like every single page there was an editor's note saying "read Action Comics" or "read this Superman story"--why can't Superwoman just stand on her own?

Even so, it was still a fun read and I look forward to following Lois Lane and Lana Lang as Superwomen (despite the ending, which seemed rushed). Hopefully this actually does become their own comic, and not one relying on a million others. I also wish this issue was a Rebirth issue where they'd spend more time introducing the characters, but oh well. We'll see how it goes.

I'm very iffy on this one. The ending was very strange but... the beginning was really cool. I think the second Superwoman is what through me off. I may not continue with this for long.

Edit (9/15/16): I have to cut back on my comics so I'm dropping this title. I may pick up the trade if I hear good things about the run eventually, but I'm not sure.

Slightly messy for my tastes and clearly I should have action comics 961 prior to this one. The story is okay but the panel work is messy, that ending was brilliant though. Not that interested for the next issue but I'm sure I'll check it out.

This was alright. It was probably the wordiest comic in my pile this week and while the premise was touching, a lot of the dialogue between characters felt jilted and unnatural. Lex Luthor continues his trend in the Rebirth titles, in behaving more as a plot device than a character.

A good solid book. Was surprised at the twist in the middle. Then astounded at the twist at the end. While I assume that nothing is permanent I did not expect anything like that to happen in issue 1.

5.0 - It’s not a Rebirth one-shot, but it should have been. It’s a phenomenal issue full of action, explanation, and heart that will definitely leave you surprised – plus, full of stunning pencils from writer/artist Phil Jimenez.

Well. This was...interesting. Cards on the table, I’ve never been a big fan of Lois Lane. She won me over in Smallville (yeah, the TV show), despite myself, because Erica Durance has a smile like a 200-watt light bulb (and the Whitesnake obsession, omg I was done for!), but most other interpretations I can live without, and some I downright despise (I’m sorry, Amy Adams! I love you but I hate your Lois!). Anyway, I found myself instantly kinda digging this Lois, maybe because I’d already seen her being pretty kickass in Superman: The Final Days of Superman, maybe because it was just so inspiring to see the shield and costume in action, and, well, she's being all heroic and I'm into it!

Check out those hero poses, folks! She learned from the best!

And then Lana shows up and they have this funny, semi-antagonistic banter, and I really like that whole flavour. Well, except there's a reference to Lois having outed Clark as Superman against his wishes. I didn't know about that plotline, and I'm giving you some intense side-eye, Ms. Lane. I think I'll definitely have to go back and read some New 52 Superman at some point, because it sounds like it was hella drama, and I am signed up for that.

There are a couple of sour notes when it comes to this "hey everyone, I'm writing about LADIES here!" vibe. Like, yeah, okay, let's make jokes about how much mascara/false eyelashes (???) they wear, and have Lex be wicked creepy flirtatious. Uhhh...I'll pass on that part.

Haha, get it?! Women are catty and fight about who's wearing more makeup!

No. Ew. Gross!

Lex is revealing some grand plan of his to protect Metropolis with a massive warship, but it's attacked, of course, and Lex's suit loses power, of course, so Lois has to swoop on in to help save the day. Only, it's too much for her, so she pushes Lana into finally taking action as ALSO SUPERWOMAN! Whahahahaaaaat?! So, when Clark exploded after taking out Plot Device (you remember him, right?), apparently the radiation blasted both Lois and Lana, giving them both different aspects of his powers.

Well shut my mouth!

In a series of flashbacks, we're told that Lana's had some anxiety about all of this, and that Clark did, too, when he was younger (oh, my tender little heart).

But don't forget that women are still always catty about makeup... (fuck, my eyes just rolled outta my head again, one sec...)

Lana's petrified about being abandoned by everyone she loves and she makes Lois promise to never leave her, which is about as subtle as a brick to the face, because, of course, Lois gets killed. Fuck me. I was just starting to really like you!!!

Gee, I wonder what's going to happen!

Anyway, despite some quibbles, this is an interesting direction to take, and I'm curious where Lana will go, from here. Unfortunately, this title doesn't show up again in my reading list for like...300 issues of other titles (omg I am going to be trying to catch up for the next 8 years), so...hang in there for a while, Lang!
