Erdogan Says West Supports Terrorism

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey accused the West of supporting terrorism while criticizing his actions after an attempted coup against him last month.

Ankara - 2 August 2016 // SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President: “In the past, you let the terrorist organisation PKK’s leaders speak through video-conference in Germany. Now I ask you: does the West here support terrorism or not? Does the West take sides with democracy or coups or terrorism? Unfortunately, the West is supporting terrorism and taking sides with coups.” // SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President: +++ STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT++ “The implementation of a state of emergency in our country is totally suitable with European Union procedures. We now, as you know, have declared a 3-month state of emergency. Immediately some people out of the country said: ‘How come? We support you against the coup, but we are worried about the developments. (Is it right) to arrest or lay off so many people etc’. I advise you to look at the East-West Germany period.” // SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President: “You asked us for so many terrorists (to be) returned. We did not request documents for terrorists that you wanted returned. We said ‘if the US wants this terrorist from us, and if this person is jailed in our prisons, let him be sent back’.”
