Oklahoma residents can shop tax-free this weekend during the state’s annual sales tax holiday.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ending at midnight Sunday, shoppers can purchase a number of items without paying sales tax, according to the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Certain clothing and shoe purchases will be exempt from sales tax during this period. Qualified items will be exempt from state, city, county and local municipality sales tax.

According to the OTC, state legislature passed Senate Bill 861 in 2007 which provides sales tax exempt shopping, benefiting both consumers and retailers alike. Businesses will be supported by providing a boost in the economy, while consumers can save money while shopping for clothing and shoes, just in time for the upcoming school year.

Items exempt from sales tax over the weekend include aprons, athletic supporters, receiving blankets, bathing suits and caps, beach capes and coats, belts and suspenders, boots, coats and jackets, costumes, children and adult diapers, ear muffs, footlets, formal wear, garters and garter belts, girdles, gloves and mittens, hats and caps, hosiery, shoe insoles, lab coats, neckties, overshoes, rainwear, rubbers pants, scarves, shoes and shoelaces, slippers, socks and stockings, steel-toed shoes, underwear, uniforms and wedding apparel.

Retailers are required to participate in the event and may not collect state and local sales tax on the above items that are sold for less than $100 over the weekend.
