Most Freeways Reopen; More Heavy Rain Possible: UPDATE

Most of the freeways have reopened after rush-hour closures snarled the morning commute.

Updated: METRO DETROIT, MI — Flooded freeways are slowly reopening after rush hour closures during the morning commute, but a fresh round of thunderstorms could produce heavy rain through mid-afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is in the forecast daily through Wednesday, and heat is returning. Temperatures in the upper 80s are expected by Friday.

Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low round 66, northwest wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.

Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 9 a.m., then mostly sunny with a high around 85, light southwest wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning; a 30 percent of thunderstorms overnight, with a low around 69, west-southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny,with a high near 85, west wind 5 to 7 mph; partly cloudy overnight with a low around 70.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high around 86; a chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight with a low around 71.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, partly sunny with a high near 86; overnight showers and thunderstorms possible, with a low near 67.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, partly sunny with a high near 80; showers and thunderstorms possible overnight with a low around 62.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 77.

Our earlier report: Portions of some Metro Detroit freeways are impassable due to flooding from heavy rains, the Michigan Department of Transportation said on its Metro Detroit Twitter account.

Some of the affected highways are listed below. Van Buren Township officials also asked motorists to avoid Belleville Road between Van Born and Yost due to flooding under the railroad overpass.

Here are the routes affected by flooding

  • The Lodge Freeway is closed at the Jefferson/Cobo tunnel
  • A crash has closed all but the right lane of the I-96 express lanes east of the Southfield Freeway
  • Northbound I-75 is closed in Detroit at the Lodge
  • Eastbound I-94 is closed at I-696
  • Northbound Southfield Freeway is closed at Michigan Avenue
  • Only one lane is open on eastbound I-94 near 9 Mile Road
  • Eastbound I-696 is closed at Groesbeck
  • The northbound Lodge Freeway is closed at Jefferson
  • Northbound I-75 is closed at Fort/Schaefer for crash cleanup
