Rebel forces emboldened by their symbolic triumph in breaking the month-long siege of Aleppo announced yesterday that they planned to advance north through the city, sending food prices rocketing in regime-held areas that could now find themselves cut off.

Two dozen rebel groups, part of an alliance spearheaded by the rebranded Nusra Front after its public break with al-Qaeda, crashed through Assad’s lines on Saturday, reuniting two sides of rebel-held Aleppo.

The retaking of the Ramouseh district was a rare victory for the opposition that opened a vital supply road from the southwest of the city to the east and allowed the first fruit and vegetable deliveries to arrive in eastern Aleppo since it was isolated on July 17.
