Rapid determination of paraquat in drinking water by ultra performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry

Abstract: Objective A rapid ultra- performance liquid chromatography- tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method was developed for the determination of paraquat in drinking water. Methods Samples were firstly dechlorinated with sodium hyposulfite and then the p H of the samples were adjusted to 7. 2 with 400 mmol / L ammonium phosphate. The analytes were extracted by WCX solid phase extraction columns,and eluted with ammonium phosphate( p H7. 2) and methanol successively,and concentrated with formic acid- acetonitrile( 1: 9,V / V). After separated on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH HILIC column using mobile phase of ammonium formate- acetonitrile,the analytes were detected with mass spectrometer in MRM mode. Results When the concentration of paraquat was withiin 50 ng / L ~ 2 000 ng / L,the linear relationship was good with correlation coefficient( r) >0. 99 and the detection limit of 50 ng / L( S / N = 3). Under 100 ng / L and 500 ng / L of two standard addition levels,the recoveries for the paraquat ranged from 89. 6% to 112. 3% with the relative standard deviation( RSD) of 7. 6 %- 12. 1 %( n = 7).Paraquat in drinking water from 100 field samples were analyzed by this method. The results indicated that paraquat were existed in three well water samples with the concentration of 140. 9 ng / L,79. 7 ng / L and 92. 0 ng / L,respectively. Conclusion This method is simple,sensitive and accurate. It is suitable for the detection of paraquat in drinking water.
