The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held a hearing on the reasons for improper Social Security payments to deceased individuals as a result of inaccurate data maintained by the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) “Death Master File.” This computer database file was made available to the public in 1980 and contains more than 85 million records of deaths reported to the SSA since 1936. They also addressed the issue of people being incorrectly listed as deceased. close
