Tumblr Scholarship: Haimson et al, "Tumblr Was a Trans Technology: The Meaning, Importance, History and Future of Trans Technologies," Feminist Media Studies, 2019/21 ›

This Open Access journal article has become one of the most cited and most influential articles about Tumblr. From earliest scholarship, Tumblr was recognized as an important site for trans and nonbinary users in terms of both identity and community formation/curation. Quinn Miller and Marty Fink’s article “Trans Media Moments” (2014) was among the first and most influential, followed by the wok of scholars including Avery Dame (also an author here), Moya Bailey, Abigail Oakley, Andre Calvacante, Kai Jacobsen, and the scholars of the Scrolling Beyond Binaries Project. This article’s significance comes from the authors’ claim of Tumblr as a trans technology in the structural and economic sense as well, demonstrating how those aspects facilitated trans community and identity development through the porn ban of 2018. Here, the authors offer a concept of Tumblr as a structurally queer space along the lines first discussed by Fink and Miller as Alexander Cho in his chapter “Queer Reverb.”

“Hey, I’m Having These Experiences”: Tumblr Use and Young People’s Queer (Dis)connections | Byron | International Journal of Communication ›

This Open Access article is one product of the Scrolling Beyond Binaries project, “Exploring Social Media Use Amongst Young LGBTQIA+ Australians,” which was begun in 2016 by a community of scholars in Australia headed by Brady Robards, Paul Byron, Son Vivienne, Brendan Churchill and Benjamin Hanckel. This multi-year project is one of the first to demonstrate tumblr’s vital importance as a social media platform for LGBTQ users and its scholars have produced several articles and book chapters from project date, which have been added to the Scholarly Bibliography on this site.

tumblr

by Katrin Tiidenberg, Natalie Ann Hendry & Crystal Abidin

Katrin Tiidenberg, Natalie Ann Hendry, and Crystal Abidin offer the first systematic guide to tumblr and its crucial role in shaping internet culture. Drawing on a decade of qualitative data, they trace the prominent social media practices of creativity, curation, and community-making, and reveal tumblr’s cultlike appeal and position in the social media ecosystem.

“Sharp, perceptive, and empirically solid, this book is nothing short of a scholarly eulogy to the platform and community that tumblr used to be.”Jenny Sundén, Karlstad University

“So much more than just an overview of tumblr, this book is a generous examination of an all too rare form of online sociality – and a platform designed to help it thrive. It is also a sharp reminder that, though platforms can protect their communities, they can just as easily cut them off at the knees.” Tarleton Gillespie, Microsoft Research

This is a fantastic book that everyone interested in an overview of Tumblr, from its head to its (many) toes will want to own. Whereas a tumblr book (edited by us) was a collection of many voices, this book is by three scholar experts on tumblr (Katrin Tiidenberg, Crystal Abidin and Natalie Hendry) who have together written an analysis of the platform as a whole that is FANTASTIC. It is already being cited and used by scholars and students everywhere. Check it out!

not to be earnest and sincere but using this site really is starting to feel like a genuinely unique and enjoyable experience compared to most other social media apps and how they operate now. and i think all of the cringe i used to feel at still being on tumblr after all these years is turning into unabashed fondness for the people and the environment on here
