Mark Zuckerberg Is Heading to Italy After Its Deadly Earthquake

<p>Only days after the devastating earthquake that hit central Italy, Mark Zuckerberg announced Wednesday that he is traveling to Rome to speak with Facebook users there.</p><div class="paywall-selector"></div><div class="paywall">
<p>The Facebook exec plans on holding a live question and answer session in Rome on Monday, and encouraged users to leave any questions they may have in the comments section of his <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2016/08/24/technology/mark-zuckerberg-italy/index.html?iid=hp-stack-dom">post</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s unclear if Zuckerberg plans on visiting any of the towns affected by the earthquake that has left <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/25/europe/italy-earthquake/">252 people</a> dead so far, but did say he is, &#8220;looking forward to spending time with our Italian community after last night&#8217;s earthquake in central Italy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Rome is a special city to him, Zuckerberg wrote, so much so that he and his wife Dr. Priscilla Chan honeymooned there.</p>
<p class="p1">Shortly after the <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/23/europe/italy-earthquake/index.html">6.2 magnitude</a> earthquake hit, Facebook <a href="https://fortune.com/2016/08/24/facebook-safety-check-italy-earthquake/?iid=sr-link2">activated its “Safety Check” feature</a> late Tuesday evening.</p>

<p class="p1">Launched in 2014, the feature allows users in areas affected by a catastrophic event—whether it be natural or otherwise—to check in as &#8220;safe.&#8221;</p>
<p class="p1">Just in the past year, Facebook has activated the feature following the attacks in <a href="https://fortune.com/2015/11/16/facebook-safety-check/">Paris</a> and <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-22/facebook-activates-safety-check-amid-brussels-attack-crisis">Brussels</a>, and again after a bomb explosion <a href="https://fortune.com/2015/11/18/facebook-safety-check-activated/">in Nigeria</a>. The featured was activated for the first time in the U.S. in June following the mass shootings at an <a href="https://fortune.com/2016/06/12/facebook-orlando-safety-check/">Orlando nightclub</a>.</p>
<p class="p1">&#8220;I know it&#8217;s a difficult time for people who have lost homes or loved ones, and my thoughts are with everyone who was affected by the disaster,&#8221; he wrote.</p></div>
